Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: What’s My Worth?

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten/ Coins
Content Standard Addressed: ● K.NR.1.4: Identify pennies, nickels, and dimes and know their
name and value.
ISTE Technology Standard What would you like students to know and
Addressed: 1.3.c Curate Information- Students be able to do by the end of this lesson:
curate information from digital resources using a I would like the students to be able to name
variety of tools and methods to create collections pennies, nickels, and dimes. I would like them
of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful to know how much a penny, nickel, and dime
connections or conclusions are worth.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I expect the students to be able to create voiceovers and add/ choose their own pictures or
visuals for the e-book.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool: PowerPoint

tool?)

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: I would introduce and plan for students to use the
PowerPoint tool by showing them my E-book design first, so they are able to see what
a final product E-book would look like. Then I would explain how I would want them
to add their own creativity to a classroom E-book. The classroom E-book would intel
all of the students having their own speaking parts and they would each pretend to be
a coin and describing what makes them that specific coin, such as color, size, or worth.
I would divide the students into groups, like pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters, and
then have each student from a group choose a characteristic about their coin. The
students would utilize the technology by drawing their coin picture and they would
each be able to record their line to put in the E-book. I will be adding the pictures into
PowerPoint and helping with the recording of their lines. Feedback will be provided
verbally by making sure their characteristic makes sense and any other support the
students may need. I will conclude the lesson by having the class watch the E-book,
giving positive feedback, and lastly having the students do an exit ticket as a formative
assessment.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology: Since the grade level the standard I chose covers
Kindergarten, I would not have them directly on the technology, while they will be in use of it
with the teacher facilitating, I would have at least one student recording their line, and while
that student is working with the technology the others would be drawing their illustrations
for the E-book. This keeps the students on task with continued focus on the learning goal.
Another way I would plan for collaboration is having the students of the collaborative pairs,
at least 4, design their pages for the E-book together. This would still need teacher
facilitation, but it would allow the students to co-use the technology by creating their E-book
the way they would like.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The tool I have decided to use for the lesson plan
supports all students because it gives them freedom to design their E-book the way they
would like. The only teacher direction will be directly with using the technology but
essentially, the students will be the ones creating the E-book themselves. The activity itself
gives students the chance to work together and make sure their characteristics are not the
same or help their peers. This tool and activity support the Engagement and Action &

Expression components of the UDL Framework.

Reflecting on enhanced learning: I feel the activity I have created will impact student
learning because it gives them a chance to be actively engaged in their learning, which
students need in the classroom. Especially for Kindergartens, having them create something
of their own will build their confidence and give them something to be proud of.
