True Love

1) True love is a decision, not a feeling. God demonstrated his love for us by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners. We show our love for God by obeying his commands. 2) True love is giving, not getting. The greatest act of love was God giving his only Son for our salvation. 3) True love is sacrificing, not self-seeking. We should be willing to lay down our lives for others, just as Jesus laid down his life for us, even if they may not deserve it. We can love others through practical acts of service.

True Love
Warm Upp

1. Who of your family or friends would you say is the most loving? Recall an instance explaining
this.
2. How do you express your love to someone? (e.g. you tell them how you feel, you give them
gifts, you serve them, etc.)

Wordd

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God;
11
but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

I John 4:11,1

30“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all
your strength.’ 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment
greater than these. . . . 33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your
strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Mark 12:30,31,3

We can love others when we understand and realize how much God loves us. God’s love
defines who we are and brings security in our lives, and it helps us love others—no matter how difficult
other people may be. In this lesson, we will look at three characteristics of true love

1. LOVE IS A DECISION, NOT A FEELING

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome . . .

1 John 5:3

Why should our love not be based on feelings or emotions? How did God show His love for us?
How can we show God that we love Him? (See 1 John 5:3.)

2. LOVE IS GIVING, NOT GETTING.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.”
FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

John 3:16

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

John 15:12

The greatest act of love is what the Father did: He gave His only Son for us. How has knowing
this changed the way you understand love?

3. LOVE IS SACRIFICING, NOT SELF-SEEKING.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our
lives for our brothers.

1 John 3:16

Just as we do not deserve God’s love, we are called to love others who may not deserve it as
well. How can we love our neighbors in practical ways?

(See also Luke 6:27-31.)

Personal Applicationn

1. Do you believe God loves you? Do you ever doubt God’s love for you? How do you know He
loves you?
2. Do you love God? Do you love others as God loved you and as you love yourself? How can you
better express your love to God and others this week?
3. Do you have a difficult time saying “I love you” to your family or loved ones? Why or why not?
