LESSON 5: NEIGHBORS

1. Describe one of your neighbors? (Formula 8)

I would like to talk about Yen, who lives next to my house, where I’m still living
now. I first got to know her at around the age of 7 when her family moved to live
near my house from another city for some reasons. After that, I think it’s probably
because we’re the same age and we have a lot in common, so I gradually got
along with her really well. So we have known each other for almost 16 years.
Talking about her appearance, what I was impressed with from the first time I
met her was her long butt-length hair. And to this day, she still has that long hair.
Besides, she has a petite figure and big round eyes, it seems to make her look
cuter.
When it comes to her personality, she is a kind person. She was extremely
friendly with children around our neighborhood and helpful towards the senior
citizens. Besides, after many years of knowing each other, what I admire most
about her is hard-working. Whenever I saw her, she was studying in class, at the
library or at home.
What I remember most about her was when we went to fly kites in the field. At
that time, because of running too fast, I fell. My knees were bleeding so much
that I couldn’t walk. And Yen is the one who carried me back. I was really grateful
for his help and a few days later, I gave her a small gift.
I really enjoy her company. Every now and again, I try to fix him a home-
cooked meal.
I always feel that I’m lucky to have Yen as a neighbour. She is not only my
neighbor but also my best friend. If she moved out of the neighborhood, I would
be so sad.

2. Have you ever had any problems with your neighbor?

Yes, this is a problem that has just happened. Recently, I got a new neighbor
who just moved in across from me. Although I haven’t never met her yet, I can
hear her TV set every day, especially at night, because she turned the volume
up really high that even though it’s a road away, my family could still hear it
clearly. After a month, we ended up talking to each other yesterday, and she
never turned the volume up high at night from then on.

3. Do you think neighbors are important?

Well, to my thinking, the neighbor is an essential part of one’s life. They are the
ones who live close to us and can help us whenever we need. Besides, because
neighbors live next door, they’re the first ones to keep an eye on your property
when you’re not around. Moreover, they are also right there if you are in danger
and knowing they are there might make you stronger or less afraid.

4. What are the differences between neighbors living in a city and those living in
the countryside? (Formula 7)
Personally, there are a few differences between neighbors living in a city and
those living in the countryside.
Well, for those who live in the city, because of modernity and the development of
technology, electrical appliances like TVs or smartphones are a great barrier in
people’s interaction with their neighbours, despite the fact that they live right next
door. Some people find it hard when having to maintain lengthy conversations
with neighbors after a long day at work so they just plot down in front of the TV
in the evening and are couch potatoes.. And that has a very bad effect on
relationships between neighbors.
Unlike neighbors living in a city, people who live in the countryside are totally
different. People often go out for a walk in the evening or sit outside their houses
and talk to each other about what’s happening in the neighborhood. Hence,
people get along with each other very well and always give a hand when
needed.

LESSON 6: FRIENDS
1. Do you prefer having many friends, or just a few close friendships?
Personally, I’d prefer having a few friends rather than many friends. Perhaps this
is partly because I’m an introvert, so socialsing with a lot of people is not my
thing. For instance, I am quite shy when it comes to strangers. Besides, I think a
few best friends will surely be there for me when I’m down in the dumps. In
fact, my close friend has always lent me a sympathetic ear when I broke up
with my ex. Finally, I also firmly believe that having one close friendship is a
much more rewarding and enriching experience than possessing multiple shallow
relationships.

2. What do you think are the most important qualities for friends to have?
From where I stand, I feel that well, firstly, I think my first instinct would be to
say that being trustworthy and loyal are the most important qualities for a friend,
with whom I can discuss my personal matters which can not be shared with
others. Because being reliable causes the relationship between them to last long
and loyalty makes them trust each other’s sincerity. For example, I really enjoy
the company of my best friend whom I have known for almost fifteen years
when I’m down in the dumps since it makes me feel more comfortable. I think
no one wants friends they think might stab them in the back.

3. Have you ever made friends online?

Well, I’d say yes, I have some online friends. I think when we are online, we don’t
have to worry about how to initiate the conversation with someone new and how
to keep the conversation going without any awkwardness. However, I know that I
never know a person’s true colors until I meet them in person. So I think we
really have to be careful when we establish friendships with someone online.

4. Have you ever had a falling - out with a friend?

Oh, definitely. Although we have known each other for a good decade, every
now and again, we squabble over small issues such as my friends forgot to help
me buy something or I forgot to wash the dishes. Sometimes, we also have
bigger ones because of misunderstandings in life. At times like these, we
always try to stay calm and sit down together to talk and find solutions. And in
the end, my friends and I have been through thick and thin.
