T IPS TO PREPARE FOR JEE Main
Every year, lakhs of students appear for JEE and aspire to get into one of the premiere
institutes of the country, however, not everyone is able to secure a seat in the country’s top
institutes. The reasons could be many. But your chances of cracking the coveted
engineering entrance exam would go high if you have a plan in place as per the time. To
raise the probability of cracking JEE, here you go with some of the exam strategies you can
adopt to attain success in the test.

1. Prepare a Timetable and Start Early

A student keen to appear for JEE exam, should start early preparation, preferably from Class
XI onwards. Right from the beginning, a student should put in adequate effort to prepare for
the exam. Apart from an early start, the basics and fundamentals should be strong enough
to crack an easy or difficult question. A timetable should be prepared by the candidates for
JEE Main examination to gain the following benefits.

● Helps in Gaining an Extra Edge: A well-planned timetable will help in strategizing

your preparation in the right direction.

● Enhances Time Management Skills & Boosts Confidence:

○ In an interview with Careers360, JEE Main Topper Dhruv Arora, who scored
100 percentile mentioned that the preparation for JEE Main and board exams
are totally similar. There is no major difference other than JEE Main being
objective and the board exam being subjective. The syllabus and course are
all the same. NCERT books are more than enough for JEE Main. According
to me, no other books are required. My preparation was generally exam
based i.e., using the previous year exam papers to get an idea of what can be
asked and what I need to study.

○ JEE Main Topper Jayesh Singla, who scored 100 percentile score, also told
Careers360 that he focused mainly on studying regularly rather than making a
coercive attempt. He used to study at least 5-6 hours regularly after school
hours. He made a plan and a time table and followed it throughout the
duration of my JEE Main 2019 preparation. He solved mock tests and
previous year papers to get an extra edge in my JEE Main preparation.

● Aids in Dealing with Study Pressure: The most important thing is that you should
have a time schedule, which you should follow sincerely. A proper study schedule will
allow you to relax and this will ultimately lead to a reduction in exam pressure. It’s not
the quantity of time, but the quality of time spent on studies that matters. You should
divide this crucial time aptly into the three subjects and prepare a chapter-wise &
topic-wise revision schedule. Take short breaks of five to ten minutes between every
1-2 hours of serious study. Relax completely when you take a break.

● Helps in Focusing on Weak Areas: You should prepare your timetable in such a
way that you devote an ample amount of time to your weak areas or chapters, which
are a bit tricky or difficult for you to understand. If the weightage of weak areas is
more, then give ample time to overcome them so that these do not pose as a hurdle
in achieving overall goals.

2. Know about the Exam

Before one starts the preparation for the entrance test, it is essential to understand the
format of the exam, the type of questions that appear in the question paper, the level of
difficulty, the marking pattern, eligibility, syllabus etc. This will help the aspirants to have a
focused approach towards the exam.

3. Practise Sample Papers and learn Time Management

The time duration for the exam is three hours and with multiple choice questions and
negative marking, managing time and speed is very important, which will come over time
and with practice. To better your speed in terms of giving your best shot within the limited
time of 3 hours, practice more and more sample papers or previous years question papers to
have a grip on the type of questions that come in the actual exam. Practising the
sample/model papers will enable students to be quicker in solving the questions/problems
for the entrance test. This will further help in managing your time efficiently while you attempt
your question paper.

Benefits of Solving Previous Year Papers

● Improves Time Management Skills
● Checks Level of Preparation
● Builds Speed & Accuracy
● Enhances Question-Solving Skills
● Boosts Confidence

4. Track your Progress

You need to periodically solve mock test papers and monitor your progress. Doing this
exercise will help you identify your weak areas. It’s crucial that once you have been able to
identify your weak areas, you must invest more time and give more focus on your weak
areas. Tracking your progress will help you evolve as a better and more refined competitor
for the entrance test. Simultaneously, you must also concentrate on improving your speed
and accuracy.

5. Revise thoroughly and Take Breaks

Do not get complacent with your mock test results. Revise thoroughly and take short breaks
at regular intervals, re-energize yourself, and start again. Revision for the national level
engineering entrance exam should not be chapter-wise, rather it should be concept-wise. At
times, such questions are asked in the test in which multiple concepts are interlinked. If
students revise concept-wise, then the chances of inadvertently missing out on anything are
very less. The concept-wise preparation will automatically result in candidates’ quality of
attempts.

6. Relax and Meditate
While it would be a rigorous exercise to have some dedicated hours of preparation for the
entrance exam, you must engage in some recreational activities which would act as
stress-busters for you. Meditation, yoga, or any other form of relaxation technique as it suits
you would be helpful. Such techniques have a stress relieving effect and also help you have
a higher degree of concentration.

7. You may join Coaching Classes for Expert Guidance

Some of the aspiring students might be brilliant in their studies, however, due to a lack of
proper guidance and expert suggestions, they might end up far behind their desired
score/marks in the test. With cutthroat competition, enrolling in a coaching class can help a
student gain the desired guidance and master tricks to crack the competitive exam.
However, before joining a coaching class, students must analyze several factors like whether
an institute provides the right environment, adequate training, the right faculty, etc to crack
the exam or not.
