INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
• This question paper consists of SIX QUESTIONS
• Answer ALL QUESTIONS
• In your ANSWER SCRIPT PLEASE show all calculations leading to the answer
• State all assumptions and comment as much as possible on the implications of
the answers obtained.
• You are encouraged to present your answers neatly in the answer scripts.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SCAN AND SUBMIT YOUR ANSWER SCRIPT
ON BLACKBOARD DURING THE TIME PERIOD GIVEN. FAILURE TO
SUBMIT YOUR ANSWER SCRIPT IN THE GIVEN TIME PERIOD MEANS
YOUR ANSWER SCRIPT WILL NOT BE MARKED AND YOU WILL BE
GIVEN A FAILURE MARK.

Question 1.
The switch in the circuit in Figure 1 has been closed for a long time. It is opened at t =
0.
(a) Find the initial value of the inductor current i0 just before the switch is opened. (8
pts)
(b) Find the inductor current i(t) for t > 0. (7 pts)
Figure 1
Solution:
a) t<0
Perform source transformation on the left and replace inductor with short and 16Ω
resistor falls away
10−v v v
= +
2 12 4
10v= 60
V=6V then io= 6/4= 1.5A
Ϯ= L/R= 4/8 = ½
Question 2.
The switch in the circuit in Figure 2 has been closed for a long time. It is opened at t =
0.
a) Find the initial value of the capacitor voltage v(0+) just before the switch is opened.
(5 pts)
(b) Find the capacitor voltage v (t) for t > 0. (10 pts)
Figure 2
Solution:
a)
Ϯ =RC= 40(0.1) = 4s
Therefore v(t) = 40𝑒 −0.25𝑡 V
Question 3.
Figure 3
Solution:
Assumptions: v- =v+
I-=i+=0
Node v1-:
V1 V0−V1

1k 3k
V1=V0/4 …(1)
Node V1+
0.2−v1 v1−Vo v1
= +
1k 6k 2k
Substitute 1 into 2
1.2 = 10(Vo/4)-Vo
4.8 = 6Vo
Vo = 0.8V
