Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th edition by Stewart. ISBN: 978-1285741550. The eBook version is fine also! I will
NOT be using any of the online homework software, so a used or rented copy is perfectly okay.

Description:

MATH 163 is part three in a total calculus sequence, meant to prepare future mathematicians, scientists, engineers,
and others for courses and activities using calculus techniques. This class focuses on sequences and series, vectors,
functions of multiple variables, and topics using 3-dimensional coordinate systems. Many topics and methods in this
course will be brand new to students. As such, it is paramount that an appropriate amount of study be devoted to this
course! Pre-requisite is a 2.0 grade in MATH 151 (Calculus 1) and 152 (Calculus 2).

Goals:

At the end of this course, students will be prepared for Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and further math courses.
Students will be able to:

- Analyze sequences and series, and use Taylor series approximations to represent functions.

- Understand the meaning and the plethora of uses of vectors. Students will see how they work geometrically, how
vector functions are utilized, and understand specific applications.

- Think about functions more generally than in previous calculus classes. Students will work with functions of multiple
variables, understand partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and other analyses using multivariable equations.

Policies/Expectations:

- It is expected that you ask questions in this course! It is incredibly important that after our first meeting, you study
material ahead of time in order to know what to ask.
- Calculators are NOT allowed on any in-class assessment. However, it may be useful to have a graphing calculator or
use a web-based graphing utility (such as desmos.com) on homework and for study purposes.
- Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in any way. The penalty for cheating may range from a zero on the
assignment in question to a zero for the entire course.

- No make-ups are allowed on any assignments after the assigned date. If you have an unavoidable conflict with an
exam or quiz, if you let me know with at least two days notice, I will give you an opportunity to make up the
assignment.
Grading:

Class attendance is not mandatory, and is not part of the course grade.

Your course grade will be based on the following (numerical grades will be assigned evenly between whole numbers):

ASSIGNMENT (number) POINTS EACH Grade REQUIRED

POINTS
Exam (3) 100
4.0 450
Quiz (7) 20
3.0 400
Homework (3) 20
2.0 350

1.0 300

There will be eight quizzes throughout the quarter, but your lowest quiz score will be dropped. Quizzes will be on each
Monday, except the first quiz, and except after exams. The quizzes will take approximately 20 minutes, after a few
minutes of review at the beginning of class, and will cover material from the previous week. Homework will be
assigned throughout the quarter, but will only be due at each exam.

There may be curves or extra credit on certain assignments depending on class performance. I will never give an
individual student an extra credit opportunity that is not available to the entire class, so do not ask!

Exams:

There will be three exams and a cumulative final exam, with all questions being free response. Your lowest exam
score, including the final, will be dropped. There will be some sort of extra credit available on each exam. You will not
be allowed to leave the room during an exam. In addition, students will have an opportunity after each non-final exam
to correct problems missed on the exam for credit (amount dependent on exam grades)! It is highly suggested that all
students take advantage of this, to learn from mistakes made on the exams.

Exams will be held in-class on the days noted in the schedule. Exams must be written in pen (any color except red),
and no books, notes, formulas, or calculator are allowed. Paper will be provided for you. Students are REQUIRED TO
PRESENT PHOTO ID AT THE FIRST EXAM. Students are responsible for all material covered in lecture, homework
assignments, and textbook chapters. Exam grades may only be questioned or contested within one week of the exam,
and only in office hours.

Resources:

For academic assistance outside the course, Shoreline provides free tutoring and academic support through the Math
Learning Center for walk-in assistance at any time (http://www.shoreline.edu/math-learning-center/), and through
Tutoring Services for individual appointments (http://www.shoreline.edu/enrollment-services/learning-support-
centers/tutoring.aspx). All students, regardless of performance in class, are encouraged to use tutoring services.

Students with disabilities:

Students with physical or learning disabilities have the right to request and receive reasonable accommodations to
ensure access to programs and facilities at Shoreline Community College. To receive reasonable accommodations,
students are responsible for requesting accommodations and documenting the nature and extent of their disability in a
timely manner. Students should direct their requests for accommodation to the Office of Special Services and Services
for Students with Disabilities (FOSS 5226 or call 206.546.4545).
