PILE DRIVING MONITOR

BECAUSE EVERY PILE IS IMPORTANT

WHY?
Dr. Julian Seidel is an international expert in foundation design and dynamic pile testing. With his expertise in dynamic pile testing why did he develop the Pile Driving Monitor? For many years I have realized that there is a significant and unrecognized risk in driven pile projects. Dynamic pile testing will only confirm capacity for 2 to 10% of project piles. The other 90 to 98% are driven to set on the assumption that the piling hammer operates consistently. Years of dynamic pile testing experience has shown that on many projects delivered energy varies by 30% or more. The consequence is that piles will routinely be 30% or more under-capacity. The PDM remotely measures pile set and rebound (temporary compression) and pile velocity to allow full and simple quality control of EVERY PILE.

VIBRATORY INSTALLATION*
Steel tubes and sheet-piles are often vibrated into place rather than driven. Vibration can be faster and cheaper. But unlike driven piles, the installation process is not usually monitored. The PDM can continuously record vibration frequency, vibration amplitude and penetration rate, and infer installation capacity. The PDM brings QA to vibratory installation, allows optimal selection of frequency and power to maximize penetration speed and allows layer changes to be mapped.

HOW?
The PDM uses state-of-the-art opto-electronics to make non-contact measurements of pile movement from 10 to 30m distance from the pile, which removes the PDM from the effects of ground vibrations. Even from this distance, set is measured to 0.1 mm resolution, and the high digitization rate means that rebound and peak pile velocity can also be measured. No gauges or cables are required. A disposable reflective sticker is all that is placed on the pile - then just point and shoot! Finally - pile measurements for EVERY PILE that are fast, simple, accurate reliable and safe.

MARINE PILING MONITORING*

Monitoring pile set in marine conditions is difficult enough, but measurement of rebound which is important for pile capacity evaluation has never been possible. With the PDM, measurement of set and rebound for marine piles is now possible from distances of up to 30m. The PDM can be positioned on a stable location - land, wharf, jack-up platform or previously driven pile or pile bent. With the marine piling software module the PDM can calculate set and rebound even on a floating barge!

HAMMER MONITORING*
The PDM is not restricted to monitoring driven piles - it can also be used to measure the ram impact to measure hammer efficiency, velocity or monitor the complete hammer cycle to confirm hammer stroke (STR), optimize hammer operation by adjusting delay time (DEL), or troubleshoot hammer operation.

PILE CAPACITY
Like it or not, 90 to 98% of piles installed are untested and being accepted using a dynamic formula or simple bearing graph which assumes constant hammer efficiency. For the first time, the PDM implements an improved dynamic formula which adjusts the delivered energy to EVERY PILE. The PDM provides real-time pile capacity evaluation during driving or on restrike. The PDM can be used for final pile acceptance (final 10 blows), or it can be used for continuous monitoring of partial or full pile driving sequence. QC documentation is available within seconds.

The PDM includes onboard accelerometers to measure ground vibrations from piling or vibration activities at the same time as pile measurements are being made. The PDM can report peak ground accelerations (PGA) and peak particle velocity (PPV).

PILE LENGTH & DAMAGE*

Two additional key areas of Quality Assurance are verification of pile length and pile damage detection. With current techniques, pile length and pile damage can only be confirmed for the 2 to 10% of piles which are dynamically tested. With the PDM it is now possible to check the length of EVERY PILE and the location and severity of any damage at the time of driving. With the PDM, the engineer and client can be confident that EVERY PILE is the correct length, undamaged and the right capacity.

SAFETY
Measurement of blow count to confirm capacity is the normal method in some countries. But blow count can be unreliable because changes in hammer performance go undetected. In other countries traditional pile set and rebound are measured directly on the pile during piling operations. The measurement of rebound can be used to check hammer performance, but it is an unsafe practice. The PDM is a major advance in occupational health and safety (OH&S) allowing non-contact monitoring of EVERY PILE. There is no excuse for putting the safety of workers at risk. traditional unsafe set measurement

SPT MONITORING*
The PDM can be used to monitor SPT site investigation testing. The PDM records hammer energy, hammer impact velocity, SPT blow count, set vs penetration, SPT analysis and energy correction. There is no need for gauges and cabling, and the results are stable and unaffected by the high accelerations of the steel-steel impact. *Software release 2010.
