Journalism Part 2
What is Journalism?
journalism means writing for newspapers or magazines. It is the
communication of information through writing in periodicals and
newspapers. People have an inborn desire to know what’s novel or new.
This curiosity is satisfied by the journalists through their writing in the
newspapers and journals on current affairs and news.
Though there are various purposes for it, the most important aspect is the
freedom of expression. The root of journalism comes from people’s right
to have an opinion.
Therefore its primary purpose is to make sure all citizens are aware of
their rights. Journalism is a difficult profession. “To write weekly”, says
Virginia Woolf, “to write daily, to write shortly, to write for busy people
catching trains in the morning, or for tired people coming home in the
evening is a heartbreaking task for men who know good writing from bad.
Oscar Wilde once stated, “By giving us the opinion of the uneducated,
journalism keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community”.
1. It can be targeted
Printed media can be tailored to your target market, both in terms of the
style of design as well as in how you distribute the material. This means
you can focus your marketing budget on reaching the audience you want
and making the material relevant and appealing to them.
Printed materials can also create engagement between the customer and
the brand. By providing interesting articles to read, special offers, or
amusing copy there is the opportunity to provide a connection between
the reader and the product that can lead to brand awareness and sales.
4. It can be kept
Unlike webpages, print media has a longer lifespan. Rather than spending
a few seconds on a site and then moving on, brochures and leaflets can
be picked up and put down, and referred back to. They can also be
passed on to friends or colleagues, maximizing the reach of your
campaign.
Finally, print media offers the chance to link paper with online content.
Examples here include the use of a QR code or referral to a website for
more information or to make an online order.
The role of media also deserves appreciation for covering the natural
disasters which have taken place in the country. When the disastrous
earthquake hit the northern areas of the country in 2005, the Pakistani
media did an amazing job by providing top coverage of the entire event
and appealing to the people for help. They aired advertisement-free
television programs for hours in which they called various artists and
celebrities from all over the country who appealed to the entire nation for
contribution of funds. The same was the case when floods hit Pakistan in
2010. Many of the anchors along with their team visited the flood-affected
areas and highlighted the miserable condition of the people over there.
What governs Pakistan’s electronic media is a regulatory board name
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). This regulatory
board has been a mere dummy in the country as it has very rarely put a
stop to the negative role of media. It only performs the task of giving out
licenses to various channels so that they can be aired on television.
The impact of a country’s media could create calls for greater
responsibility by newspaper and television owners. There are times when
they should put their interests at the back of their mind and show or write
things that could be beneficial for the country.
