Digital Eyewitness® ION / ION Eclipse

Installation Instructions
These instructions have been organized to allow you to quickly access the information you need to
install your Digital Eyewitness® ION / ION Eclipse system. Abbreviated step-by-step procedures are
presented in the left column of each page to allow you to quickly determine what is needed for a
particular component. Detailed information for each procedure is presented in the right column to fill in
the detail when needed.

We encourage you to read through the detailed instructions at least once - even if you've installed
Eyewitness® systems before. We continue to enhance the product, and have modified some of the
installation procedures presented in the past.

Instructions are included for all the configurations we offer, therefore there may be several pages that
don't apply to the particular system you are installing. Some options include their own installation
manuals.

Eyewitness® installations can be broken down into three main procedures:

1. Mount the Recording Unit.

2. Mount the Control Center, Camera, and Monitor in the passenger compartment.
3. Route and connect the cables.

Order of Installation
The order in which you install and connect the components is entirely up to you, with the following
important exceptions:

1. If the Camera is being mounted external to the Overhead Console, the Camera's mounting tab,
which glues to the windshield, must have at least two hours to dry before the Camera is attached.
Consider mounting this tab first.

2. The power cable must not be connected to the Recording Unit until all other components and
cables are installed and connected.

i
Protecting against RFI (Radio Frequency Interference)
As you install the system, please follow these guidelines to help eliminate interference:

1. All components should be mounted as far away from the 2-way radio (and its amplifier) as possible.

2. All cables should be routed as far away from the 2-way radio cables as possible.

3. The wireless microphone's antenna should be mounted as far away from the 2-way radio's antenna as
possible.

4. The power cable’s ground connections and shielding should be connected directly to the battery's
negative terminal. NOTE: Connect the Shield of the Power Cable to the Battery only if RFI is
present.

5. The Interface Box should be grounded properly to the car's chassis. Consider using a good braided
ground strap to accomplish this.

To help ensure against radio interference, you may want to consult with a radio technician.

Final Connections and System Check

Complete the attached Installation Checklist before replacing the molding, back seat, carpeting,
headliner, and anything else removed to route the cables. Once you confirm the system is working
properly, coil any excess cable and place it under the back seat.

Serial Numbers
Whenever service or technical assistance is required, be prepared to provide the system's Serial Number
to our customer service representative when you call (1-800-835-0156 or 1-620-431-2700). The Serial
Number Plate is located on the lower left side of the front cover of the Interface Box.

PROCEDURE DETAILS
STEP 1 Select and Mark Mounting Location. Make sure that your mounting location takes into
account:

1) Minimum obstruction of the driver’s field of view;

2) Optimum camera field of view out the front windshield;
3) Freedom from interference with airbag deployment; and

deployment, and/or possible injury to
occupants in the event of a collision. Refer to the drawing in Step 2 for proper tab positioning
before you mark the mounting location on the windshield.

If your vehicle does not have a passenger side airbag,

glue the mounting button 4" to 6" to the right of the rear
view mirror, and about 1/4" from the top of the windshield.
Be sure your location allows the camera to be turned
around to face the back seat if desired.

If your vehicle does have a passenger side airbag, obtain

a copy of the airbag deployment zone from the
manufacturer. Glue the mounting button in a location that
places the camera in a safe zone. Possible locations to
consider (subject to the airbag information) include below
the rear view mirror, to the left of the rear view mirror, and
at the far left side of the windshield. Mark location on
outside of windshield.

Acceptable video performance can be achieved with the

camera aimed through the solar/UV tint at the top of many
windshields. If your performance in this position is
unacceptable, consider scraping a small area of this tint
away with a razor blade.

portion of the seat may be helpful, but should not be
necessary.

Consider staggering the cable connectors and taping

them with electrical tape. This should help protect the
connectors and assist you in pushing the bundle into the
trunk. Use care when routing the cables to avoid
stressing the connectors. Pulling or tugging can damage
the connectors and cables.

After you finish installing the system, pull any excess

cable into the trunk, or under the seat and coil it.

STEP 3 Connect Cables. Refer to the wiring diagram, and the Power Cable and

Center to the Camera directly. Additional cameras route
to the Interface Box.

STEP 3b - Control Cable This cable is wired pin to pin; route the cable in either
direction. Ensure the 12 pin connector “snaps” and is

the radios, PA, etc.

The Brake tie-in should be accessible at the rear deck

Brake Light, or under the dash near the brake pedal.

The Emergency Lights tie-in should be accessible at

the switched side of the lights switch. If compatible, the
Siren tie-in should be accessible at the switched side of
the Siren switch. (System needs to "see" 12 volts or
ground, depending on jumper settings, when siren is
switched on.) If your siren does not offer a switched 12
volt or ground output, consider using the siren speaker
interface (see Siren Speaker Interface, p. 14).

STEP 3 Connect each Wire. Cut the wire to length and strip back enough insulation
to attach a connector. Use either a 3/16” ring terminal, a
male quick slide connector, or a t-splice to attach to the
switch connection.

STEP 4 Route and connect to the Interface Box. When attached properly to the Interface Box, the
cable’s red wire will be at the far right, the white wire at
the far left, and all wires will route downward (when
looking at the back of the Interface Box). These
connections do not need to be fused because they are
optically coupled to the rest of the system.

Siren Interface Options

The Siren can be used to activate the system’s Record mode either by direct control (Plus DC voltage or
DC Ground) via the Siren Controller’s panel switches or by using the “Siren Audio” at the Speaker
Terminals.

NOTE: Use “Siren Audio” if siren interface is desired rather than direct (Controller Panel) siren tie-in.
When the Siren Audio connection is used, any speaker use will activate the Record Mode.
Factory default is “Siren Audio”.

requirements:
A. There is nothing behind the surface that will be
damaged by drilling the mounting and clearance holes.
B. There is sufficient access to the underneath side to
allow routing the microphone cable to the Interface

C. There is solid material into which the mounting screws
can be threaded. (As an alternative to screws, either
double-sided adhesive tape, or hook and loop fasteners
may be used to mount the In-Car Microphone.)
D. There is adequate cable length to connect the
Microphone to the Interface Box.
Possible locations are the rear door post area, the
headliner, the rear deck, and the dash area (away from
airbag deployment areas). The preferred location is the
rear door post area, as this location minimizes road noise
and radio noise and maximizes sensitivity to rear-seat
conversations.
