Answers
1. The deal is that if Trevor gives Tom a better cut on the CDs he was selling, plus a
bunch of free music for himself, Tom will come back with the most beautiful girl
he’s ever seen in his life, and she’ll be Trevor’s date for the dance.
2. She had beautiful eyes, beautiful golden yellow-brown skin. It was like she
glowed. She was shy and didn’t speak much.
3. Tom made a deal with Abel. If Babiki’s the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen in
his life, he’ll let Trevor take the BMW. Then they brought her around to see Abel.
After Abel chatted with her for a few minutes, he was convinced.
4. Bongani, the middleman from Trevor’s CD business
5. The woman took his hair and painted relaxer in his hair.
Reason: The relaxer started tingling and by the time it was actually burning it had
already taken off layers of his scalp.
6. She squealed when he walked in the door and said he looked like a pretty girl.
7. Mazda. She was completely pissed off because he was an hour late picking her up.
8. She probably hadn’t wanted to go to the dance with him in the first place; she
probably owed Tom a favor. She was left sitting and waiting for him for one hour.
She realized he couldn’t even hold a conversation with her. He’d driven her
around and gotten lost in the dark. She didn’t speak anyone’s language in the
dance.
9. give (one) a makeover: To alter one's appearance, especially by making dramatic
changes to one's hair, clothing, makeup, etc.
shut sth down: If a business or a large piece of equipment shuts down or
someone shuts it down, it stops operating.
tingling: to have a feeling as if a lot of sharp points are being
put quickly and lightly into your body
10. Language plays an important role in our communication. In the story, Babiki only
spoke Pedi which was the language that Trevor didn’t speak, and that has caused
the understanding gap between them.
