Resolution of a Discrete Time Signal into Impulses

❖ R.H.S of the equation is the summation of an infinite number of

scaled unit sample sequences where the unit sample sequence
𝛿 𝑛 − 𝑘 has an amplitude value of x(k). Thus the R.H.S gives the
resolution or decomposition of any arbitrary signal x(n) into a
weighted sum of shifted unit sample sequences.

𝑥𝑘 𝑛 = 𝛿(𝑛 − 𝑘).

Interconnections
Cascaded Interconnection:

❖ The order in which the operations of two systems are

performed is important.
❖ If both systems are linear and time-invariant,
then
𝒉 𝒏 = 𝒉𝟏 𝒏 ∗ 𝒉𝟐 𝒏 = 𝒉𝟐 𝒏 ∗ 𝒉𝟏 𝒏

Recursive Systems
A system whose output y(n) at time n depends on any number of past output
values [y(n-1), y(n-2),…….] is called a recursive system.

F[y(n), y(n-1),…..y(n-N),x(n),……x(n-M)
Z-1

Non-recursive Systems
A system whose output y(n) at time n depends only on any number of
input values [x(n), x(n-1)…..] is called a non-recursive system.

F[x(n),……x(n-M)]

System with finite duration and infinite
duration impulse response

Linear Time-invariant systems can be divided into two types:

1. Finite duration impulse response (FIR):
In terms of the impulse response those LTI systems are considered in this sub division who
have a finite duration impulse response.
Example: ℎ 𝑛 = 0 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑛 < 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛 ≥ 𝑀
The convolution formula for such a system is reduced to
𝑀−1

𝑦 𝑛 = ෍ 𝑥 𝑘 ℎ(𝑛 − 𝑘)
𝑘=0

2. Infinite duration impulse response (IIR):

Those that have an infinite duration impulse response

𝑦 𝑛 = ෍ 𝑥 𝑘 ℎ(𝑛 − 𝑘)
𝑘=0
