New Zealand
Picture yourself standing at the edge of a lake. You look down at the ground beneath your feet; it’s deep red,
and the shore of the lake is shiny yellow. Also, the water is bright green! No, don’t worry, you’re not on
another planet, you’re in New Zealand!
You’re in Wai-o-tapu Thermal* Wonderland in New Zealand’s North Island, to be exact. It’s an area with an
extremely high amount of natural thermal activity beneath the earth and surrounded by active volcanoes. This
is just one of the wide variety of unusual landscapes that this country has to offer. Take a trip to the South
Island and find even more unique scenery and some wonderful wildlife, including many types of whales,
dolphins and the cutest little blue penguins.
Would you like to walk on an 8-mile-long river of solid ice? Well, the South Island’s got two! Very few glaciers
in the world are as easy to get to as the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers in the Southern Alps. You can climb up
onto them, walk across the top of them or even take a helicopter ride over them. This frozen landscape of ice
caves and snow-capped mountains provides some truly breathtaking scenery.
Head south from here and you get to the famous city of Queenstown, adventure capital of the world. It’s the
perfect destination for thrill seekers, who can do all sorts of extreme sports like bungee jumping, jet boating,
rock climbing, skydiving, canyon trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, downhill skiing and much, much more.
Further south again is Fiordland National Park. Yeah, that’s right; New Zealand’s also got fjords! In this
corner of the country you can take a canoe on shining lakes and fjords between forest-covered islands, steep
cliffs and spectacular waterfalls.
New Zealand truly is a marvellous country with so many amazing things to see and do. So much so that it
can be difficult to even know where to begin your visit. Once you do, though, you won’t be disappointed.
That’s because, as people say, the only problem with New Zealand is leaving!
