OX AND LAMB SOLO COLLECTION

FOR SOLO MULTIPLE PERCUSSION

By KEITH ALEO
for solo percussion by Keith Aleo

Setup and Performance Notes Movement 1 - Woodblocks

This movement is scored for three wood blocks or temple
blocks. The sounds should be low in pitch and not too piercing in
their sounds. Yarn mallets should be used, and should be hard
enough to produce clarity, but not too harsh. A handle castanet
is used directly on the low woodblock as if it were a mallet and
the sound of the woodblock/castanet together should produce
a distinctly different sound.

Movement 2 - Triangles
The two triangles should be mounted on a Black Swamp
RecPlate to eliminate any external sounds, insuring the purity of
only the triangle sound. Larger triangles, 8” and 10”, would be
preferable for their long sustain and warm sound.

Movement 3 - Tambourines
The three tambourines should be laid flat on a table covered
with foam to allow the instruments to sound when the
performer strikes them with their hands, fingers, and fists.
Techniques for playing are guided by indications in the score,
but different techniques and interpretations are encouraged.
The three tambourines should be clearly pitched low, medium,
high, from left to right.

Program Notes

I’ve always been fascinated by polyrhythms; teaching them, playing them, and seeing them in music. I find myself
tapping them out on my legs as I’m walking somewhere; 2 against 3, then 3 against 2, the same rhythm with a different
feel. There’s nothing like a polyrhythm that grooves! In 2016, when the Black Swamp Percussion Company approached
me about writing a piece for their instruments, I conceived a piece based on polyrhythms. Each of the three movements
is inspired by a different polyrhythm and is scored for a different set of Black Swamp instruments; movement 1 for three
woodblocks or temple blocks, movement 2 for two triangles, and movement 3 for three tambourines.

The name Tupelo comes from a type of tree that grows in swamps in my native home of Florida.
