Cellular Respiration

Cellular Energy Production: Aerobic Cellular Respiration

Intro

Morning person analogy: Cells are constantly active, unlike waking up.

Cells need ATP (adenosine triphosphate) as energy currency.

ATP Overview

ATP as a nucleic acid with three phosphates.

Essential for cell processes, and survival.

Aerobic Cellular Respiration

All cells (prokaryotes or eukaryotes) need ATP.

Different processes for ATP production.

Eukaryotic Cells

Focus on cells with membrane-bound organelles (nucleus, mitochondria).

Examples: protists, fungi, animals, plants.

Mitochondria's Role

Mitochondria are crucial in eukaryotic cells for aerobic respiration.

The process involves the mitochondrial matrix.

Cellular Respiration 1
Steps of Aerobic Cellular Respiration

1. Glycolysis

Cytoplasmic process. (in cytoplasm)

Anaerobic, doesn't require oxygen.

Converts glucose to pyruvate yields 2 ATP and 2 NADH.

2. Intermediate Step (Formation of acetyl coenzyme A / Pyruvate

Oxidation)

Transport of pyruvate to mitochondria.

Cellular Respiration 2
Oxidation of pyruvate to acetyl CoA, releases CO2, and produces 2
NADH.

3. Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle)

Aerobic process in the mitochondrial matrix.

Produces CO2, 2 ATP, 6 NADH, and 2 FADH2.

4. Electron Transport Chain and Chemiosmosis (Oxidative

phosphorylation)

In the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Aerobic, requires oxygen.

NADH and FADH2 made in other steps deposit their electrons in the
electron transport chain, turning back into their "empty" forms (NAD+,
FAD)

A complex process involving electron transfer, proton pumping, and

ATP synthase.

Produces a significant amount of ATP.

Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor, and forms water (H2O).

ATP Production Estimates

Variable ATP production per glucose molecule (26-34 in electron transport

chain).

Total range: 30-38 ATP when considering all three steps.

Alternative ATP Production

Fermentation in the absence of oxygen (less efficient). Glycolysis can take

place without oxygen in a process called fermentation. The other three
stages of cellular respiration—pyruvate oxidation, the citric acid cycle, and
oxidative phosphorylation—require oxygen in order to occur. Only oxidative
phosphorylation uses oxygen directly, but the other two stages can't
run without oxidative phosphorylation.
