How to use these exercises:
These exercises are designed to challenge you technically
while building a vocabulary specific to a Hip Hop and R&B-
influenced modern style. You’ll notice that some of these
exercises have multiple challenges built in to make them as
useful as possible. For example, Exercise 5 provides you with
interesting moving harmony while also building your right
hand improvisational vocabulary with licks that contain hip
hop inflections.

I recommend that you practice each of these exercises in two

parts:

1. First, master the technique, being able to play directly

through the exercise in all keys without stopping.

2. Once you are technically proficient, use each exercise as a

jumping off point for inserting the content it into your
improvisation.

All in all, you will see great improvement in your ability to

emulate greats in a modern Hip Hop-influenced style.

As always, feel free to email me with any questions you might

Noah Kellman has built an impressive reputation as a jazz pianist and educator. In 2008 at age
16, he was the youngest person to attend the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency, where he
worked with Dr. Billy Taylor and performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC with
other participants from around the world. He was also awarded eight Downbeat Student Music
Awards. In 2009, Downbeat Magazine selected him as the “Best High School Jazz Soloist” in the
country. From 2009 to 2010, Kellman attended the Brubeck Institute, where he studied and
performed with jazz greats as Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier, Taylor
Eigsti, and others.

A recipient of two ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards for his compositions "The
Piemaker" (2011) and “Get Lost” (2008), Noah Kellman graduated from New York University
with a Master’s Degree in Scoring For Film & Multimedia. In 2017, Noah was part of the
ASCAP/Columbia Film Scoring Workshop, where he worked with director Federico Spiazzi and
composed the music for the Columbia University Film Festival trailer. He went on to receive the
2017 ASCAP Henry Mancini Music Fellowship after recording a 12-piece big band for the score.

Noah is also working currently on various innovative multimedia projects, including To Be With
Hamlet, a live, Shakespeare performance that takes place in virtual reality; Where Shadows
Slumber, a mobile video game that uses an interactive shadow to reveal hidden
objects; and Plague the Peasants, a 2.5D Real-Time Strategy game in which the player plays as a
plague infecting a village. Noah also worked alongside composer Grace Kelly as Music Producer
for Raphael Sbarge’s 2017 film The Bird Who Could Fly, which won an array of awards at the

A lover of all narrative music, Noah continues to create cinematic soundscapes that intersect the
acoustic and electronic worlds. In the songwriting world, Noah is currently arranging and
orchestrating for up-and-coming songwriter/producer Elliot Moss. He has also garnered attention
across numerous media, including a feature on Indie Shuffle upon releasing his song "Just Let It
Go" under his stage name, “Nozart.” In 2015, he toured the country as keyboardist/synthesist for
Elliot Moss as they opened for the Cold War Kids on their winter national tour.
