Kin Prob Set (2024) Indiana Jones
1. Joe is driving down a street at a speed of 24 m/s when an old woman walks out in front of his car. Joe hits the breaks when
he is 25 m from the old woman and his car slows at a rate 4.50 m/s2, but will not stop in time. The old woman has cat like
reflexes and can leap over the car as long as she notices it 0.35 seconds before it reaches her. If she is to escape, at what
minimum distance must she see the approaching car.
2. A train is travelling 61.2 m/s when the engineer sees a stopped train in the tracks ahead. He immediately hits the breaks and
starts slowing the train down at a rate of 2.2 m/s2. The engineer in the stopped train sees the speeding train approaching and
at the same moment begins accelerating away from it at a rate of 1.2 m/s 2. It is close, but the closest the two trains get to each
other is 12 m. How far apart were the two trains when the engineers first saw each other?
3. Mr. Fraser was in a race with Usain Bolt. They raced to a stop sign down the street from where they started. Because Fraser
can accelerate at a rate 25% greater than Bolt he gave bolt a 2.00 second head start. They each started from rest and
accelerated uniformly for the whole race. If they tied the race, how long did the race take? [7 marks]
4. In an attempt to save the world, Batman and Robin are trying to retrieve an explosive placed at the bottom of a dam. Batman
is on top of the dam with a powerful catapult that will send the explosive into outer space. Robin is 100.0 m below with the
explosive. He throws the explosive upward with a velocity of 40.0 m/s for Batman to catch. Because Robin is not a real
superhero the explosive will not reach Batman. Batman (whose superhero status is also questionable… I mean what is his
super power anyway?) ties a 42 m length of rope to his waist and jumps from the dam 1.0 s after Robin throws the explosive.
How long will Batman freefall before he catches the explosive?
5. Mr. Fraser is standing on the roof of Macdonald C.I. on a snowy day. He sees an Agincourt student walking toward the
building and throws a snowball at him. The snowball hits the student with a velocity of 45.0 m/s at a downward angle of
75.0° to the horizontal. If the school was 7.00 m tall, how far from the base of the building was the student when he got hit?
(throwing snowballs is bad!)
5. Indiana Jones is fighting with a bad guy on a train that is travelling 12 m/s [N35° W]. He throws a priceless golden idol
straight up into the air with a speed of 18 m/s just as the train engineer applies the brakes. The train undergoes an
acceleration of 0.34 m/s2 [S35°E]. The idol falls down into the hands of his trusty side kick Mr. Fraser who is standing 4 m
higher than Jones on roof of the car in front.
a) What is the horizontal distance between Mr. Fraser and Indiana Jones?
b) What was the velocity of the idol relative to Mr. Fraser when he caught it?
7. A student needed Mr. Fraser’s help. Trying to be as helpful as possible, Mr. Fraser fired them out of his “students” cannon
(That’s right a have a cannon designed just for launching students) at an angle 35° above the horizontal. The student travelled
a horizontal distance of 40.0 m before slamming into a wall 10.00 m above the ground. If the cannon is at ground level, at
what angle to the horizontal will the student be travelling when they collide with the wall?
* Make sure to determine whether it will be above or below the horizontal.
