WILLIS CARRIER: THE INVENTOR
OF MODERN AIR CONDITIONING
Last July 17th 1902, Willis Carrier invented the first modern air conditioning
system.
Carrier’s invention helped give rise to numerous industries that continue to
power our economy as of today.
It led directly to summer movie blockbusters as people flocked to cooled
theaters to escape the heat.
The invention has even enabled the development of indoor shopping malls,
transatlantic flight and the computers and servers that power the internet.
Today’s “modern” cooling systems still operate on the same basic principles,
providing comfortably chilled air to people inside. So, how do air conditioners
work?
PROCESS
1. The compressor raises the pressure and
temperature of the refrigerant gas
sending it to the condenser coil where it
is converted to a liquid.
2. The refrigerant travels back indoors and
enters the evaporator coil.
3. The liquid refrigerant evaporates, and
cools the indoor coil.
4. The fan blows indoor air across the cold
evaporator coil where the heat inside the
home is absorbed into the refrigerant.
5. The cooled air is then circulated
throughout the home while the heated
evaporated gas is sent back outside to
the compressor.
TYPES OF AIR
CONDITIONING SYSTEM
CENTRAL AIR
CONDTIONER
If you have a large home &
wish to cool multiple rooms
at once, then this type of air
conditioning is best suited
for you
DUCTLESS
MINI-SPLIT
If you want better
efficiency, or you want to
do away with a lot of
ducting, or you simply just
want a portion of your
home to be cooled, then
opting for ductless mini-
split air conditioners is a
great choice.
WINDOW AIR
CONDITIONER
Suitable if you’re looking to
cool a single room or a
small area.
PORTABLE AIR
CONDITIONER
Placed in a single unit with
all its components
enclosed inside, but the
difference is that it is a free-
standing unit and therefore
can be moved from room
to room.
FLOOR MOUNTED
AIR CONDITIONER
Designed for convenience
if you prefer a mini-split but
lack the required space for
a wall mounted unit.
SMART AIR
CONDITIONER
are a type of mini-split,
window, or portable air
conditioner that are IoT
enabled. These ACs are
connected to Wi-Fi and
come with a native app
providing global control
through a smartphone.
GEOTHERMAL AIR
CONDITIONER
It works by utilizing the
insulating properties of the
earth. Since the
temperatures under 4 to 6
feet of land remain
consistent all year
regardless of the weather,
geothermal technology
takes advantage of this to
heat & cool your home
more efficiently.
HYBRID / DUAL FUEL AIR
CONDITIONER
A hybrid system is one that
combines a gas furnace
with an electric air-source
heat pump to deliver a
cost-effective & efficient
performance in terms of
heating & cooling.
EVAPORATOR COOLER
Evaporative coolers are
sometimes categorized as
air conditioning
alternatives, even though
technically, they are not air
conditioners and differ in
both mechanism and
structure.

PARTS OF THE
AIRCONDITIONING
UNIT
Indoors(Cold Side of the System)
Warm indoor air is cooled as it blows across a cold cooling coil full of
refrigerant. Heat from indoor air is absorbed into the refrigerant as the
refrigerant turns from liquid to gas. The cooled air is distributed back to
the house.

Outdoors(Hot Side of the System)

The refrigerant gas is compressed before entering a large coil in the
outdoor unit. Heat is released outside as the refrigerant turns back to a
liquid and a large fan pulls outdoor air through the outdoor coil rejecting
the heat absorbed from the house.
INDOOR COMPONENTS
INDOORS(COLD SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Evaporator
The evaporator coil from your indoor unit will be connected
to the condenser coil in your outdoor air conditioning unit.
This component is the part of the air con system in which
the refrigerant absorbs heat.
INDOORS(COLD SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Filter
Air conditioning filter are an essential component in any air
conditioning system. They prevent dust and allergens from
circulating in the home and help to make the air you
breathe safer and cleaner. If you didn't have filters inside
your A/C system, the air quality inside your home would be
compromised.
INDOORS(COLD SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Ducts
The ducts inside your A/C system allow air to travel
through. The heated and cooled air can be pushed into or
pulled out of the room through separate ducts.
INDOORS(COLD SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Thermostat
In air conditioning systems, you'll have a thermostat,
enabling you to adjust the temperature of your system to
one that suits you and your needs.
OUTDOOR COMPONENTS
OUTDOORS(HOT SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Compressor
Air conditioning compressors change the state of the
refrigerant in your system to cool your home.
It compresses the refrigerant in gas form to increase its
pressure and temperature. As the gas travels to the inside
unit, the refrigerant changes back into a liquid by releasing
this pressure and condenses back into a liquid.
OUTDOORS(HOT SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Condenser coil
The job of the condenser coil is to cool down the gas in its
highly pressurized form. The gas sent from the air
conditioning compressor is then changed to a liquid again.
OUTDOORS(HOT SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Expansion valve
The air conditioning expansion valve has been designed to
remove pressure from the refrigerant that has been built
up by the compressor. It works alongside the compressor
and condenser to keep the cycle of gas and liquid going,
which will cool down your home as it does so.
OUTDOORS(HOT SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Fan
The fan can be found in the outdoor unit, and its main job
is to release the heat from your home from the condenser
coil. Inside the indoor unit, you'll have an air handling unit
which helps to push cool air around the home.
OUTDOORS(HOT SIDE
OF THE SYSTEM)
PARTS
Refrigerant
Air conditioning refrigerant passes through the entire
system as the different components do their jobs. It's a
cooling solution used in many refrigeration products and is
a crucial part of ensuring your rooms stay cool.
APPLICATIONS

S Y S T E M S
APPLICATION
Air conditioning (including filtration,
humidification, cooling and
disinfection) can be used to provide a
clean, safe, hypoallergenic
atmosphere in hospital operating
rooms and other environments where
proper atmosphere is critical to
patient safety and well-being.
DOMESTIC AIR
CONDITONING
Domestic Air conditioning is simply air conditioning for your home. AC is
becoming increasingly popular because the conventional methods of
cooling homes are no longer working due to climate change (summers
are much warmer now than it was before).

Modern air conditioning will provide useful reliefs from heat or cold. It’s
possible to use air conditioning systems throughout the year. The systems
can be switched into a heating mode when the temperature decreases or
vice versa. AC systems will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.

In a regular home (two-bedroom home), two properly placed AC units can

cover your entire home with air conditioning.
AUTOMOTIVE AIR
CONDITIONING
The air-conditioning system in a car works by manipulating refrigerant
between a liquid and a gaseous state. As the refrigerant changes states,
it absorbs heat and humidity from the vehicle and allows the system to
give off cool, dry air.

To change the refrigerant between a liquid and a gaseous state, the air-
conditioning system works to control pressure and temperature.
EVAPORATIVE AIR
COOLING
An evaporative cooler is an electrical device that cools the air
temperature of a space through the action of a natural refrigerant, in
this case, water.

Among its advantages are its portability, sustainability and ease of use,
making it an efficient alternative to cool your home.
Its system is very simple, it sucks the warm air from the room and
passes it through the tank, where cold water or ice has been previously
poured. This cools the air that has been sucked in and that comes out
again thanks to the fans.
COMMERICIAL AIR
CONDITIONING
Commercial air conditioning is the cooling and ventilation systems
installed in non-residential buildings or commercial establishments.
These systems are designed to meet the cooling and comfort needs of
large spaces like offices, retail stores, hospitals, hotels, restaurants,
shopping malls, and other commercial and industrial facilities.

The primary purpose of commercial air conditioning is to maintain a

comfortable and safe indoor environment for occupants, ensuring that
the temperature, humidity, and air quality are within acceptable
ranges. In addition to providing comfort, high-quality commercial AC
systems can contribute to energy efficiency and cost savings, noise
reduction, and improved
