    The optic nerve exits the eyeball through the optic disc located at the back of the eye. It travels through the optic canal within the skull to reach the middle cranial fossa. In the middle cranial fossa, the optic nerves from each eye meet and form the optic chiasm, where some nerve fibers cross over. The optic nerves then continue as the optic tracts to relay visual information to the brain.
