The gradient function for a curve is f l] xg = 6x2 - 4x + 5.

The curve passes through the point (1,3).

Find the equation of the curve.

QUESTION FIVE Assessor’s

use only

The equation of part of a roller coaster track is y = 0.4x3 + 0.4x2 - 4.8x,

where y is the height of the track in metres at a horizontal distance of
x metres from a fixed point on the track.
The instantaneous path of a roller coaster car at any point on the track is the
tangent to the track at that point.

Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = 0.4x3 + 0.4x2 - 4.8x when x = 3.

QUESTION SIX

The distance of a canoe from the shore is given by

s = 36t - 0.1t2
where s is the distance in metres and t is the time in minutes since the canoe left the shore.
Calculate the maximum distance of the canoe from the shore.

QUESTION SEVEN Assessor’s

use only

Calculate the area between the graph y = x2 + x - 6

= (x + 3) (x - 2)
and the x-axis for 0 # x # 4.

QUESTION EIGHT

An object is moving in a straight line through a fixed point A.

When the object first passes through A it is travelling at 5 cm per sec and the timing begins.
The acceleration of the object is given by
a = 6t - 16
where acceleration a is in cm per sec2 at a time t seconds after the object first passes through A.

Find the distance of the object from A the second time it comes to rest.
