Scopophobia

The paranoia where you feel like you’re being watched is a fear that we have all

experienced at least once in our lifetimes. This is because our brains are wired to notice

whether or not someone is watching us. This gaze detection system can help us

perceive if we are being threatened. Sometimes we hear a noise that is too faint, but

loud enough that can trigger fear, which makes our brain try and formulate a reason that

explains the noise. Some people face paranoia more extremely than others, and in

which case it turns out to be a phobia. After you find who’s looking at you, you feel

some sort of small relief in a way because you found who it is and where it is. But what

if you couldn’t? What if you’re in a situation where you’re alone and you can’t see

anything but still feel like you’re being watched?

In my Capstone, I am going to create that feeling and make the audience feel like

they’re being watched. But the twist is, they aren’t. By using sound, the environment,

and the title of my film, I’m going to deceive the audience into believing they’re being

watched. Each event will occur differently. First, it will be the title of my film, which will

be very dramatic to capture the audience’s attention, then I will make the audience
adjust to the environment, and lastly, I will add sound to further convince the audience

that someone is watching them.

The name of my film will be “You’re Being Watched”. This will make the audience

grasp the idea that they’re not alone in the environment they are in and build up anxiety.

It is very easy to change a place where you feel safe, to an environment you no longer

feel secure in. This is because when we are accustomed to a peaceful setting, we don’t

expect something to completely demolish that safety. The astonishment and the

uncertainty creates anxiety, and the anxiety tricks us into overthinking. For example,

let’s say you are in your own home, watching the news, and they are uncovering a case

involving your neighbor who was stalked. The unfortunate circumstance didn’t occur to

you, but because it took place near your home, you will start to overthink yourself into

believing that you’re being stalked as well.

When we feel like we’re being watched, it is most likely because we’re in an

environment where we can’t see anything. The woods in Burrillville is the environment I

am going to film in because when it gets dark, it's completely dark. There are no street

lights in certain areas and no houses with lights. The audience is going to get a glimpse

of what the woods look like in daytime, but then it will switch to night time in order to

make the darkness engulf the spectators. In addition, it will have many first person point

of view shots to really convince them that they are in the woods experiencing everything

first hand.
I have different sounds that I want to incorporate into my film that associates with

the concept of my idea. My idea revolves around anxiety, overthinking, and fear. When

we experience those emotions, sometimes we start to hallucinate. We start thinking

someone or something walked past us when nothing did, someone said our name when

no one did, seeing something out of the corner of our eyes but nothing was there. All of

these examples are what I want to put into my film. My goal is to add whispering, faint or

loud footsteps, breathing, and screaming to further convince the spectators that

someone is with them.
