CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Trends and have been going on for a long time, but since the beginning of the

technological era, the word “trend” took on a new connotation.

Trends in simple definition may vary based on context and timeline of usage.

On some application it may define as an inclination, while in our study it is defined

as something that is currently very popular to a group of people. And for some

following trends are something they feel they are required to follow. This makes

people have a sense of compulsory behavior of following trends. But to give

clarification, following trends are not bad or wrong in a sense, or at least that’s a

popular opinion. The problem is its conversion to become an individual’s coping

mechanism. That is the problem that shall be discussed in this quantitative research

paper.

On the other hand, the most prevalent theory when it comes to following trends

is the “Bandwagon Effect” by Dan Rice. Which simply means a psychological effect

on people when they see others following trends it stimulates them to follow as well.

Its origin came from “band wagon” in the 19th century for political campaigns. It is a

parade float that encourages people to jump aboard and enjoy the music. This
STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
principle was used to link candidates with the notion of having fun and to point out

those who are not on the band wagon as missing out. (The Bandwagon Effect: Why

People Tend to Follow the Crowd, 2015)

This is important because, bandwagons are signs that other people believe

something or are doing something can trigger the thought that “if other people like

this, then I should too”. Other people’s judgment becomes their base of intuitive

notion, on the assumption that it can be beneficial to think in the same way as others.

In that context, present-day people are jumping aboard and compulsively

following trends, in their feeling that it is required of them to do so. In their ability of

doing so they feel social relevance in the society and make them feel more confident.

Considering the idea that their capability of being able to keep up with the trend is

standards of the level of their self-esteem and social belongingness. Which implies

the reason that people are making following trends their coping-mechanism in order

to cope up with what they are lacking on. In which this study’s case is their self-

esteem and social relevance.

One of the few reasons why the researcher chose this topic is first because it is

relatable for anyone. As already established, everyone follows trends. This reason

makes this study’s topic relatable for everyone who can read it. This idea reinforces the

research paper’s argument on the importance of this study. It also supports the

researcher’s reason as to why they chose this topic.

Another for the researcher’s main reasons is, the topic’s prevalence or mainly it’s

degree of effect. How compulsively following trends turns into one’s coping
STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
mechanism. It is also used as one of the statement of the problem in this study, where

the reason being is because it is the researchers first idea in making this research paper.

The final reason of the researchers is the topic’s contemporariness. Because of the

present-day generation. Today’s generation has never been more advanced than any

other previous generations. The pace which this world flows right now has never been

faster. People of all age, gender, race, beliefs, and others, know that if they’re not going

to be able to keep up with the pace, they’ll be left out. As can be observed and what has

already mentioned, the prevalence of trends nowadays gives people something to rely

on in order to keep up with this world. As mentioned earlier, there’s nothing wrong with

following the trends. But the problem starts, when people not only apply trend as

something to use to be able to keep up with this world. It is when something as

inconsistent as trend is exercised as a coping mechanism to what an individual is

lacking on. This becomes the problem with our present-day community. Which is why

the researchers choose this topic, it’s the stigma that comes with it. It is the modern-day

problem that has a chance to affect more generations in the future.

As an author’s note base on Dan Rice’s Bandwagon effect is “The implication is

that since so any people are doing it, it must be good or at least acceptable.” This reason

conforms with the argument of this study.

In summary, in our modern-day world, people nowadays are so dramatically

affected by the people around them. If one is around people who read a lot, it stimulates

that person to read more. If one is around people who are politically aware, it urges that

person to pay more attention to political events.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effect of being a compulsive social follower

to trends of Sta. Elena High School Students school year 2019-2020 as their coping

mechanism on their self-esteem and social belongingness.

More specifically, it seeks answers to the following research question.

1) What is the profile of the respondents based on the following:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Grade level

2) What are the trends that the respondents follow:

2.1 Fashion Trend

2.1 Food Trend

3) What is the degree of effect on being a compulsive social follower to trend as a

coping mechanism to the respondents?

STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study provides a critical review on the degree of effect on being a

compulsive social follower to trends that is used as a coping mechanism for self-esteem

and social belongingness. This study is significant because of the benefits that it could

offer to the following groups: Compulsive social follower. This study would benefit the

ones who are affected by the problem being discussed. This would allow them to identify

what might be wrong or right about what they're doing which could give them chance to

improve their selves. People with low self-esteem. Depending on the results of this

research they can be able to know if being a compulsive social follower to trend can

actually be good or rid their selves on the idea due to the chance that it might be a bad

idea. People who feel socially exclude. In terms of social belongingness, almost the same

as people with low self-esteem. Future researchers. The result of this study may serve as

reference for the future.

IV. SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This Study aims to determine the degree of effect of being a compulsive social

follower to trends of Sta. Elena High School students as their coping mechanism. This

study is composing of ten (10) student respondents from each level of Grade 7 to Grade

12 level of Sta. Elena High School, District 1, Division of Marikina City during the first

semester of S.Y 2019-2020.

CHAPTER II

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

I. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This part of the study will be discussing the related articles and studies. This

section of the research will benefit the study to further support the ideas that were

input in to it.

According to the blog of Joaquin D. People should consider first their

situation and their social status before following the trends. This statement is

different to this study in some way because in this study, people were being a

compulsive social follower to trends which means they were deciding without

thinking in accordance to achieve their desire. He also include in his blog that

some people expend a lot of money just to follow trendy and some people were not

aware that they already doing bad just to follow trends. Joaquin, J. Dave S. (2009)

Fashion trend: isang pagsusuri.

According to the article written by Bloom L. This phenomenon does not

allow each individual to examine their particular values and beliefs to see if they

prevailing trend is something with which they choose to take part. Connection to

this study, people follow trends without hesitation because it doesn't affect their

values and beliefs. (L. and C. Bloom “The Bandwagon Effect. Are we going to

think for ourselves”. 2017).

STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania answered the question

"Why does the youth of today have a strong admiration to the different trends"

according to them it is normal to an individual to desire acceptance, specifically

because it is what they need. But sometimes companies taking this as an

opportunity to spread trends. Also according to them, they describe youth as famous

and popular because they wear and have those products. In relation to this study

people, mostly the youth have this mindset to be a compulsive social follower to

trends for them to be called and to feel that they are popular because of the brand

names of the products that they're wearing and eating.

There is a correlation between the study on the effect of social media likes have

on a teenager’s brain liken it to winning money or eating chocolate the study also

indicate that people are more likely to engage with posts that have been

endorsed/liked by a large amount of their peers – a follow the crowd mentality. In

this study following the crowd mentality is somehow related on being a compulsive

social follower to the point that If many people follow them its either they make the

trend or if not they are the one being controlled by the current trend system, it may

affect their behavior as an individual as well. (Vygotsky, L.S. (1980). Mind in

society. The development of higher psychological processes. Harvard university.

According to Kendra Cherry bandwagon effect refers to the tendency people

have to adopt a certain behavior, style, or attitude simply because everyone else is

doing it. The more people that adopt a particular trend, the more likely it becomes

that other people will also hop on the bandwagon. She also stated that bandwagon

effect is part of a larger group of cognitive biases or errors in thinking that influence
STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
the judgements and decisions that people make. Cognitive biases are often designed

to help people think and reason more quickly, but they often introduce

miscalculations and mistakes. For example, in fashion, many people begin wearing

a certain style of clothing as they see others adopt the same fashion. In Food, as

more and more people began supporting current food trends, people are getting

more attracted to the trend to the point where they feel forced to follow the trend in

fear of being left out. (K. Cherry “Bandwagon Effect as a Cognitive Bias.” May 4,

2019).

According to the study Consumer’s Patronage of Healthy Meal Options in a

Food Establishment One of their articles says Dining-out or eating-out has been

increasingly popular among Filipinos. More Filipinos are resorting to dining-out

than eating at home as shown from the shopper trends report conducted among

1,783 males and females, aged 16-65 years old. Results of the survey revealed that

25% of consumers eat-out at fast food restaurants at least one a week in 2014 a

contrast to the 2012 survey with only 14% as they clearly stated to their study.

Shopper trends report also confirmed that there are now fewer shopping baskets

containing food items that need to be cooked at home as Filipinos go to fast food

restaurants (Nielsen 2014) This implies that Filipinos are tend to go with the trend

for the sake of what they really want to eat compromising their health.

On the other hand, a study “Why do people follow fashion trends?” . “A new

outfit that fits with what magazines and advertisements are promoting can be really

pleasurable to buy and wear. It can give you a new identity, even if it’s only for one

night. The flip side of these desires is anxiety – about not fitting in, not being up-to-
STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
date, and being an outsider. The international fashion industry plays on these

negative feelings, to make people feel they must keep up with new trends and keep

shopping. This shows how it affects their mental health proving that being

Compulsive social follower and its effect is very effective to the society.

In summary of the part of the research, it’s safe to say that most of the studies,

articles, statements, and all other written information. Conforms to the idea that

there is a significant degree of the effects of being a compulsive social follower to

trends to the people of present day generation, the following articles and studies

supports this study’s claim even more.

Bandwagon in their Self – Esteem and effect is a psychological

Social Belongingness
phenomenon that has something great to do with

cognitive bias. It discusses the person’s

transcendence to trends in able to stay in or not miss out.

STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
Rational Choice Theory, basically this theory states one’s reliance on rational

calculation to achieve the desired outcome.

Social Belongingness hypothesis was proposed by Baumeister and Leary in

1995, who suggested that human beings have an almost universal need to form and

maintain at least some degree of interpersonal relationships with other humans.

Self-Verification Theory proposes that people want others to see them as they

see themselves. The theory grew out of the writings of the symbolic interactionists,

who held that people form self-views so that they can predict the responses of others

and know how to act toward them.

The Bandwagon effect basically conforms to the idea that this theory affects

people’s personality in general. Because whatever the trend maybe, people adapt to it,

their decisions adapt, their views adapt.

So due to the phenomena of bandwagon effect, people will still be rationalizing

which trend could benefit them the most, in terms of their self-esteem and social

belongingness. In this context, people will now choose whatever fits their desired

outcome.

Social belongingness hypothesis states that basically a person needs to form and

maintain a degree of interpersonal relationship with others. This need becomes the

driving factor of people to rely on Bandwagon to trend on their coping mechanism in

their feeling of lacking of social belongingness.

STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
In self verification theory, mainly their discussion of self-esteem, in this theory,

is a discussion about how people desire to predict other’s view of them, so that they

can enable themselves to know how to interact with them. Almost same as the social

belongingness theory. This idea serves as the driving force of people to adapt their

selves, adapt to trends, which in return could benefit them in the way they desire.

METHODS OF RESEARCH USED

This study used descriptive method of research to describe the

characteristics of the phenomenon that people often do something primarily.

Correlational method of research is also used in this study to measure, understand

and assess the statistical relationship between the phenomenon that people often do

something primarily because other people doing it. And survey method of research

is also used in this study as a measurement procedure that involve asking questions

to the respondents.

SOURCES OF DATA

This study is composed of ten (10) student respondents from each level of

grade 7 to grade 12 of Sta. Elena High School. The researchers conduct a survey

questionnaire which contain questions about being a compulsive social follower to

trends as coping mechanism. Their identity was confidentially secured, as one of

the researchers' responsibilities.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENTS

The researchers used survey questionnaire as a research instrument to

gather information from the respondents to be able to know the implication of

being a bandwagon and trend as coping mechanisms of our chosen respondents.

The students of Sta. Elena High School will be given survey questionnaire to be

answered honestly. The researcher’s questionnaires were developing with the

guidance and supervision of the researcher's teacher.

STA. ELENA HIGH SCHOOL
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers conduct a brainstorming for them to know how they will

conduct their survey. The researchers will use survey questionnaires that contains ten

(10) questions, to be given to their respondents. With the permission of Dr. Jeffrey C.

Trinidad of Sta. Elena High School principal, the researchers will be able to conduct

their survey. The survey questionnaires were developing with the guidance and

supervision of their practical research teacher.

STATISTICAL TOOLS/TREATMENT OF DATA

This study will use a statistical tool that the researchers formulated themselves in

gathering the data. The formula that we’ll use will estimate the sampling size out of the

wide range of population. In simple definition the statistical tool will use ten (10)

students per grade level, with six grade level, which are from grade level 7 to grade

level 12. This will give us a total of sixty (60) respondents overall. With the aid of our

research adviser, we moved to the notion of using this technique with the intention to

help the progression of this research study.

Together with the researcher’s own statistical tool, this study also used random

stratified sampling method. Which is basically a process of formulating a sample based

on chance. The reason this method was chosen by the researchers is mainly because of

the idea of having random sample, leaving the choice to chance. This strengthens the

data gathered, due to the reason that the data is not tempered by the researcher’s

personal affiliations.
