1.1. Software ................................................................................................ 8

Who should use this software?............................................................. 8

User Guide 7
Software

1.1. Software
PetroMod petroleum systems modeling software combines seismic, well, and
geological information to model the evolution of a sedimentary basin. PetroMod
software will predict if, and how, a reservoir has been charged with hydrocarbons,
including the source and timing of hydrocarbon generation, migration routes,
quantities, and hydrocarbon type in the subsurface or at surface conditions.
PetroMod software comes with a number of standard kinetics calibration models as
well as biomarker kinetics. Nonetheless, certain scenarios might require adjustments
to these kinetics functions. The PetroMod Calibration Editor is a specially
designed and easy-to-use tool for customizing calibration kinetics.
As part of the PetroMod software suite, the Calibration Editor helps you predict
the maturity of layers and targeted hydrocarbon source rocks with maximum
accuracy. Use the tables in the Calibration Editor to create your own kinetics
models with values such as activation energy, vitrinite reflectance, initial ratio and
transformation ratio. You can also enter the reaction order and change the
interpolation method as well as determine the valid range of the reaction by
entering the start and end values. There is also a facility for testing newly entered
calibration kinetics before applying them to a model.
The data you enter is then used to calibrate the maturity of the layers according to
their kinetics and their depositional history.
The calibration models you define in the Calibration Editor are listed in the
Output>Kinetics folder of the Simulator interface and as new overlays in
simulated models.

Who should use Specialist basin and petroleum system modelers whose responsibilities range from
this software? petroleum resource assessments on a regional scale, to petroleum charge risk
assessments on a play or prospect scale.

Calibration tabs

Fig. 2-2 The Calibration Editor Graphical User Interface for kinetics models.

The Calibration Editor includes 4 kinetics models that come with your PetroMod
license.
• Sweeney & Burnham (1990) and Larter (1989) for %R0
• Dutta (1986) and Pytte & Reynolds (1989) for the smectite-illite conversion.
These kinetics models are listed in the Calibration Model drop down list on the
Toolbar. Select a model from the list to load the corresponding data into the
General tab.
When you create a new calibration model, it is automatically added to the drop
down list (see Chapter 3. Create and Edit Kinetics Calibration Models).

The General tab Each model has different parameters for its reaction kinetics. These parameters are
located in the General tab (Fig. 2-3). For the predefined calibration models they
are read-only and grayed out.
When you create a user-defined calibration model, either by creating a new
calibration model or copying one of the predefined ones, the fields are white and
you can edit the input parameters. You can also change the assigned reaction: Use
the Reaction drop down list to combine one of the predefined reactions with
individual input parameters or create a new reaction kinetics.
For an explanation of each parameter see Chapter 3. Input Parameters.

edit new multipoint curves (see Chapter 3. Create and Edit Multipoint Curves).

The Test tab Use the Test tab to verify the parameters you entered in the General tab. The
Test tab contains two graphs: Reaction progress and Reaction Rate per million
years. Both graphs plot vitrinite reflectance on the Y-axis against either time or
temperature on the X-axis (Fig. 2-4).
Use the radio buttons below the graphs to change the X-axis.
Enter values in the fields at the top of the tab to adjust the temperature range, time
span and heating rate. Press Enter to update the graphs.

Create and Edit Kinetics Calibration Models

Input Parameters When you create a new calibration kinetics, all the parameters are set to 0 and must
be adjusted. The parameters are described below.

Reaction order The reaction order is the number of reactants on whose concentrations the reaction
depends. For a zero-order reaction, which is independent of the concentration of a
reactant, enter “0.00”. For a first order reaction, which depends on the concentration
of one reactant, enter “1.00” and so forth.
Most geochemical processes are related to first order reactions and hence depend
on the concentration of one reactant only.

Start and End value These parameters define the minimum (start) and maximum (end) values of the
data for the selected calibration model.

Interpolation method Choose either an exponential or linear interpolation method. If you select a curve
from the Curve option, the curve will be used instead of the interpolation method.

Unit Use this option to change the unit of the calibration data. Changing the unit will
affect the unit of the data that is output to the Simulator. You can check the
selected units of all calibration models in the Table tab. The units on the
Multipoint tab are not affected and must be changed separately (optional).

Curve Use this option to add a curve that correlates the progress of the reaction
(transformation) to the calibration parameter (e.g VRo%). The selected curve is
used instead of the interpolation method. To edit or create curves, use the
Multipoint tab (see 3.2. Create and Edit Multipoint Curves).

Reaction Use the Reaction drop down list to select a reaction that describes the activation
energy and initial ratio. You can choose one of the predefined reactions, or create a

new reaction by clicking the Create new reaction button .

accuracy for calibration models. To improve the accuracy of the calibration results,
you can Create a multipoint curve or Edit a multipoint curve instead of using an
interpolation method.
