install, and configu re you r DVEOUS d igital vid eo effects system. For
op erations information, please see the DVEOUS Op erations Manu al -
P/ N 9100-0238.
Ma nua l Conventions
In this manu al, all Control Panel keys are called buttons to avoid
confu sion with the vid eo keying process.
Keycap labels app ear in bold capital letters: the 3D TRAN S button, the
RUN → button. Menu nam es are cap italized : the Warp menu, the Inp ut
m enu . Softkey labels are in bold up p er and low er case italicized letters:
the Rot a te softkey. Softknob labels ap p ear in bold u p per and lower case
letters: the H Pos softknob. Otherw ise, softknobs ap pear as softknob A,
softknob B, softknob C, and softknob D, starting on the left w ith softknob
A.
A sequence of bu tton presses ap p ears w ith long d ashes (—) sep arating
the bu ttons: M O D IFY — ALL — ENTER. H old ing one bu tton d ow n and
p ressing another ap p ears w ith a p lus (+). For exam ple, hold ing CLEAR
and p ressing the 3D TRANS bu tton ap p ears as CLEAR + 3D TRANS.
Dep end ing on your inp u t and channel configu rations, a channel can
process a vid eo signal, a key signal, or a d rop shad ow d erived from a
key signal. This manu al u ses the word image generically to ind icate the
channel’s outp ut (vid eo, key, or shad ow).
Op tions
An op tional second DVE board ad d s a second pair of tw in channels
to expand DVEOUS to a full tw o-channel (each channel has both
vid eo and key) or a fou r-channel (vid eo only) system .
DVEOUS sup p orts u p to 12 inp uts (six d u al-inp ut m od ules). You can
ad d inp u t m od ules in any com bination to suit your app lication:
Dual Serial Digital – tw o id entical 10-bit inpu ts; either can be
vid eo or key.
Dual Parallel Digital – tw o id entical 10-bit inpu ts; either can
be vid eo or key.
Dual Com ponent Analog – two id entical 8-bit resolu tion
inp u ts; either can be vid eo or key. Both are software selectable
for SMPTE, Betacam ® (525 or 625, setu p or no setup ), MII®,
RGB (setu p or no setu p), or key (setu p or no setu p). Sync m ust
be present on Y or G on the A inp u t source; the B inp ut can
lock to the A inpu t if sync is not present on the B inp ut sou rce
(su ch as a key sou rce withou t sync).
Com ponent Analog Vid eo Plu s Key – one each vid eo and key
in p u t at 10-bit resolu tion. Th e vid eo inp u t is softw are
selectable for SMPTE, Betacam (525 or 625, setu p or no setu p),
MII, or RGB (setu p or no setup ). The key inp u t is selectable
for setu p or no setup . This inp ut has an external sync inpu t,
Control Ports
There are several control p orts on the rear of the DVEOUS Main Chassis.
The Au x and Ed itor ports are used to sup p ort various protocols. They
have id entical p rotocol selections. The Ed itor p ort is u su ally u sed for
serial rem ote control of DVEOUS as a slave d evice u sing the SMPTE
or Sony RS-422 protocols. The Aux p ort is typ ically u sed for auxiliary
bu s control of several sw itcher types.
The LINC™ (Locally Integrated Nod e Control) p ort provid es timeline
control of DVEOUS from any Abekas d igital vid eo switcher.
Tw o GPI (General Pu rpose Interface) ports sup p ly extensive inp ut
and ou tp u t sw itch closure-based rem ote control. The GPI outp uts can
also p rovid e tally inform ation. Inp u t and Ou tp u t fu nctions are
assignable and trigger-ed ge m od e is selectable in the Rem ote Setu p
m enu . Pinou ts and specifications for the GPI p orts are p rovid ed in
Section 2. Configu ration is d iscu ssed in Section 6, Setu p Menus.
DVEOUS has the uniqu e ability to process either a key signal or a vid eo
signal on the second channel. This means that the stand ard DVEOUS
system can have one vid eo and one key path, or two vid eo p aths and no
key p ath; it can generate raster-shaped key signals at the ou tpu t.
In this manu al, "channel" can refer to a vid eo p ath or a key path, and ,
u nless sp ecifically noted , they are interchangeable. Each tw in channel
DVE board has a m ain vid eo channel (1A) and its "tw in" vid eo, key, or
shad ow channel (1B). Th e second (op tion al) DVE board ad d s an
ad d itional vid eo channel (2A) and tw in vid eo, key, or shad ow channel
(2B).
M u ltich an n el
"Mu ltich an n el system s" in th e p ast alw ays referred to th e vid eo
ch an n els, w ith th e accom p anyin g key chan nels im p lied . Thu s, a
four-channel system had four vid eo p aths and four key p aths. DVEOUS
is a mu ltichannel system in its stand ard configu ration, becau se both
channels can process vid eo.
V + K (Vid eo + Key)
The DVE board ind epend ently p rocesses one vid eo and one key sou rce.
All transform s are available to the key signal ind epend ently from the
vid eo. The key channel also has clip , gain, and horizontal p hase controls.
Menu Disp la y
The m enu screen is in the up p er left corner of the Control Panel. You can
ad just brightness and contrast in the Engineering Setu p m enu .
The top line show s the cu rrent m enu title, and ind icates the cu rrently

p aths, warps, light sources, and textu res. The DVE p rocessor internally
generates the key signals associated w ith these signals. Each channel’s
key signals are raster size "w hite" with ad ju stable op acity and ed ge
softness.
Vid eo+Key
In this m od e, you can manipu late the key signal with all keyfram e
p aram eters, inclu d ing m otion paths, w arp s, light sources, and textures,
ind epend ently of the vid eo. Note that, since you can m ove the key
channel com pletely ind ep end ently of the vid eo channel, p arts of the
vid eo channel that d o not overlap the key channel are not visible. For
this reason, select both channels when m oving the image in this mod e,
u nless this effect is w hat you want.
Vid eo-Key+Sha d ow
This m od e splits the B channel in tw o. The key p art moves with the m ain
vid eo channel (A), w ith a horizontal position control for the key signal.
You can manipu late the shad ow, w hich is d erived from the key inp ut,
w ith the B channel, com pletely ind epend ently of the vid eo/ key. All
keyfram e p aram eters, inclu d ing m otion paths, w arp s, light sources, and
textures, ap p ly to the shad ow channel.
You also have the op tion of using one DVE board to p rocess tw o vid eo
signals, and using the other DVE board to process one vid eo and one
key signal. Another configu ration is fou r channels of vid eo, each with
ind epend ent control. This lets you use DVEOUS as a four channel,
real-time vid eo image processor.
Sig na l Paths
Inp uts
DVEOUS sup p orts up to 12 vid eo and / or key inp u ts w ith a variety of
inp ut m od ules. The m od u les hand le tw o inp u ts each. Inp u t m od ule
typ es available are serial com ponent d igital, parallel comp onent d igital,
8-bit or 10-bit com p onent analog (inclu d ing RGB and m ost Y/ R-Y/ B-Y
formats), and 10-bit comp osite analog (both N TSC and PAL); all su pp ort
either vid eo or key signals. However, the tw o 10-bit analog inp ut
m od u les (com p onent and com p osite) su p port one d ed icated vid eo and
one d ed icated key inpu t. All analog formats are autom atically converted
to com p onent d igital for internal p rocessing.
DVE Paths
You can con figu re th e DVE ch an n els th ree w ays: Vid eo+Vid eo,
Vid eo+Key, an d Vid eo-Key+Sh ad ow . Th is d iscu ssion inclu d es a
d rawing for each m od e.
Vid eo+Vid eo M od e
In th e Vid eo+Vid eo m od e, the DVE board acts as tw o id entical
vid eo-only DVE channels, each processing a full 4:2:2 vid eo p ath. Each
channel has a vid eo inp ut and a textu re sou rce inpu t w ith d ed icated
freeze bu ffers. The texture inp uts feed each channel’s light sou rce m od el,
w here the textures are app lied to the light source calcu lations. The vid eo
inp uts feed the bord er/ crop processing, then p ass to their respective
light sou rce m od els. Then the light sou rce, inclu d ing texture, is ap plied
to each im age.
Each channel has its ow n ind ep end ent transform controller, w hich
generates ad d ressing for the m ain transform fram estore and filter
coefficients for the horizontal and vertical band w id th filters. The vid eo
for each channel is filtered and then p assed to the motion d etection and
vertical up sam pling circu itry. From here the vid eo is written into the
m ain transform fram estores.
The vid eo for each channel is read out of the transform fram estores, with
ad d resses generated by that channel’s transform controller, and sent to
the ou tp u t interpolators. The transform ed vid eo and generated key
in for m ation fr om each ch an n el p asses to th e com b in er, w h ich
com p osites the tw o channels together.
The com bining process u ses either a fixed key p riority (A over B or B
over A) or a Z (d epth) based key priority. In Z key mod e, the Z position
of each channel in 3D space d eterm ines its p riority relative to the other
channel.
The grap hics outp ut consists of axis grid s and channel id entifiers for
each channel.
Vid eo+Key M od e
The Vid eo+Key m od e d iffers from the Vid eo+Vid eo mod e only in that
the board processes the B channel as the key signal for the A channel,
w ith ad d itional key clip, gain, and horizontal p hase ad ju stm ents. N ote
that the chrom inance p rocessing of the B channel is not u sed in this mod e
since key signals have lu m inance information only. This makes the A
channel 4:2:2 and the B channel 4:0:0.
The A/ B Com biner’s key outp ut is effectively that of the B channel, and
not the raster-based signal seen in the Vid eo+Vid eo m od e. Since the key
(B) transform can be ind ep end ent of the vid eo (A) transform, it is
p ossible to p osition the transformed key so that the transform ed vid eo
is not visible, or only partially visible, in the final comp osited ou tp u t.

Outp uts
Each DVE board su p plies three signals to the Com biner board : vid eo,
key, and grap hics. The vid eo signal is either a transform ed version of
the A inp u t (Vid eo+Key or Vid eo-Key+Shad ow m od es) or of the
com bined A and B inp u ts (Vid eo/ Vid eo m od e). The key signal is either
a transform ed version of the B inp u t (Vid eo+Key or Vid eo-Key+Shad ow
m od es) or an internally generated raster-shaped ed ge key (Vid eo+Vid eo
m od e). The graphics signal has a channel id entifier and up to three axis
cu rsors per channel, w hich are visu al clu es used for creating complex
objects or movem ent.
The vid eo and key signals connect to both the DVE Com biner and the
Target Fram estore keyers. The DVE Com biner com bines the two DVE
board s’ com bined vid eo and key signals into a single com posite of the
four channels. This com bined ou tp u t is then keyed over the op tional
Target Fram estore (TFS) and the background .
The Target Framestore op tion lets you create trail, sparkle, and sm ear
effects, as w ell as com p osite d rop-ins. You can select the 1A/ 1B DVE
ou tput, the 2A/ 2B DVE outp ut, or the combined four channel DVE
ou tpu t as the inpu t source for the Target Fram estore. Also, since the TFS
stores key and Z (d epth) inform ation, it has its ow n Z key p riority, and
can be p laced "over" or "u nd er" the live DVE channels.
If tw o DVE board s are installed , the d irect unshaped vid eo and key
ou tpu ts of each DVE board are also available as an op tion. These
Channel Ou tpu t m od u les are installed in the inpu t 9/ 10 and 11/ 12 slots
in the chassis, and lim it the nu mber of available inpu ts to eight. Each
m od u le p rovid es serial d igital vid eo and key outp uts: one for the
com bined 1A/ 1B channels, and one for the com bined 2A/ 2B channels.
The vid eo ou tpu ts are u nshaped and u nkeyed , and intend ed for use as
key and fill inpu ts to a sw itcher or external keyer.
DVEOUS’ m ain vid eo ou tpu t sup p lies two id entical serial com ponent
d igital vid eo and key ou tpu ts. The stand ard com p onent ou tpu t m od ule
also su p plies one com p onent analog vid eo and key ou tp u t with sep arate
sync. An op tional comp osite outp ut m od u le su p plies tw o com p osite
analog vid eo and one analog key ou tpu t besid es the serial com ponent
d igital ou tpu ts.

Overview
DVEOUS is a h igh ly flexible an d p ow erfu l d igital vid eo effects
processor, equ ally capable of being u sed d irectly on-air, live-to-tape, or
in a post p rod u ction environm ent. Its internal p rocessing is com pletely
com p onent d igital, bu t inp u t/ outp ut op tions let you integrate it into a
w id e range of vid eo system configu rations, from com posite analog to
com p onent d igital.
Timing Considerations
There are five types of available inp ut m od u les, w hich m eans DVEOUS
can su pp ort m ost com m on vid eo form ats. All inp ut m od ules featu re
au tom atic inpu t vid eo timing, from u nd er one line ad vanced to ju st
u nd er two lines d elayed w ith respect to reference, giving a "w ind ow" of
a little less than three TV lines. Also, the outp ut tim ing range available
w ith either outp ut mod u le is large, about 18.8 microsecond s ad vanced
to 18.8 microsecond s d elayed from reference—m ore than one half of a
TV line. The com bination of autom atic inpu t tim ing and large outp ut
tim ing range, m ake DVEOUS easy to integrate into m ost vid eo systems.
The op tional comp osite ou tpu t m od ule provid es tw o com posite analog
p rogram ou tp u ts and tw o analog key ou tp u ts, besid es the d igital
ou tp u ts. N ote th at, alth ou gh th e an alog ou tp u ts on m od u le are
com p osite, the serial d igital ou tp u ts are com p onent; there are no
com p osite d igital ou tp u ts (or inp u ts, for that matter) available for
DVEOUS. The analog ou tpu ts au tom atically select NTSC levels when
the u nit is set to the 525-line stand ard and is referenced to N TSC black
burst. They autom atically select PAL levels when the unit is set to the
625-line stand ard and is referenced to PAL color black.
One set of outp ut tim ing ad ju stm ents affects all ou tp u ts, regard less of
format, inclu d ing the op tional Channel Ou tpu ts. Since the timing of the
analog ou tpu ts is typically mu ch more critical than that of the d igital
ou tpu ts, you shou ld m ake all tim ing ad justments while observing the
analog ou tpu ts and their tim ing relative to the analog vid eo system .
H ow ever, the d igital outp uts "lead " the analog ou tp u ts in time by a few
m icrosecond s, becau se of the d elay caused by the d igital-to-analog
conversion process. Most mod ern d igital p rocessing d evices have a
certain am ou nt of au tomatic inpu t timing, so if you need to rou te both
sim u ltaneou sly to d ifferent d evices, there should not be a problem with
the tim ing d ifference betw een the d igital and analog ou tp u ts.
Tim ing DVEOUS’ ou tpu t into an analog system is sim ilar to tim ing any
other d evice. Rem ember, how ever, that there is a one fram e p rocessing
d elay from inp ut to ou tp u t, as in m ost m od ern DVEs. The Ou tpu t Setup
m enu has coarse and fine horizontal phase controls. Ad ju st them while
m onitoring the inpu t of the sw itcher or other d evice that requ ires that
its inp u ts be zero-tim ed to a set reference. Becau se of possible p ath length
d ifferences betw een the analog program and key ou tp u ts and their
respective d estinations, there are separate coarse and fine phase controls
for the analog key ou tpu t. These let you ad vance or d elay the ou tpu t key
tim ing by +/ - 30 p ixels (abou t +/ - 2.2 microsec) to coincid e with the
ou tpu t vid eo tim ing at its d estination. This key tim ing ad ju stm ent d oes
not affect the d igital key outp ut.
If you are feed ing sw itcher Aux Bus outp uts to DVEOUS, w hether or
not from an 8100/ 8150, u se this "roving" reference signal to lock
DVEOUS, instead of you r hou se reference. However, the switcher or
d estination d evice that DVEOUS feed s m ust be able to accom mod ate the
large tim ing sw ings that DVEOUS has w hen locked to a "roving"
reference. Otherw ise, DVEOUS w ill not be tim ed properly with other
sou rces in the system .
Note: Th e Com p osite Ou tp u t m od u le req u ires b lack b u rst
as its referen ce. Th e 8100/8150 Au x Ref ou tp u t con tain s
syn c on ly. If you h ave th e Com p osite O u tp u t m od u le, u se
a slaved com p osite syn c gen erator to feed th e DVEO US
in p u t.
The typ ical inp u t autotiming "wind ow ," w ithin which any sou rce fed to
that inp ut is autom atically correctly timed into DVEOUS, norm ally
ranges from ju st u nd er one line early to ju st und er tw o lines late, relative
to system reference. This means that, as long as the tim ing of a sou rce
relative to system reference falls insid e this range, DVEOUS can accept
and au tom atically tim e that sou rce for internal u se. H ow ever, the
Com posite Inpu t mod u le’s "w ind ow" normally ranges from just over
two lines early to ju st u nd er one line late, again relative to system
reference, because of the d ecod ing d elays m entioned earlier.
This "earlier" autotiming w ind ow associated w ith the Comp osite Inp ut
m od u le is not a p roblem w ith sou rces tim ed closely to system reference.
H ow ever, w hen DVEOUS’ inpu ts are fed by the Aux ou tp u ts of a
com posite d igital sw itcher, such as the Abekas A82 or GVG Mod el 3000,
p rocessing d elays throu gh the sw itcher may d elay the vid eo enou gh so
that DVEOUS Com posite inpu t mod u les cannot au totim e it p rop erly.
For this reason, DVEOUS has a Tim ing control that allow s you to d elay
the inp u t tim ing wind ow of all inp uts sim u ltaneou sly to comp ensate for
external d elays. (See Engineering Menu , Section 6.)
sync tim ing d oes not m atter, as long as they both fall into the au tomatic
tim ing "w ind ow " d escribed earlier; DVEOUS retimes them so that their
relative sync timing is zero. The same is true if both sou rces are analog
and both have sync; their horizontal sync p hase is retim ed to be
coincid ent.
Another p roblem arises if the fill and key signals both have sync, but
their relative horizontal active p ictu re p ositions d o not align. Ad ju sting
the signal’s horizontal tim ing d oes not fix this, becau se DVEOUS’ inp ut
locks to sync and retim es it regard less of its tim ing relative to reference.
The only way to fix this kind of problem is to m ove the horizontal vid eo
or key p osition relative to its ow n sync. As d escribed in the previous

The face-plate of the CPL m od u le d isp lays a series of red and green LEDs

Overview
DVEOUS lets you m ake alm ost all en gineerin g ad ju stm en ts an d
configu rations from the Control Panel. Since DVEOUS controls these
setu p s in softw are, you can save and recall them to and from flop py d isk.
This lets you quickly access mu ltip le engineering setu p s as need ed .
This section covers the menus used in tim ing and configuring DVEOUS
for your system , and using the flop py d isk d rive for saving and recalling
Setup m enu files. This involves the following m enu s:
The Inp u t Setu p m enu lets you set tim ing and signal setu p param eters
for the variou s inp ut mod u le typ es, and ad just the optional Channel
Ou tpu t mod u le(s).
The Ou tp u t Setu p m enu lets you set ou tp u t tim ing, horizontal
blanking typ e, ou tpu t bit rou nd ing, and analog ou tp u t form at and
levels for vid eo and key signals ind epend ently.
The Rem ote Setu p menu lets you change the ed itor tim ecod e offset
and configure GPIs.
The Engineering m enu lets you :
Select the ed ge processing (shaped or u nshaped ) for the
p rogram (m ain vid eo) outp uts
Bypass the internal background keyer (backgrou nd on/ off)
Com pensate for d elayed comp osite inp u ts
Set the m enu d isplay brightness, contrast, and screen saver
timeout
Perform software up d ates
The Rem ote Enable m enu lets you enable the Ed itor, Au x, and LIN C
Serial p orts, and select their serial rem ote p rotocol.
The Personality m enu lets you set Field Dom inance on Ru n. This
allow s you to d eterm ine the field you r effect will start on w hen
operating in a timing sensitive environm ent su ch as p ost prod u ction.
Use the Disk m enu for all flopp y d isk functions, includ ing naming,
saving, recalling, cop ying, and d eleting files; formatting d isks; and
setting the system clock.
Crop (A57) mod e blanks all inpu ts by the same am ou nt. It d oes this by
sim p ly cropp ing the ed ges to remove the offend ing blanking areas. In
ad d ition, all transform valu es are re-scaled so the 4:3 screen u nit
nu m bers p rop erly match the size of the crop ped im age. The advantage
of this method is that all im ages maintain their original asp ect ratios so
there is no visible d ifference betw een the original and the crop ped
image, allow ing match-framing betw een the two. A d isad vantage is that
the blanking com p ensation ap p lies equ ally to all external inp u ts.
Ind ivid u al inpu ts cannot be ad justed .
Tim ing
Press Tim in g to bring u p controls for ad ju sting the horizontal position
of the active picture and to select Syn c Slave statu s for a com ponent
analog inpu t mod u le.
H Phase
Use this softknob to ad ju st the horizontal phase of the active p ictu re
relative to sync. For a comp onent vid eo or key inp u t, the range is +/ - 1
p ixel (+/ - 74 nsec), ad justable in 2.3 nsec step s.
Sync Sla ve
Th e d u al com p on en t in p u t m od u le exp ects syn c on the Y or G
com p onents; however, if you have a signal w ithout sync, you can
connect it to the even nu mbered inp u t of the m od u le (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12).
You m ust then "slave" it to the od d nu m bered inp ut on the same m od ule
(1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11), w hich m u st be a signal w ith sync. This signal can be
a Y/ G com p onent, a key signal, or a com p osite sync signal. Tu rn Syn c
Slave O n for the even num bered inp ut if it has no sync. If it has sync,
leave Syn c Slave tu rned Off.
The com p onent analog plu s key inp u t mod u le also exp ects sync on the
Y or G components and the key signal. H ow ever, if you have a vid eo
signal w ith sep arate sync, you can connect the sep arate sync to the
d ed icated sync inp ut. Ju mp er JP2 on the mod u le selects sync on Y/ G
(short JP2 p ins 1-2) or sep arate sync (short JP2 pins 2-3). See Section 3 –
System Overview for m ore inform ation on jum p er settings for this
m od u le. This m od ule allow s either the vid eo inp u t or the key inp ut to
"sync slave." Vid eo can slave to key, or key can slave to vid eo. If external
sync is provid ed , Syn c Slave O n w ill lock to the sync inp ut.
Setup
Press Set up to bring u p controls for selecting the form at and ad ju sting
the inp ut’s levels.
Mod e
Use M od e to select the format of the com p onent analog inpu t. The table
on the follow ing p age d etails the inpu t levels expected by each setting.
H ere are som e general gu id elines for selecting form ats:
In 625-line systems, som e Betacam VTRs u se SMPTE/ EBU N 10 levels;
u se the SM PTE N 10 setting for VTRs that su pp ly these ou tp u t levels.
If you are using a 625-line Betacam VTR w ith the stand ard Betacam
levels, you shou ld u se the Beta 50 setting. Also, 625-line MII VTRs
outp ut correct SMPTE/ EBU N 10 levels, and you shou ld use the
SM PTE N 10 setting w ith these u nits also.
In all 525-line systems except Japan, Betacam ® VTRs ou tpu t stand ard
Betacam levels with setup ; u se the Beta 60 setting for these VTRs. In
Jap an only, Betacam VTRs ou tp u t no setu p and higher chrom inance
levels; u se the Beta 60 N S setting for these VTRs. You shou ld u se the
M II SU setting w ith 525-line MII VTRs that have setup . MII® VTRs
in Jap an shou ld u se the SM PTE N 10 setting, as they d o not have setu p .
The G BR SU setting is intend ed for use w ith 525-line N TSC-related
GBR (RGB) signals that are prod u ced by cameras or by d ecod ed NTSC
vid eo.
When selecting a key inpu t form at, u se the SM PTE Key setting in all
625-line system s and in all 525-line systems that use SMPTE levels as
shown in the table on this p age. Key SU is intend ed for 525-line
(NTSC-related ) key signals with setup . Key N SU is intend ed for
525-line (NTSC-related ) key signals with no setu p.
Y Ga in
Use Y G ain to ad ju st the overall level of the vid eo signal’s lu minance
com p onent, or the key signal’s overall level if it is a key inp u t. When
u sed w ith the SMPTE GBR format, this ad ju stm ent is d ow nstream of the
transcod ing circuitry, so there is no sep arate "green" gain control for
these form ats. GBR SU has sep arate Y gain and offset ad ju stm ents.
Y Offset
This softknob only app ears if a comp onent format with setup (Beta 60,
MII SU, GBR SU, or Key SU) is selected . Use Y O ffset to ad ju st the black
level of the vid eo signal’s lu m inance comp onent, or the key signal’s
black level if it is a key inp u t.

d ecod e processing u sed on the comp osite signal.
Y Ga in
Use Y G ain to ad ju st the overall level of the vid eo signal’s lu minance
com p onent. This ad ju stm ent is d ownstream of the d ecod ing circu itry,
so there is no "com posite" or overall vid eo gain control.
Y Offset
Use Y O ffset to ad ju st the black level of the vid eo signal’s lu minance
com p onent. This ad ju stm ent is d ownstream of the d ecod ing circu itry,
so there is no "com posite" or overall black level control.
Mod e
Use M od e to select a method for d ecod ing the composite vid eo inp ut
into its lum inance and chrom inance com ponents.
Notch – This selects a sim ple band p ass filter that red u ces or eliminates

d ecod ed .
Setup
Pressing this softkey, w hen the selected inp ut typ e is a com posite key,
accesses the Y G ain , Y O ffset, and M od e controls.
Y Ga in
Use Y Gain to ad ju st the inp ut key signal’s overall level.
Y Offset
Use Y Offset to ad ju st the inp ut key signal’s black level.
H Phase
Use this softknob to ad ju st the horizontal phase of the active p ictu re
relative to sync.
Mod e
Use M od e to select a typ e of key inpu t su p ported by this m od ule.
KEY+SY+BST – Key signal originates from a comp osite source, with
lu minance, sync, and color burst.
KEY+SYN C – Key signal originates from a comp osite or com ponent
sou rce, w ith lu minance and sync only.
KEY - SYNC – Key signal originates from a composite or com ponent
sou rce, w ith lum inance only and no sync. This slaves the inp ut sync
timing to the com panion com posite vid eo inp u t, and therefore m ust
alw ays have a signal p resent at the com posite vid eo inp u t.
Bits
This softkey only app ears if a p arallel d igital inp ut mod u le is installed
at the selected inp ut location. Press Bit s to bring u p the In p u t Bits
softknob, which lets you select the bit resolu tion for a serial or parallel
d igital inp ut. Typ ically, 10 Bits is the best setting to use. H ow ever, som e
8-bit com p on en t d igital equ ip m en t w ith d igital ou tp u ts w as not
d esigned to set the 9th and 10th bits (LSBs) to a level of 0. These LSB d ata
lines can float high, causing low level rand om noise in the fu ll 10-bit
signal. If need ed , you can select 8 Bits for the inp ut to eliminate rand om
noise from these floating LSBs.
Matte
This softkey only app ears if a serial d igital or parallel d igital inp ut
m od u le is installed at the selected inp ut location. Press Ma tt e to bring
u p controls for selecting external vid eo or the internal color matte
generator for the cu rrently selected inp u t, and to ad ju st the m atte’s color.
Only the serial d igital and parallel d igital inp u t m od ules have matte
color generators. If the inp ut location has an analog inpu t m od ule
installed , or no inp ut mod u le installed at all, the matte color generator
is not available for that inp u t.
Ma tte Ena b le
The d efault setting for this softknob is Off, w hich p asses the vid eo
connected to this inpu t to DVEOUS’ crossp oint matrix. If set to O n , it
d isables the selected inp u t’s vid eo and rep laces it with a color matte
generator.
Hue / Sa t / Lum
Use these softknobs to set the color for the m atte generator. The Hu e
softknob controls the tint, the Sat softknob controls the chrominance
saturation, and the Lu m softknob controls the brightness. N ote that it is
p ossible to create "illegal" colors that fall outsid e the RGB, N TSC,
and / or PAL color ranges if satu ration is set to 100%. However, colors
are correct if satu ration is set to 75%. It is a good id ea to use a w aveform
m onitor or vectorscope w hen creating a color m atte w ith this featu re.
Setup
Press Set up to bring u p controls for setting horizontal blanking, bit

Tim ing
DVEOUS can accomod ate signals from and to the com posite world with
the Com posite Inp ut mod u le and the Comp osite Outp ut m od ule. The
Com p osite Inpu t m od ule has the sam e am ou nt of inpu t autotiming
com p ensation as d o the other Inp ut m od ule types—ap p roxim ately 2.8
lines of au totim ing. H ow ever, d u e to the extra d elay incu rred in
d igitizing and d ecod ing com p osite analog signals, the au totim ing
"wind ow " of the Com posite Inp u t m od ule is significantly "earlier" in
tim e, relative to system reference, than the au totim ing w ind ow of the
other Inp ut m od u le typ es.
For this reason, DVEOUS has a Tim ing control that allow s you to d elay
the inp u t tim ing wind ow of all inp uts sim u ltaneou sly to comp ensate for
external d elays.
d elayed by at least 0.5 lines from system reference. The Delay setting is
therefore not recom m end ed for DVEOUS system s containing both
Com p osite Inpu t mod u les and other types of Inp u t m od ules.
The follow ing table ou tlines the inpu t tim ing w ind ow ranges for all
inp ut m od u les, for both the N orm al and Delay settings.
Inp ut Mod ule Timing setting Ap p ro xima te Retiming Wind ow Ra ng e
Composite Video Normal 2H advanced to 1H delayed from system ref.
Delay 0.5H advanced to 2.5H delayed from system ref.
N ote that all figu res in the above table are ap proximate because they
vary w ith the Outp ut Phase setting for the DVEOUS unit. If you ad vance
or d elay the DVEOUS ou tp u t horizontal p hase relative to system
reference, the inp u t tim ing w ind ow is ad vanced or d elayed by the sam e
am ou nt. Since the Ou tp u t Phase ad ju stm ent range is ap proximately p lus
or minus 19 m icrosecond s, you can vary the inp ut tim ing wind ow by
that am ou nt by ad ju sting Ou tpu t Phase, but only if the ou tp u t tim ing of
DVEOUS is not critical to the rest of the system .

This lets DVEOUS learn effect register recalls as p art of a sw itcher
E-MEM.
Au x Bu s – Allow s DVEOUS to control sw itcher Au x Bu s ou tp u ts. Use
this w hen feed ing DVEOUS’ inp u ts from sw itcher Au x Bus outp uts.
Instead of feed ing separate front and back sources to DVEOUS using
tw o Aux Bu s ou tpu ts (four if front and back key signals are inclu d ed ),
this type of control lets you p reset both the front and back sou rces on
one Au x Bu s ou tpu t. DVEOUS then send s a switch comm and to the
