CHAPTER ONE
1.0INTRODUCTION
1.1 THE STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME
(SIWES)
The SIWES program is coordinated through the ITF centers for each zone
depending on the location of the work place of the students. Program is organized
in all tertiary institutions, though period of training differs from one institution to
the other. The duration of SIWES also known as Industrial Training program
varies from one institution to another, it could be for a period of one four months
or six months regardless of the duration, it is a prerequisite exercise to be carried
out by students of all Nigerian tertiary institutions pursuing specialized courses
before graduation. In Polytechnics the students embark on four months of
industrial training program after the second semester of their Ordinary National
Diploma (O.N.D). This is mandatory and a determinant factor for admission into
the Higher National Diploma (H.N.D) program. In Universities, the duration of
SIWES ranges between six months and one year. In National Diploma, the
duration is four months.
SIWES carried out during the entire second semester of 200 level (two months).
The experience to be accumulated over period of SIWES are very significant in
preparing the students for life after school and also enables the school to produce
well- taught graduates who upon graduation are set for life challenges.
The scheme therefore is among the guidelines of the Nigerian Universities
Commission (N.U.C.) for the award of Bachelor s degree in Science/Technology
and Education for students in all tertiary institutions.
1.2 THE NEED FOR STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE
SCHEME
The need for students to embark on the Students Industrial Training Fund (SIWES)
arose from the Fed. Governments directive and higher institute policy on the
subject that ―all students in higher institutions of learning should necessarily
undergo a compulsory period of Industrial Training with a reputable, credible and
accredited organization/establishment in order to satisfy the higher institute
requirement for the award of NCE‖.
The SIWES serves as an avenue for students to relate theoretical knowledge with
practical experience.
1.3 BODIES INVOLVED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SIWES
The burden of the coordinated management of SIWES lies on two main bodies: the
Federal Government and Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Other Supervisory
Agencies are;-
National University Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education
(NBTE) & National Council for Colleges of Education (NCCE) The functions of
these agencies above include among others to:-
1. Ensure adequate funding of the scheme.
2. Establish SIWES and accredit SIWES unit in the approved institutions.
3. Formulate policies and guideline for participating bodies and institutions.
4. Appoint SIWES coordinators and supporting staff.
5. Supervise students at their places of attachment and sign their log-book and ITF
Forms.
6. Vet and process students’ log-books and forward same to ITF area office.
7. Ensure payment of Allowances for the students and supervisors.
Therefore the success or otherwise of the SIWES depends on the efficiency of the
Ministries, ITF, Institutions, Employers of labor and the general public involved
in articulation and management of the program. Thus, the evaluation of SIWES in
tertiary institutions in meeting up with the needs for the establishment of the
program is necessary.
1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
1.4.1 AIM OF SIWES
The aim of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is to expose
student to relevant practical experience and fill the gap existing between theory
and practice of engineering and technology, sciences, agriculture, management and
other professional courses in Nigerian institutions.
1.4.2 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES;-
1. To provide an avenue for students in Nigerian Universities to develop and
acquire practical industrial skills and experience in their courses of study.
2. To prepare students for the work situation that is likely to be met after
graduation.
3. To make the transition from university to the world of work easier and enhance
students contacts for later job placement.
4. To expose students to the work methods, means and techniques to handle, and
operate some equipment and machinery that may not be available in the
institutions.
5. To provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work
situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practices.
6. To enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire educational
process and prepare students for employment in Industry and Commerce.
7. To provide opportunity for interaction with professionals in their area of study.
8. To make students more relevant in their fields of study.
9. To ensure the realization of the above listed objectives, the SIWES job
specification standards were developed in 1996. These specifications are a
break-down of different disciplines into various tasks and task elements which will
serve as a major guide not only for students on industrial attachment but also for
employers of labor (Industrialists)
1.5 CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE SCHEME
Over the years, SIWES has made a great impact on the economic, social and
technological advancement of the country. Some of these obvious contributions
are;
1. The scheme has offered students in tertiary institutions an un comprisable
opportunity to interact with workers of various disciplines and possibly captains of
industries.
2. Improvement of the quality of skilled manpower in Nigeria.
3. Establishment of greater ties between institutions and industries.
4. Preparation of students for employment in the industries and other institutions.
5. Practical industrial experience now forms part of the requirements for the award
of certificated and degrees in specific disciplines
CHAPTER TWO
2.0 HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
2.1 Concept of ATC Digital Village
Digital village is a social entity concept formed by community awareness, and a
desire to think beyond and build a new form of cooperation and alliances using
advanced digital technologies [1]. It is not only incorporating digitalization into the
village, but also forming a social entity that can address the problems existing
within the village. The concept must be based on community awareness and look
for comprehensive solutions to all problems efficiently. The implementation could
even end up producing a new form of cooperation among residents.
From another perspective, it also exemplifies a new way of thinking for off-grid
communities worldwide. The concept provides solutions to the village residents.
However, when each digitalized village is connected to the others, all villages’
needs and solutions become connected to one another. One village’s abundance
will be a solution for the other villages that are lacking, and vice versa.
Digital village is a complex concept that has a lot of aims. One aim of the digital
village concept is to empower rural communities. This is conducted by
implementing digital technologies through the act of innovation in developing
cross-sectorial solutions that are sustainable, cost-effective, and affordable. Digital
village also aims to develop the concept of literacy culture. Culture stimulates new
communication patterns, new information and decision practices, new actions and
transactions model, and ends up achieving community culture prosperity.
Socially, the integrated concept of digital village reduces digital divides and
develops a culture of collaboration and participation between residents, including
immigrants, local authorities, and local industry. The concept is also used to
establish a network for attracting professionals and improving the digital skills of
residents. Several larger social outcomes, such as avoiding population drops,
anticipating generational changes, and shifting the balance of opportunities and
population distribution between villages and cities could also are answered by
implementing the concept.
The concept can be used to boost local development economically and revitalize
local economic potencies. This in turn can increase the income of rural residents,
provide a basis for economic self-reliance, and stimulate the financial
independence of rural residents. One specific area of the concept’s implementation
is bridging the gap between the digital developer and actual service
commercialization. By bridging the two parties, it could result in a growth in the
number of businesses.

3.1 INTRODUCTIION TO COMPUTER
A computer system is micro, a mainframe or super computer consist of both
hardware and software. It is an electronic machine capable of accepting data,
process the data into meaningful information as output. A computer is a machine
or tool, which is capable of
i. Taking input data
ii. Storing the input data.
iii. Processing the input data
iv. Producing the output report on paper or computer store for human being to
use.
The term computer is obtaining from the word compute. A computer is an
electronics device that inputs (take in) facts (known as data) and then processes
(does something to or with it). Afterward
to or with it). Afterward
INTRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
In simple language, information technology (I.T) is the overall technical where
withal required for an efficient gathering, storage, processing utilizing computers,
the internet and other electronic tools like camcorders, mobile or cell phone etc.
Excel Formulas
At this point, you’re getting used to Excel’s interface and flying through
quick commands on your spreadsheets.
Now, let’s dig into the core use case for the software: Excel formulas.
Excel can help you do simple arithmetic like adding, subtracting,
multiplying, or dividing any data.
To add, use the + sign.
To subtract, use the - sign.
To multiply, use the * sign.
To divide, use the / sign.
To use exponents, use the ^ sign.
Remember, all formulas in Excel must begin with an equal sign (=). Use
parentheses to make sure certain calculations happen first. For example,
consider how =10+10*10 is different from =(10+10)*10.
Now that you know what PowerPoint is and how it came to be a force in
the Microsoft-era, it’s time to go through the uses of this powerful
software. This will be especially useful for you if you’re ever tasked to
create a PowerPoint project
This frees up the lecturer’s time as writing down stuff on the board can
take quite a while which leads to students losing interest in the lecture.
2. Use PowerPoint to make tutorial slideshows and videos
People love visual tutorials because they can easily understand how
something is done or made. They don’t have to read through 10 pages of
text to understand something. Instead, they can easily digest the
information they need in just a few slides.
Simply follow the onscreen instructions, and you’ll have your recording
in no time at all.
You don’t have to record your entire screen. You just select a particular
area you want to record. Any activity within that area gets recorded until
you hit the Stop button.
You can choose to record your voiceover while you do your screen
recording (this is great if you aren’t presenting live). Otherwise, you can
choose to put the microphone on mute and give your verbal walkthrough
in a live presentation.
You have the option to record your mouse pointer. Turning on this
option is great if you’re not presenting live because it helps your
audience understand what you’re doing on your computer. If you’re
presenting live, you can use a laser pointer to help point people’s
attention to the right places.
Moreover, if you want better video editing control, you can use
PowerPoint add-ins from third-party software like Camtasia.
This may sound surprising to some, but it’s really quite simple to make
info graphics on PowerPoint! If you want to see what’s possible, check
out some awesome info graphic PowerPoint examples or templates that
you can download on Hubs pot.
As I’ve mentioned earlier in this article, PowerPoint is very versatile
presentation software. You don’t have to use Photoshop, Canvas, or any
other graphics software to create info graphics.
No matter the size, however, you can easily change PowerPoint slide
dimensions or slide sizes.
All you have to do is go to Design > Slide Size > Custom Slide
Size. You can then set the Width and Height for your info graphic.
The more valuable your content, the more people will appreciate you
and your hard work.
PowerPoint may seem like software strictly for business, but did you
know you can also use it for pleasure?
For instance, if you’ve recently been away on vacation, and you’ve
taken a thousand pictures of things you want your family and friends to
see, then you can easily use PowerPoint to create a photo slideshow.
Of course, you don’t want to bore your friends with your selfies, so
make sure you pick only the very best photos of your vacation.
Who knows, it may even lead to photography work for you if people
find you take high-quality and emotionally-charged photos!
Some may say you don’t need PowerPoint to create slideshows. These
days you can even use your smartphone and hook it up to a laptop or
projector. You can then play all the images on your phone if you want.
Some mobile phone apps include music to play along with your
slideshow. You also don’t need to worry about adding transitions
manually.
How to turn your PowerPoint pictures into a slideshow
You can control how you want your slideshow to look like. Use
transitions and animations wisely though. Don’t go crazy on them as it
could be a huge turn off for your viewers (you don’t want them to get
migraines after watching your slideshow)!
3.4 HOW TO PRINT A DOCUMENT
Make sure your printer is updated, connected, and turned on. It must be added to
your computer's devices.
On Windows, open the document. Press "Ctrl" + "P" to open the print menu.
Adjust the settings, and then click "Print"
Make sure that your printer is connected and turned on. If your
printer connects over Wi-Fi, this will mean making sure that you're on the same
Internet network as your printer; otherwise, you'll need to plug your printer's USB
cable into your computer.
1.
3.7 Formatting
Formatting a drive will delete all of the data on it and create a new file system.
You'll need to format a drive in order to install Windows on it, or to start using it if
you're installing an extra drive. You can format a drive to quickly erase all of the
data on it. You can also shrink existing drives and format the remaining free space
to create a second drive on your computer. If you are disposing your computer, you
can use special tools to securely erase all of your data.
1. Backup any important data. Formatting your drive will delete all of the data
on it and remove the operating system. Make sure that you have any important
files backed up to another location, such as an external drive or the cloud.
If you're trying to securely erase the data on a drive before disposing of it, see
the Securely Formatting a Drive section of this article instead.
2. Insert your Windows installation disc. You'll be using your Windows
installation disc to format your drive. This is the easiest way to format the
primary drive, as you cannot do this from within Windows itself. You don't
need to use your own installation disc, as you won't actually be entering a
product key (unless you proceed with reinstalling Windows). If you can't find
your installation disc, you may still have options depending on your version of
Windows:
Windows 7 - You can download an ISO file for Windows 7 be entering your
product key here. You'll then be transferring this ISO file to a blank DVD or
USB drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool which you can
download here.
Windows 8 - You can download the Windows 8 Media Creation tool from
Microsoft here. This program will download and create Windows installation
media on either a blank DVD or USB drive (4GB or larger). Run the tool and
follow the prompts to create the installation media.
Windows 10 - You can download the Windows 10 Media Creation tool from
Microsoft here. Run this program to download and create your Windows 10
installation disk on either a blank DVD or USB drive. Most users should
download the 64-bit version of the tool. If you aren't sure, see How to Check if
Windows is 32-Bits or 64-Bits.
3. Set your computer to boot from the installation drive. In order to run the
installer and format the drive, you'll need to set your computer to boot from that
drive (DVD or USB) instead of your hard drive. The process for this varies
depending on whether your computer came with Windows 7 (or older), or if
your computer came with Windows 8 (or newer).
Windows 7 (and older) - Reboot your computer and press the BIOS, SETUP, or
BOOT key that is displayed when the computer first starts. The most common
keys are F2 , F11 , F12 , and Del . In the BOOT menu, set your installation
drive as the primary boot device.
Windows 8 (and newer) - Click the Power button in the Start screen or menu.
Hold ⇧ Shift and click Restart to reboot into the "Advanced startup" menu.
Select the "Troubleshoot" option and then "Advanced options". Click "UEFI
Firmware Settings" and then open the BOOT menu. Set your installation drive
as the primary boot device.
4. Start the setup process. Windows will load the setup files and then start
the installation process. You'll be asked to select your language and accept
the terms before you proceed.
5. Select a "Custom" installation. This will allow you to format your hard
drive during the installation.
6. Select the partition you want to format. After proceeding through the
initial installation screens, you'll be shown all of the hard drives and their
partitions. You will typically have several partitions on your computer, one
for your operating system, one recovery partition, and any additional
partitions you may have created or drives you may have installed.
You can delete partitions on the same drive to combine them all into a single
unallocated partition. This will delete any data on the partitions. Click the
"Drive options" button to see the "Delete" option for partitions.
If you delete all of your partitions, you'll need to create a new one before it can
be formatted. Select the unallocated space and click "New" to create a new
partition. You'll be able to set the size of the partition out of the available free
space. Note that you typically cannot create more than four partitions on a
single drive.
7. Format the selected partition. Click the "Format" button after selecting
the partition or drive. If you don't see the Format button, click the "Drive
options" button to reveal it. You will be warned that the format process will
delete all data on the partition. Once you agree, the format will happen
automatically. This may take a few moments to complete
8. Install your operating system. Formatting your primary removes the operating
system, so you won't be able to use the PC until you install an operating system
again. You can proceed with the Windows installation after formatting the
drive, or you can install a different operating system such as Linux. To install
Windows, follow the rest of the prompts in the setup program after formatting.
To install Linux, you'll need Linux installation media. See How to Install
Linux for instructions on installing a variety of different Linux versions.
