System function

The diesel engine drives a vacuum pump which in turn creates the vacuum 80 – 90% (negative pressure)
which is stored in the main body (230ltr tank) of the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter. The vacuum pressure is
released to the suction pad by means of a pulse being sent from a radio remote control to a receiver
(magnetic solenoid) situated on the main body. The pulse activates the solenoid valve which opens and
releases the Negative pressure stored in the main body to the suction pad. The EliTE vacuum pipe lifter
is equipped with warning lights and a dual functioning siren which indicates inadequate vacuum and
engine failure. Additionally a large pressure gauge mounted on the main unit and a second pressure
gauge mounted on the suction pad indicates to the operator the current vacuum level/ under pressure at
all times.

The EliTE vacuum pipe lifter can be equipped with a hydraulic rotator or crane eye or both. This
combination allows for maximum efficiency, speed and safety in deploying pipe. A crane eye is delivered
as a standard part of the equipment.
7 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

General safety

The EliTE vacuum pipe lifter can only be used when the operator’s manual has been completely read
and fully understood. A training programme is supplied by the manufacturer for safety reasons. If a
customer does not wish for a safety training programme which is carried out by the manufacturer, all
claims regarding warrantee, guarantee or damage to property or human life are invalid.

8 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

“AoD” = Anti object Drop. State of the art technology!

Note: the illustration of your AoD may differ from model
to model however the function and instructions remain
the same!

The AoD is a specially designed mechanism to reduce the risk of

dropping pipes/ objects during a lifting procedure.

The AoD WILL prevent the operator from mistakably releasing a

pipe during a pipe lift. Our remote controls and pendant controls are
setup with diagonal command buttons as a safety precaution,
additionally the AoD give the absolute security that this safety
precaution is excelled to its maximum.

The AoD is situated at 1 single point of the main unit.

When the load (pipe or other) is lifted from the ground, the weight mechanically
deactivates the radio or pendant remote control via a signal.
For safety reasons, the AoD weight/ sensitivity is set to react very low at the
suction pad weight without pipe.

The connecting point hangs naturally (suction pad/ or without the suction pad) in a neutral position. In
this position, it is not possible to activate the command vacuum release via the red buttons on the
RRC or CRC (Radio remote control/ Cable remote control (Pendant).

The AoD is only deactivated once a pipe/ object is/ are set safely and firmly on a surface.

Warning: Under no circumstances is it permitted to operate the ELiTE vacuum pipe lifter with
a none active/ functional AoD (if equipped)

For safety reasons, the RRC will only operate when two commands (Suction release/ suction
activate are pressed at the same time).

Starting the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter

Engine

1. Open the fuel tap lever to the engine

2. Engine start Lever (black) to the start position (illustration on next page).
3. Turn the key clockwise to start position until the engine runs. As long as the engine is not
running but the ignition is on, you will hear the engine siren and observe 2 red flashing
lights. This is normal and a safety feature for engine failure.
4. Release the key once the engine has started (Engine siren and red flashing light will not
distinguish.
5. If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, wait 15 seconds and start again.

The engine is running

1. The vacuum pump is now running free

2. Switch OFF the AoD at the cabinet
3. Activate the RRC (Radio remote control) and press the suction buttons (marked “release” or
coloured “red”).
4. The vacuum pump will now begin to build up pressure in the reservoir tank. As long as the
vacuum is below -0.65bar you will hear a siren and observe 2 yellow flashing lights. This
is normal and safety feature indicating inadequate vacuum pressure. Once the vacuum
pressure has risen above – 0.65bar – 0,85bar the siren and lights will distinguish.
5. Now switch the AoD ON! (This will be your AoD functional test check)
6. The unit is now ready for the first of 2 vacuum tests which MUST be carried out prior to
lifting.

Ideal working vacuum pressure should read between = -0.65 to -

0.9bar
RED LIGHTS AND SIREN = ENGINE FAILURE
YELLOW LIGHTS AND SIREN = INADEQUATE VACUUM PRESSURE

In both cases = do not lift!

Start the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter as previously described.

1. Once the engine is running, switch the AoD to the OFF position
2. Activate the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter to produce vacuum (red buttons), your vacuum pressure
should read between - 0.65 and – 0.9bar with all alarms off.
3. Close the vacuum lever 2/3 way valve (on top of the unit). This will lock the vacuum within the
reservoir, splitting it from the suction pad.
4. Switch off the diesel engine (Red lever)
5. Switch off the RRC (radio remote control) and engine ignition.

The vacuum pressure showing on the pressure gauge (fitted on the main unit) should not drop more
than:
10% in 10 minutes

If the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter loses more than 10% vacuum in 10 minutes you have a pressure
leak in the system.

Call a mechanic – Component checks = hoses, valves, fittings - rectify the leak – repeat the
vacuum test 1

Once the vacuum test 1 is successful, return the 2/3 way valve to its original position,
return the AoD switch to the “ON” position and proceed with vacuum test 2
24 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

Vacuum test 2 before working with the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter.
CHECKING THE VACUUM EFFICIENCY OF FITTINGS, SUCTION PAD AND SEALING ON THE
SUCTION PAD

It is absolutely necessary and you MUST carry out the vacuum test 1 and 2 before you work
with the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter, this is the only method of ensuring that your equipment is
safe to work with.

“Assuming your equipment is safe to work with is not enough”!!

1. Start the engine as previously described.

2. Initiate vacuum suction coloured button (“red”).The vacuum will regenerate and the vacuum
siren/ lights will distinguish once the vacuum is above - 0.65bar.
3. Position the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter on top of a pipe (not stacked)!!!
4. Apply suction by initiating the green buttons on the RRC
5. The vacuum pressure should drop slightly and regenerate, the pipe is in suction mode to the
EliTE vacuum pipe lifter if no lights or siren are visible or heard.
6. Let the vacuum pressure reach its maximum
7. Switch off the diesel engine
8. Switch off the RRC
9. Do not lift or suspend the pipe!!

The vacuum pressure showing on the pressure gauge (suction pad and main unit) should not drop
more than:
10% in 10 minutes
If the unit loses more than 10% vacuum in 10 minutes you have a pressure leak in the system.

Call a mechanic – Components checks = 2/ 3 way valve hose outlet, hoses to suction pad,
fittings – suction pad seal - rectify the leak – repeat the vacuum test 2

Once the vacuum test 2 is completed you can be sure that the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter is vacuum
secure. On successful competition of the vacuum test 1 and 2 you may start to work.

Trouble shooting the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter

Apart from obvious technical faults of the equipment i.e.

Problem The engine will not start

Remedy Check that you have diesel in the diesel tank

You should be familiar with the below mentioned errors which may occur…

Problem During lifting, the suction alarm and yellow flashing light constantly activate. I
have carried out Vacuum test 1 and 2 but the vacuum (neg pressure) will
not climb higher than –0. 65bar on the pressure gauge.
Remedy Replace the carbon vanes within the vacuum pump (4 pcs)
On completion carry out Vacuum test 1.

Problem Yellow light constantly flashes without siren! Vac test 1 & 2 are successfully
completed however the light will not distinguish.
Remedy Switch the AoD to the ON position.

Problem No reaction from the RRC (Radio remote control)

Remedy Your transmitter has the correct security key? (Check key number)
Check = transmitter and receiver…
Battery is fully charged?
Cables are connected?
Transmitter has changed to stand-by mode? = Re - start.

Problem Suddenly I cannot release the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter from the pipe
surface, I have check the RRC transmitter and receiver, and the battery is
also fully charged.
Remedy Magnetic solenoid has a malfunction due to dust or dirt and requires cleaning at the
filter :-
Secure the pipe at ground level
Switch off the RRC
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the suction pad at the suction pad.
The EliTE vacuum pipe lifter will now release the pipe.
Bring the complete unit to ground level and secure the unit on its standby legs
Switch the unit completely off and strip the magnetic valve. Clean with warm soapy
water, dry completely and reinstall.
Start the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter as previously described and carry out Vacuum
test 1 and 2

Problem During operations with a pipe the warning yellow warning light is activated
Remedy Check your sealing on the suction pad (renewal?) and fittings to the main
unit. Once the problem is rectified, carry out Vacuum test 2

Suction pad sealing

Only fit the suction pad sealing that is supplied by the manufacturer. No responsibility for the
equipment will be accepted by the manufacturer if the recommended and supplied sealing is not
installed!

Replacing the suction pad sealing

Taking out the complete sealing

1. Dismount the suction pad from the main unit and secure the main unit on its stand-by legs.
2. Turn the suction pad on to its back, the underside should now be clearly visible.
3. Take out the suction pad sealing which is to be replaced.
4. Once you have taken out the sealing, ensure that the C-profile is clean and free of debris.

Installing new complete sealing

1. The sealing should not be cut to the exact length unit it is almost completely fitted.
2. Start at a centre point of the suction pad and work your way completely around until you arrive at
the position you stated from…
3. Lay the sealing in the C –profile as shown below.
4. Press the sealing into the C-profile with a blunt chisel type tool (supplied)
5. Whilst pressing the seal into the C profile ensure that you do not stretch the seal whist moving in
the forward position. To prevent stretching push the fitted seal in the reverse direction at frequent
intervals of fitting

Tool direction

Sealing

C - Profile

No. 3 No. 4
28 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

6. Once you have replaced the complete seal in the suction pad ensure that it is at least 3 – 5cm
longer than you require. Now cut the seal with a sharp knife as straight as possible.

7. Now place both ends of the seal in the C - profile and press the seal down to a tight end fit. This will allow for
ideal sealing.

8. The sealing should finally look flat and even with no open gap at the joint.

9. Before you commence/ start work you must carry out Vacuum test 2. This will confirm that the sealing
has been fitted correctly and that the machine is suitable and safe to work with.
29 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

Fitting pieces of sealing instead of the complete seal

It is allowed that the operator replaces pieces of damaged sealing as opposed to the complete seal. If
this is done, you must abide by the following rules.

1. Only fit maximum 5 pieces along the each length of the suction pad (see below), leave roughly
30cm from either end of the suction pad (red). The end pieces should be replaced as 1 complete
piece.

Leave 30cm from either end free. The end pieces

should be replaced as a complete piece.

1 2 3 4 5

Maximum 5 pieces along the length of the suction pad

2. The seal ends should be joined together as described earlier in page 22.
3. Again, you must carry out vacuum test 2 as described in page 20, before you start/ commence
work with the machine.
30 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

Remember

1. 10% in 10 minutes

2. The red light and warning siren is indicating that your engine has stopped
performing!

If this occurs during a pipe lifting procedure, slowly lower the complete unit to the safe
ground level floor. Secure the pipe and release the suction by using the RRC. If this is not
possible disconnect the vacuum hose from the suction pad.

Call a mechanic to rectify the problem.

3. The yellow light and warning siren is indicating that you have insufficient
vacuum to lift!

If this occurs during a pipe lifting procedure, slowly lower the complete unit to the safe
ground level floor. Secure the pipe and release the suction by using the RRC. If this is not
possible disconnect the vacuum hose from the suction pad.

Carry out the component checks as described in Vacuum test 1 and 2. –

Then successfully carry out and complete Vacuum test 1 and 2 before you
start to work with the EliTE vacuum pipe lifter

Components

Radio remote control

Radio remote control (RRC)

All units are equipped with a radio remote control (RRC) hand set transmitter (receiver being mounted on
the main unit) allowing the operator to apply and release suction from a safe distance (excavator/ crane
cabin) without touching the unit during operation. Additionally the RRC is naturally certified with safely
class 3 for machines with emergency stop etc. The emergency stop will prevent the RRC from giving
commands to the main machine, therefore rendering the suction function. The batteries for the RRC are
rechargeable within 2 – 4 hrs and have a capacity of 8 hrs, two batteries are supplied together with a
battery charger, IP 65. Due to safety reasons it is not possible that two or more vacuum units are
controlled by one and the same RCC. All frequencies are individual and the units are certified for EU and
USA.

Vacuum pumps

Note: The 12TD unit is equipped with the KVT 3.80

The 16TD unit is equipped with the KVT 3.100

Simplicity of design with only one shaft and direct drive produces robust, long-lasting vacuum pumps with
low maintenance and running costs. These vacuum pumps operate completely oil-free; the individual
chambers are separated by long-life vanes. Already featuring integrated intake filters and control valves,
these vacuum pumps can be fitted with other accessories without a problem. The compact cover ensures
low noise and heat emission. Optional corrosion protection also makes these vacuum pumps suitable for
extracting moist air.

41 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

Vacuum pump

Technical information

 Sucked in air generally does not result in the destruction or damage to the pump.
 Definitely no rust accumulation due to wetness
 Small amounts of water (KVT ca. 0.5 Litre) may enter the pumps internal body due to its
constructive characteristics. The water will accumulate within the pumps filter box,
evaporate or can be blown out.
 Should the carbon vanes be damaged due to the suction of large amounts of water, they
can be replaced with the absolute minimum of effort.

IMPORTANT

In regard to the above assessment and findings:

1. The two mentioned fitted guards have been re-designed and fit the unit as best as possible.
However we, the manufacturer, strongly recommend that personnel do not attempt to place their
limbs into high speed rotating shafts or other revolving components.

2. The mentioned exhaust direction has now been re directed away from the diesel fuel cap. We the
manufacturer strongly recommend that the refuelling of equipment is only carried out when the
diesel engine is switched OFF!

The above illustration shows how the new V-ribbed belt must be installed on the gear.
To achieve this, act as follows.

1. Switch the electricity completely off (key/ engine) and disconnect the power supply (Battery).
2. Loosen the screws No. 1, 2 and 3 at the rubber damper (see figure below) to release the drive shaft
from the drive disc.
3. Turn away from drive disc.
4. Loosen the screws A, B and C of the gearing plate and the counter bolt D.
5. Now remove the defective V-ribbed belt (if it exists) and replace it with a new one.
6. Please make absolutely sure that the ribs of the belt are positioned exactly in the tracks of the drive disc.

The installation is almost completed.

The final step is to now apply the correct tension:

7. You must now use the provided “mini hand

scale” as shown to the right

8. As shown directly below, place the eye (lasso)

into the provided tension point bolt.

9. Now pull the hand scale towards you to apply the correct tension of 25kg. Red markers need to be
aligned, which is also equal to 25kg.

10. Ensuring that the tension is held at 25kg, now screw the
counter bolt (D) as shown below. This will hold the tension
bar (Y) drive belt at the required 25kg.
11. Once (D) is secured, release the hand scale

12. The tension is now correct and completed.

13. Tighten the screws A, B and C to refasten the gearing plate.
14. Finally refit the drive shaft to the engine drive wheel by bolting down screws 1, 2 and 3.

15. Reconnect the power supply (Battery).

16. Refit the guard security cages suitably over the gearing
17. Carry out a pre start check as per the operator’s manual
18. Start the ELiTE unit and let the engine run for 30 minutes until the gearing is suitably warm.
19. Switch off the ELiTE unit.
20. Switch the electricity completely off (key/ engine) and disconnect the power supply (Battery).
21. Dismount the guard security cages suitably over the gearing
22. Loosen the gearing plate (A, B and C) etc.
23. Repeat 8 – 17 (excepting 14.) This is to ensure that the newly fitted parts are seated after a short
engine run.

24. Before normal work begins, be sure to carry out the Pre start checks and both
Vacuum test 1 & 2!

Hydraulic Rotator
182 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

183 ELiTE 12 & 16TD vacuum pipe lifters

The rotator has two hydraulic inlet ports (Red rectangles in datasheet) for rotation clockwise and anti-
clockwise. The excavator must be technically equipped to allow both rotations (this is anyway the case of
99% of all excavators). We do not supply any hydraulic fitting and hydraulic pipe.
The rotator is coupled to auxiliary lines of the excavator. Rotator requires maximum 320bar of pressure and
an oil flow rate of 15 – 25 liters per min. (15 liters is minimum. 25ltrs is optimal/ ideal).
The hydraulic piping for this pipe lifter is straight forward and is an easy configuration by a local supplier
onsite. We would assist in this. Basically 1 lifter is measured up and sets of piping are put together and
installed in one day. In the picture below is only an example but showed the yoke’s total dimension and the
type of fitting required for this rotator.

Standard Yoke
This machine is equipped with a standard Yoke that is
manufactured to fit your excavator arm’s measurements.
Once manufactured, it is not adjustable.
Excavators stick width and stick ID of the pin hole used for all
attachments/ tools.

Pin diameter OD: 110 mm

Yoke’s width: 470 mm

Pendle brake
The yoke-rotator assembly consists
also of an oscillation and pendle
brake which prevents any
unnecessary swinging or rocking
when a pipe is deployed.
