The key advantages of series compensation are increased power transmission capacity, improved voltage regulation, improved system stability, and adjustment of load sharing in parallel operation. Shunt compensation improves power factor by compensating for inductive loads, reducing power losses and voltage drops in transmission lines. Simulation results showed improvements in power factor and reduced reactive power from both series and shunt capacitive compensation. However, consideration of resonance, stability, and economic factors is important.

Aim of the Experiment: To apply Series and Shunt Capacitive

Compensation in a Transmission line.

.
Theory:-

Series Capacitive Compensation:-

Series capacitive compensation is applied in a transmission line to compensate the effect of
line inductance in the network. Unlike shunt compensation, series compensation is not
changed with changing load because line inductance is constant. After applying
compensation line reactance reduces to XL-XC from original XL. The prominent
disadvantage of series compensation are
• Increase in power transmission capacity
• Improvement in voltage regulation
• Improvement in system stability
• Adjustment of load sharing in parallel operation

Shunt Capacitive Compensation:-

Shunt Capacitive compensation is one of the methods to improve power factor of the power
systems. A power system is mostly loaded with the inductive (lagging) load. A bank of shunt
capacitors is applied preferably near the load end to compensate the inductive part of the
load. This compensation may be applied at load level, substation level , or at transmission
level depending upon the suitability. The prominent advantage of shunt capacitive
compensation are as follows
• Less power loss in transmission line (by decreasing reactive current)
• Increased capacity to supply power to load
• Less voltage drops and hence better regulation
• Less stress on generator excitation system and less excitation loss
• Increased life of power systems equipment due to less loading
• Better ability to system to meet peak load demands
It should also be noted that the leading power factor of electrical network is also undesirable
And due to certain factors is considered more disadvantageous than lagging one so with the
varying load, amount of compensation should also be altered if feasible. If the sharp
variation in capactitive value is not suitable then fixed value of compensation should be
applied only to cancel out consistent inductive load

Conclusion:-

This experiment on series and shunt capacitive compensation revealed notable

improvements in power factor and reduction of reactive power in the electrical system.
Series capacitors mitigated inductive effects, enhancing power factor, while shunt capacitors
reduced reactive power. Consideration of resonance issues, stability, and economic factors
is vital. Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of compensation, but real-world
validation is essential. Optimization opportunities were identified to strike a balance
between power factor enhancement, system stability, and cost-effectiveness. Overall, the
experiment underscores the potential benefits of capacitive compensation in optimizing
electrical systems.
