What I Need to Know
In the previous module, you had a glimpse of how the respiratory and
circulatory systems work together for the body to function well. You will
continue your journey of understanding how you can keep them function well.
You will also find out how your environment and your daily activities and
routines affect your health. All over the news, you always hear updates and
information about COVID-19. A section of this module will help you check
your awareness and preparedness regarding this pandemic.
Learning Objectives:

What I Know
Direction: Answer the given items below. If you will get all items correct, you
may skip this module and proceed to module 4. However, if you
will answer 1 item wrong, you need to go through the activities
and assessments in this module.

What Is It
Learn more about the concepts for this module by diligently reading the
mini-lesson.
Mini-Lesson
Data gathered by the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that the
leading causes of death around the word are respiratory and circulatory diseases.
This is very alarming and something has to be done. However, it is but proper for
you to first know some of these diseases.
Information below are taken from a medical encyclopedia and facts from World
health Organization (www.who.int).
Anemia – a condition in which the red blood cells lack hemoglobin, characterized
by general body weakness and feeling of tiredness.
Arteriosclerosis – a chronic disease characterized by abnormal thickening and
hardening of the arterial walls so that blood blow through them
becomes difficult.
Asthma – a chronic lung disorder that is marked by recurring episodes of airway
obstructions manifested by labored breathing accompanied especially
by wheezing and coughing and by a sense of constriction in the chest.
This condition is usually triggered by various stimuli such as allergens
and sudden change in temperature.
Bronchitis – an illness in which the bronchi (bronchial tubes) are inflamed and
the patient coughs a lot.
Colds – a common illness that affects the nose, throat, eyes and that usually
causes coughing, sneezing and body chills.
COVID- short cut for Corona Virus Disease. It is caused by a strain of the
Corona Virus which were unknown before the outbreak began in
Wuhan China in December, 2019.
Emphysema – a condition of the lungs marked by abnormal enlargement of the
alveoli that is characterized by shortness of breath and may
lead to weakening of the heart.
Hypertension – a systemic condition accompanying high blood pressure
Tuberculosis – a highly communicable disease of humans that is caused by a
bacterium (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). It affects the lungs
and is characterized by fever, cough and difficulty in breathing.

Facts about COVID 19 (Source: World health Organization)
Common symptoms:
Fever, tiredness, dry cough. Some people may experience body aches
and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, diarrhea. On average it
takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to
show, however it can take up to 14 days. People with mild symptoms who are
otherwise healthy should self-isolate. Seek medical attention if you have a
fever, a cough, and difficulty breathing.
7
How does it spread?
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease
spreads primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose
or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes,
or speaks. These droplets are relatively heavy, do not travel far and quickly
sink to the ground. People can catch COVID-19 if they breathe in these
droplets from a person infected with the virus. These droplets can land on
objects and surfaces around the person such as tables, doorknobs and
handrails. People can become infected by touching these objects or surfaces,
then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
Preventive Measures:
Isolation means separating people who are ill with symptoms of COVID-
19 and may be infectious to prevent the spread of the disease.
