Day2 - Slides - Input For Paper and Presentations
• Do not just present your country! Develop and answer a research question!
• Corporate Governance is affected may variety of factors! Have a look at
yesterday’s slides and group work again!
• Start your paper with a research question, such as is “your country” closer to an
insider or outsider-system of corporate governance? And/or did “your countries”
system of corporate governance undergo significant changes?
• Next, for example, you could distinguish between insider and outsider system of
corporate governance to built up a benchmark (criteria) for your analysis.
• Then, you could examine whether the country meets (or met) the criteria of one of
those systems and maybe develops towards another system nowadays? Have
there been events (such as corporate scandals or political changes) that
triggered reforms that might affect the corporate governance system (and its
classification as an insider or outsider-system)?
• As a criteria, you may also consider quantitative measurement approaches for
corporate governance characteristics (e.g. those developed by the World Bank)
and use them for over-time and cross-country comparisons! Have a look at the
useful-websites document!
Some ideas for your seminar paper: Structure
• When structuring your outline and writing your paper, always discuss more
general issues first before moving on to specific issues!
• Provide definitions, theory, and the methodological approach to address your
research question after the introduction! E.g., discuss and/or define the purpose
of corporate governance, the principal agency theory, the insider and outsider
system of corporate governance first before examining which system is closer to
the governance system in “your country!.
• Again, you need to define a “benchmark” or “criteria” to answer your research
question.
• After you developed your methodological approach, provide the institutional
background and discuss prior research, data, and your own findings on “your”
country!
• If you decide to examine quantitative data, briefly introduce into the quantitative
measurement concepts first before applying them. Keep in mind that absolute
values do not tell much without any comparisons!
• Keep in mind, that the purpose of all of this, is to answer your research question!
Some more hints for your seminar paper:
Motivations, focus and setting priorities
• Follow the formal guidelines (separate presentation) and show good research
ethics
• Google, Wikipedia, Chat GPT might be not a proper source in a scientific paper.
However, these websites and others are a good starting point for getting a first
overview!
• Try to use scientific literature, at best from peer-reviewed journals!
• To get an overview about scientific journals, have a look at journal rankings
• E.g. in Germany, Jourqual is popular: Full list: https://vhbonline.org/vhb4you/vhb-
jourqual/vhb-jourqual-3/gesamtliste ; just Accounting and finance journals:
https://vhbonline.org/fileadmin/user_upload/JQ3_RECH.pdf ;
https://vhbonline.org/fileadmin/user_upload/JQ3_BAFI.pdf )
• Internationally, for instance, FT 50 is popular: https://www.ft.com/content/3405a512-5cbb-
11e1-8f1f-00144feabdc0
• However, there are more rankings, such as:
https://www.scimagojr.com/journalrank.php?category=1402
• Avoid relying on “unreliable” sources! There are journals that, basically, publish
everything if the authors pay for it!
• With respect to empirical findings, also the mentioned statistics by the World
Bank as well as those of Transparency International, IMF etc. could be helpful!
Some hints for your group presentations
• Most principles discussed for the papers also apply for the presentations!
• However, keep in mind that some definitions, theories, concepts (such as the
distinction between in- and outsider systems of corporate governance) will be
similar in all presentations. Therefore, be a bit brief on those issues and spend
more time on “your” countries” and answering your research question(s)!
• Do not “overload” your slides with too much text! There are also textbooks on
how to deliver a (good) presentation in the library!
• Try to involve the audience ,e.g. by asking questions, consider yourself as a
teacher/lecturer!
• Consider that the presentation is teamwork! I would suggest a “trial
presentation” before you deliver your presentation in class; at least once! Assist
“weaker” members in drafting slides and give helpful feedback after trial
presentation(s)! Again, it`s teamwork!
Questions?
Questions?
• There will be two meetings between each of the participants and myself, one
(brainstorming like) meeting for discussing the general approach to your
topic/paper (tomorrow) and another one on your progress (the day after
tomorrow)
• Monday afternoon next week, I will also offer a (group) meeting to discuss your
first draft of your presentation slides
• In between, I am available for 1:1-meetings discussing the detailed outline or the
content of your seminar paper assignment.
• However, it is your paper/presentation!
