Where would you expect to find graffiti? On walls and bridges? Perhaps in special
exhibitions? But probably not all over the front of a historic Scottish castle.
But soon that’s exactly where you will be able to see it. And this is not vandalism
on a grand scale. Four graffiti artists, who are well-respected in their home
country of Brazil, have been commissioned by the owner to completely cover one
side of the castle with bright, colourful graffiti.
The reason is that the outer covering of the walls of the castle is in very bad
condition and in a couple of years it will need to be replaced. The family thought
it would be interesting to have the graffiti painted on until then. The artists will be
staying at the castle and working on it for a month. After that it will no doubt
become a tourist attraction for visitors to the area.
Most local people support the idea but there have been some negative reactions
from people across the country who think it is completely inappropriate. But the
family are convinced that when it is completed people will love it. They hope they
are helping graffiti to be accepted as a valuable and respected art form.

A young man dreams of a career in music. He gets a chance to record two
albums, but they don’t sell. For many years, he lives on very little money. He has
no idea that in the meantime his songs have become extremely popular in other
countries, and that his fans believe he’s dead.
It sounds like the stuff that fairy tales are made of, but it isn’t. It’s an incredible
but true story and this is only the half of it.
Sixto Rodriguez was the son of Mexican immigrants to the US. He released his
first album, Cold Fact, in 1970, and his second, Coming from Reality, a year later.
But nobody bought his music, so he had to do all kinds of jobs to survive. Life was
hard for him and his family.
In the meantime, his music was becoming a huge success in three countries on
the other side of the world: Australia, New Zealand and, in particular, South
Africa. There, Rodriguez was a huge star, more popular than the Rolling Stones.
But there were rumours that he was dead, and he himself had no idea about the
success of his music.
Then, finally, in December 1994, 28 years after he released Cold Fact, a young
South African fan named Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew, a
journalist, wanted to find out more about Rodriguez. They started a website call
The Great Rodriguez Hunt, and had his face put on milk cartons in the US, with
the question ‘Have you seen this man?’. Rodriguez’s daughter saw one and the
rest is rock history.
In March 1998, he was invited on a big tour across South Africa. Rodriguez played
six concerts all over the country, in stadiums filled with thousands of young
people who knew every word to every one of his songs.
In 2012, Swedish film maker Malik Bendjelloul released the documentary film
Searching for Sugar Man. When the film got a nomination for an Oscar, the
director asked Rodriguez to come to the ceremony, but he refused because he
feared all the attention would be on him and not the film-makers. The film has
helped to make his music successful around the world, but Rodriguez has
remained very modest. He's been living in the same simple house in Detroit for
40 years, and he doesn’t have a car, a mobile phone or a TV.
1. Sixto Rodriguez’s parents were Mexican and he was born in Detroit, USA. _____
2. Lots of people knew his music in South Africa. _____
3. His daughter put a picture of him on milk cartons. _____
4. Twenty-eight years after Cold Fact, he played in front of thousands of fans in
South Africa. _____
5. Many people knew the lyrics of his songs. _____
6. The film about Rodriguez got a nomination for an Oscar, but it didn’t win. _____

I. Read the book review and do the task that follows.
One of my favorite books is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel written
by Mark Twain. Published in 1884, it’s set around 1840 in various locations along
the Mississippi River. The novel is written in the first person. Although it’s a kind
of adventure story, it follows the moral development of young man surviving
difficult circumstances.
The main character is the narrator, Huckleberry Finn. He’s a wild teenager from
an impoverished family that has abandoned him. He is adopted by a widow, who
does her best to turn Huckleberry into a respectable citizen. Although the hero of
the novel finds his new lifestyle unbearable, he puts up with it.
There is a turning point when Huckleberry’s aggressive father takes him away
from his new home. Huckleberry manages to escape from his father and sets off
on a journey of exploration down the Mississippi River. On his travels he meets
Jim, a man escaping from slavery. They share a lot of incredible adventures and
Huckleberry starts questioning the values of a society that treats fellow human
beings as inferior.
All in all, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an appealing story. And although
it is full of light-hearted moments and gripping action, the author also uses the
novel as a vehicle to expose the stupidity of prejudice. This makes it an
entertaining and thought-provoking story that I would thoroughly recommend to
anyone who is a fan of the classics.
Underline the detail in the text which is used to:
1. talk about the book’s message

The Old Man and the Sea
a book review by Mai Nguyen
1 The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel by the famous American writer
Ernest Hemingway. He wrote it in 1951 when he was 52 years old and it is one
of his best-known works. Three years later, Hemingway received the
1
coveted Nobel Prize in Literature.
2 It’s the story of an old fisherman called Santiago. After 84 days without
catching a fish, he is hungry, 2impoverished and alone. The other villagers
avoid him because they think his 3disastrous luck might make them unlucky
too. Finally, his luck changes and he hooks a 4huge marlin. After a long and
5
exhausting struggle, he eventually manages to bring it on board his boat.
But his troubles are not over. During a 6terrifying attack, sharks try to steal
his catch. He succeeds in fighting off the attackers. However, they eat the
marlin, leaving him only the fish’s skeleton. In the end, he loses the marlin but
regains his pride and his friends.
3 I liked the book because the story is 7fascinating. I admired the character of
Santiago because he showed a lot of courage and perseverance. The moral of
the story is thought-provoking and the style of writing is simple and poetic. I
would definitely recommend it to you.

Britart
1 Young British Artists (or Britart) are a group of conceptual artists, painters,
photographers and sculptors based in London who became famous in the
1990s for their ‘shock tactics’ - their use of strange materials and unusual
subject matter.
2 Their first exhibition, called Freeze, was organized in 1988 by Damien Hirst, a
leading member of Britart who at that time was still a student at art college.
The exhibition was seen by a keen art collector, Charles Saachi, who bought
one of Hirst’s earliest installations: a glass case containing real flies and
maggots feeding off a rotting cow’s head. Saachi became an important
supporter of Britart.
3 In 1997, a major exhibition called Sensation, held in the Royal Academy in
London and seen by over 300,000 people, brought Britart to the attention of a
wide audience. Damien Hirst exhibited a dead shark floating in a tank. Tracey
Emin, another famous artist, exhibited a tent which she had decorated with the
names of all the boyfriends she’d ever had. (Her most famous work, though, is
My Bed, which is actually her real-life, and rather messy, bed standing in the
middle of an art gallery.) Although the exhibition was a huge success, there
were many public complaints in the media, as a lot of the artwork was
considered offensive or in bad taste.
4 Since then, Britart has continued to dominate the British art scene, and it has
provoked endless ‘Is this art?’ discussions. People still can’t agree, and
although the artists have their supporters, they still receive a lot of criticism.
However, their exhibitions are always well attended. It will be interesting to see
how long they can continue to challenge our ideas of what art really is. Or will it
all start to look normal?

How to start you own band
A lot of readers have been asking me for advice about how to put a band
together, so I thought it was time to write a post about my experience. Every
band has a different story, but hopefully some of the stuff below will be useful to
you.
First, you’ve got to choose your band members. 1 __________ I was at college with
a great bunch of musicians, so I didn’t have to look far. You might not be so
lucky, but there are all sorts of other ways to find members. In fact, finding
musicians isn’t as hard as you think, as a lot of people want to be in a band. You
can place ads in local colleges, music shops, or even the local press if you’re
willing to pay. Or just ask around - friends, friends of friends. Do make it clear
which musicians you’re looking for though, so that you don’t waste people’s time.
Drummers are always the hardest to find!
It's important that you play the music that feels right to you. Don’t just go for
what’s popular at the time - you need to play what you love. Your favourite bands
and their styles will obviously be an influence on you, and that’s fine. However,
you need to do something a bit different. Don’t just copy them. Mix and match
until you find a sound you all like. 2 __________
You don’t have to write your own songs. Some bands just play other people’s
songs all the time, and are quite happy with that. 3 __________ Not everyone has
the musical talent for this, but if one or more of you in the group do, you’re in
luck. Maybe one of you has a tune they created. Any of you can suggest ideas,
and you can all use this as a base to build on. Keep it simple at first, and you’ll
get there eventually.
Finding a good place to practise is essential. There has to be enough space for
the band and all the gear, plus it has to be somewhere where the noise won’t
bother other people too much. A garage can be good, as long as there isn’t a car
in it. Some towns and villages have community rooms that you can use. 4
__________ Take your time to have a look around. You’ll find somewhere
eventually.
When you’re good enough, you’ll want to promote your band and start looking for
gigs. Setting up a website is easy nowadays, and you can do it for free. 5
__________ This will cost you, as you will need to book time in a studio. Get your
songs as near perfect as possible beforehand, because studio time is expensive.
Three or four should be fine - then upload them to your website so people can
hear what you’ve got.
When you get your first gig, try to produce some promotional stuff - T-shirts,
badges, that kind of thing. They get your name ‘out there’, and most bands make
more money doing that than from playing live at the beginning. Work hard,
practise and keep writing new songs. Play at local venues and get to know other
bands in your area - all contacts are good contacts. 6 __________ Whether or not
you ever make the big time, being in a band is an experience worth having that
you’ll remember all your life.
Task 1. Six sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from
sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra
sentence which you do not need to use.
A. That way you’ll develop your own sound.
B. You can usually hire these by the hour.
C. Above all, enjoy yourself.
D. Apart from that, motivation is the most important thing.
E. The main thing to do, however, is to record a demo.
F. But if you want to make it big, you need your own material.
G. For me, that was the easy part.
Task 2. Read the text again, and decide whether the sentences are true
(T), false (F) or not mentioned (NM).
1. It is difficult to find people to play in your band. __________
2. It’s OK to be influenced by other bands’ styles. __________
3. The best songs are usually created by the whole band. ______
4. You may have to pay for a room to practise in. __________
5. The best way to make money is to play concerts. __________
6. It’s good to use studio time to practise your songs. __________
7. Make friends with people doing the same sort of thing as you.
XXXI. Read the email, and decide whether the statements are true (T) or
false (F).
Dear Nick,
Hi! I hope you’re well. I’ve been really busy preparing an exhibition with some
other students from Art College. It’s going to be a mixture of photographs,
paintings and drawings connected to the theme ‘Changing Britain’. I’m
contributing some photos of Peter. It was difficult to take them - he hates having
his photos taken!
As you probably know, Peter has found a flat and moved out of our house.
Actually, I really enjoyed having him here, and I miss him. But I don’t think James
- Peter’s uncle - would have been very pleased if he’d stayed here much longer.
Anyway, Peter is now sharing a flat with two friends - Tom and Susan. Has he told
you about Susan? He met her on a train to Edinburgh, and then bumped into her
again in the Princes Street Gardens at dusk. How romantic! If he hadn’t spilt her
coffee on the train, she probably wouldn’t have remembered him. Now they’re
really close friends - or maybe more than friends.
I hope work is going better and you aren’t feeling so tired. What you need is a
holiday in England.
Love
David
1. David has painted some pictures for an exhibition. ___
2. James is pleased that Peter has found a flat. _________
3. There are three people living in Peter’s new flat. _____
4. David wants to know how Peter and Susan met. ______
5. Peter might be having a relationship with Susan. _____
XXXII. Read the text. Five sentences have been removed from the text.
Choose from sentences A-F the one that best fits each gap. There is one
sentence that you do not need.
A. Initially, the public was allowed to walk over this sea of seeds and pick them
up.
B. The title of the installation by China’s most famous living artist, Ai Weiwei, is
Sunflower Seeds.
C. According to the artist, the sunflowers mean more than one thing in Chinese
culture.
D. Now, visitors are only allowed to view the installations from the sides of the
gallery.
E. The exhibition has not been well received by the public.
F. However, the amazing thing is that the seeds are not what they seem.
The huge gallery called the Turbine Hall at London’s Tate Modem Art Museum is
home to a new installation for the next few months. It looks as if the entire floor
of the gallery has been covered with small grey pebbles, turning it into a vast
beach. But they are not pebbles. 1 __________ And that is precisely what is there. A
hundred million sunflower seeds have been spread out over the floor of this vast,
industrial space. That in itself does not sound particularly artistic. 2 __________
Each seed was actually hand-made from porcelain by Chinese craftsmen and
women. Sixteen hundred artisans, working every day for two and a half years,
produced all these millions of tiny, unique works of art. Some of the artisans
struggled to understand what they were making, but they were paid more than
their usual daily wage and are now asking Ai Weiwei if they can be involved in his
next project.
3
__________ Not only are the seeds a common Chinese street snack, but they also
represent the Chinese people. During the time of the Cultural Revolution,
President Mao called his people ‘sunflowers, always turning their faces to follow
the sun’. The sun, of course, was the President Mao himself.
Unfortunately, a problem has arisen with this latest installation. 4 __________
However, it soon became apparent that this created a fine dust, which could be
dangerous if people breathed in too much of it. 5__________ Nonetheless, it is still
impressive, and the gallery is expecting thousands of curious visitors.
