    Time : 2½ Hours] [Maximum Marks : 75

    Before answering the question-paper candidates should ensure that they have been supplied
    to correct and complete question-paper. No complaint, in this regard, will be entertained
    after the examination.

    Note : Attempt Four questions in all. All questions carry equal marks.

    1. (a) Describe the objectives of gating system in casting.


    (b) Discuss the various types and need of a riser in casting. Explain the Cain’s
    methods of riser design.

    2. (a) Explain the various types of forging process. Also discuss the defects of
    forging process.
    (b) What do you mean by powder metallurgy ? Explain the process with suitable
    block diagram.

    3. (a) Describe the various characteristics required for a cutting tool material. Also
    discuss the criteria of selecting a cutting tool.
    (b) What do you mean by mechanics of chip formation ? Derive the relation for
    chip thickness ratio.

    5. What do you mean by Solid state of joining processes ? Explain friction stir
    welding process in detail. Also discuss the various welding defects.

    6. (a) Explain the need of non-conventional machining processes.


    (b) Explain the working principle of water jet machining with its advantage,
    disadvantages and applications.

    7. Explain the working principle and material removal rate in laser beam machining.
    Also discuss its advantages, disadvantages and applications.

    8. Write notes on the following :


    (i) Etchant and Maskant
    (ii) Electro chemical Machining process.
