OVERLAPS
In electrical circuits, the series & parallel connection are made using junction box,
twisted of cables, soldering, brazing etc.
This not possible in OHE Contact and Catenary Wire, so we use Overlaps.
1) An arrangement where two set of contact wire runs together in parallel for a
short distance without any mechanical or electrical connectivity.
2) Overlap is the method of joining of two tension lengths without affecting the
value of their individual tension length.

span length more than 54 m
2) 4 Span length Overlap required when radius of curvature less than 5000 m with
span less than 54 m.
TYPES OF OVERLAPS
The overlap where there is permanent electrical continuity between both the OHE. The
distance of separation between two contact wire is 200 mm and the two conductors are
permanently connected together electrically by suitable jumper.
Important points
UIOL is required when continuity of current flow is required between two conductors
whose length is limited.
60 | P a g e
INSULATED OVERLAPS (IOL)

OHE. This is used as sectioning arrangement.
The distance of separation between two contact wires is 500 mm.
S. No UIOL IOL
07 Bend Steady arm not req. Bend Steady arm req. in 4 span overlap to
maintain clearance at central location.
IMPORTANT POINTS
1) The gap between two conductors is decided by requiring the minimum air
clearance for 25 KV.
2) With this clearance it is possible to make one length dead keeping the other
energized by opening the switch normally connects to the lines.
The switch is either an Isolator or Interrupter.

CHAPTER – 28
The Equipment Installed to Provide 25000 Volt Supply to OHE is called Power Supply
Installation.
It mainly consists of TSS, FP, SP and SSP Switching Station.
Traction Sub Station means a Sub Station that Converts the Grid Supply Voltage 132 KV
to 25 KV AC to Supply Power to Traction Overhead Equipment Installed on the Railway
Track.
2) Take a Very High Voltage (such as 132 KV or 220 KV) from the Power Supply
Company in the Traction Sub Station and Stepped down to 25 KV with a Traction
Transformer and Give it to the OHE.
It is the Supply Post where the Incoming 25 KV Feeder Lines from Substation are
Terminated & Connected to OHE through CB and Interrupter.
25 KV Feeder means the Conductor or Feeder Line from the TSS to the Corresponding
Feeding Station & which is Connected to the unearthed terminal of the Traction
Transformer Secondary Winding.
Grid Substation means the Sub Station of a Power Supply authority which is Connected
to the Grid Network in the area & from which 132 KV Power is Supplied to the Railway
for Electric Traction.
73 | P a g e
SECTIONING & PARALLING POST (SP)

Section in Front of it.
2) The SP is placed between two TSSs, which is approximately 30 to 40 KM distance
from TSS.
3) It is the Supply Control Cost Situated midway of between Feeding Post and
Neutral Section; there are 04 Nos. Interrupter, 02 Nos. for Bridging & 02 Nos. for
Paralleling.

132/220 KV Solid Core Post Insulator is used to Support Aluminum Bus Bars with
Fixing Bolts, Nuts, Locknuts, Washer & Studs Etc. including Bus Bar Jumper, Clamps for
Clamping the Bus Bar & SPS.
Primary Winding take a Very High Voltage (such as 132KV or 220 KV) from the Power
Supply Company and with the Secondary Winding deliver it to the OHE by doing 25 KV
Step Down from the Power Transformer.
The distance between these Transformers between Two TSS varies from 60 to 80 KM.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER
This is a Step Down Transformer that reduces (Ratio) Current by Changing the
Maximum Current to a certain proof.
It is an important part of a Sub Station & It is always placed in the Series of the Circuit.
It is used to measure Telemetry and Current for Operating Protective Relay.
POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
This is a Step Down Transformer that reduces the Voltage to a Specified Amount.
It is an important part of a Sub Station & It is always applied in Parallel of the Circuit.
PT TYPE 1 - After giving 25000 Volt Supply in Primary, 100 V is obtained in Secondary
and it is used for Telemetry and Catenary Induction.
PT TYPE 2 - After giving 25000 Volt Supply in Primary gets 110 V in Secondary.
It is used to measure Protective Relay telemetry and voltage.
76 | P a g e
LIGHTENING ARRESTOR
The purpose of the Lightening Arrestor is to discharge the over voltage so that the
protection and circuit of the equipment of the Sub Station works smoothly.
The Earth Electrode fitted to the main Earthing Grid should be fitted with an
Independent Electrode for additional Lightening Arrestor.
Electrode is made from two different and different Connectors made of one 50 x 6 mm
for the 25 KV side Lightening Arrestor and 75 x 8 mm for the Lightening Arrestor on the
Primary of the Transformer, along with the Ground End of the Lightening Arrestor from
the main Earthing Grid. Combine the Earth Electrode as much as possible.
BURRIED RAIL
To make the Earthing Mechanism at the Traction Sub Station a Rail of 52Kg / m
approximately 13 meters Long is Buried near the Rail Path at about 1 meter depth with
75 x 8 mm GI Flat with Earthing Grid and Buried Rail.
Combine Impedances in a Single Rail Track Circuit area by two different and different GI
Flats of 75 x 8 mm at the Neutral Point of Bond where a Separate FP is made, where one
end of the Power Transformer is Buried.
