Periodic Safety Inspection Generic for

Escalator

Introduction This document was developed to establish a generic methodology on how to perform safety
checks and tests for the relevant safety critical escalator components. However, the specific
product documentation must be followed in case of any deviation. Service technician and
CPSI inspector must evaluate the escalator configuration and safety conditions of the test.

Objective The objective of this document is to provide a consistent generic approach on how to check
and test the predefined components irrespective of the design of the escalator. In addition
more stringent national legislation, norm or code and standards always prevail.

Scope The relevant critical safety components covered by the CPSI are as follows:
1) Truss
2) Balustrade-guards
3) Brake
4) Safety circuit.

Application Exclusively for competent

professionals. Current
version of the safety manual
and any local safety
requirements must be
consulted and followed
before initiating works.
Guidance and examples are
based on recent Schindler
products. For units outside
this guidance, use where
available OEM manuals.

The skirt panel must be laterally adjusted so that a smooth transition
between the step band and the lateral guide angles or the lateral
guides or the guide rails depending on the construction is ensured.

3.1 3.7 Service brake components condition, distance between the
brake lever and brake guide or reserve stroke:
Warning: A failure of the brake could lead to serious injury to
persons and/or damage to property. Make sure that the lifting range
is correct.
Note: Wear of the brake band impairs the braking effect.
Check general condition of brake components
 Check the general condition of the brake.
 Run the escalator with the maintenance operating panel and
check that there is no abnormal noise when the brake is opening
and closing.
 Check the electrical opening in order to check the solenoid has
enough force to open the brake.
 Check the drum/disk is free from scratches and oil/grease
contamination.
 Check the lifting range and the reserve stroke.
Impact noise as an indicator of wrong brake adjustment
 If a metallic impact noise is heard while the solenoid opens the
brake, it indicates the solenoid plunger strikes too hard against its
internal stroke limiter.
 If the brake closes with an impact noise from the opening, it
indicates the opening clearance is beyond the tolerances due to
the wear of the linings.
Other indications of brake malfunction
 Excessive temperature on the brake arms/linings or brake drum
(generally blue color of the drum).
 Quick wear of the linings and/or dust of the linings in the
surroundings.
 The brake is not fully opening/closing.

centimeters. The 1st digit of the display reads

(for technical test).

The controlled electrical brake of the GFU plus frequency converter
is not active.
The transportation speed 1 is selected for travel. The unit can be
operated with the maintenance operating panel in the up and down
directions.
3.3 3.11/11.4 Safety/auxiliary brake function test/observation:
Braking distance must not deviate from the braking distance of the
service brake by more than 30 %.
Note: Before to perform this test ensure OEM documentation is
available and follow there procedure.

Safety brake test with GFU plus frequency converter
Activate the tecnical test [t_48]
Note:
 From V5209 and from V5400
 This test is only available for drives with GFU plus frequency
converter and safety brake.
 This test can only be performed upon completion of the learning
run.
 This test can only be activated during inspection operation

at standstill.
The display reads

The 3rd and 4th digits of the digital display show the operating state.
The controlled electrical brake of the GFU plus frequency converter
is not active.
The transportation speed 1 is selected for travel. The unit can be
operated with the maintenance operating panel in the up and down
directions.
Test procedure if no official procedure available:
 Start the unit with the key switch in down direction.
 Keep the service brake open in a safe way.
 Switch off the main supply and start to observe the braking
operation (example).
 Safety/auxiliary brake should be activated.
 Once stationary, close the service brake.
 After confirmation, reset the brake in the up direction.
3.4 3.8 Brake band/linings:
 Measure the thickness of the brake band "X" or linings.

4 * Safety Circuit/Sensors

Check the function of electrical safety switches one by one and sequentially when
performing the other checks/tests. Upon the activation of each switch, the movement
(always test in dynamic mode when it is safe to do so) and/or the safety circuit of the
escalator must be interrupted due to the activation of the tested switch.
 Make sure that the switch is activated by the mechanism.
 Make sure that the escalator can move after a reset of the same switch.
There is no exhaustive list of the switches and switches valid for all escalator and it is
mandatory to follow the electrical schematics of the installation.
