Prioritizing Mental Health: A Review

Mental health plays a vital role for overall well-being, psychological, emotional, and social

aspects. It is crucial in an individual’s ability to be productive, maintain healthy relationships,

and cope with existing problems. Mental health is essential at every stage of life, but various

factors can affect it, Including life experiences, hereditary factors, and external stressors.

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), promoting mental health and

well-being is vital for overall health and productivity (WHO, 2014). While mental health issues

are common, they are distinct from mental illnesses, recognizing the importance of mental

health and seeking help when needed is essential.

Neglecting the importance of mental health can cause serious consequences. Mental health is

not something to be taken for granted. As of today, it is very great to see a shift in mental health

awareness amongst people as more individuals have come forward and start to seek help.

Mental health should not just be a one man responsibility but every community should help

conquer this problem.

Many individuals struggle with mental health issues therefore understanding the importance of

external support from either family or friends and treatment should change not just the people

but more specifically the higher sectors of the society’s belief in the significance of prioritizing

mental well-being. It’s a reminder that mental health should be part of everyone’s everyday

conversations and should not be neglected.

In today’s world, mental health issues have become increasingly prevalent, partly due to the

stresses of modern life, social changes, and the impact of global events. The COVID-19

pandemic, for instance, has highlighted the need for mental health support on a global scale

which has led to a rise in anxiety and depression (Pfefferbaum & North, 2020). Furthermore, the

burden on students’ mental health persists, with a recent study in the Journal of American

College Health highlighting academic stress as a significant concern (Conley & Chiu, 2021).

There’s no really denying how much academic stress has drained students and deeply impacted

their mental stability. With this, problems surrounding mental health, should not just be an

individual concern but rather a societal one.

As mental health problems keep on progressing, people should also play their part by increasing

awareness, improving access to services, and building a supportive community for all

individuals. In addition, investing in mental health services and policies can prevent a significant

number of mental health issues and improve overall well-being (Patel, et al., 2018). People can

slowly address the rising challenges related to mental health, and in time, lead a more open and

strong community in which every individual can flourish with the support they need.
