THE CONCEPT OF LITERACY

DEFINITION OF LITERACY

The origins of literacy comes from the latin word, littera, meaning letters. Literacy is the
ability to comprehend those letters either through reading, writing and numeracy competencies of
students. According to the National Statistics Office, there are two kinds of literacy: basic and
functional. Basic literacy means the ability to read and write a simple message. Functional literacy
refers to the ability to solve problems, to be creative and critical and to maximize one’s potential
to the very best of their abilities. However, illiteracy refers to the inability of individuals who
cannot neither or write.

Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using
printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. (Montoya, 2018) Other types of
literacy include digital literacy, financial literacy, media literacy, health literacy, civic/social literacy
and legal literacy.

Digital Literacy is must as everyone uses smartphones and apps alongside it. Financial literacy
pertains to the ability of the individual to earn, save, invest and manage their own income for
their own gains. This can be vital to communities with little to no knowledge of the modern

Media literacy refers to the ability to distinguish reliable information from dubious ones. Under
media can also be historical literacy as the proliferation of dubious and unreliable false
information makes its way to the market/public unimpeded, people have to have the ability of
distinguishing fact from fake.

one’s identity and place in society for the better.
Legal literacy refers to the understanding of the law, the constitution and ability to obey them.
To be knowledgeable about the law is a right, yet only a few have the skill to understand and

In today’s digital world, one type of literacy might resound more to you than others, digital
literacy. According to UNESO, they define digital literacy as the “ability to access, manage,
understand, integrate, communicate, evaluate and create information safely and appropriately
through digital technologies for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.”

If this is the case, what would then be the use of other literacies? Can u illustrate your
understanding of literacy by making a concept map about it? With literacy at the center, what
other types and show how it branches out. Do they connect well with the world around us?
