Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Mathematics is generally considered as the most important subject at school

levels all over the world. All the major commissions and committee report on education

since independence emphasized the importance of mathematical knowledge and its

utilitarian values. In spite of all these reports and recommendation still in the Philippines,

many students struggle with mathematics and become disaffected as they constantly

bump in two obstacles to engagement. It is an agreeable fact that, amongst the subject

taught in schools, mathematics is considered as one of the toughest subjects. But the

reason behind this might be different in different situations. Lot more studies were

conducted in this area and researches come up with their recommendations as well. But

still, the problem of low performance in mathematics appears to be pertinent in all levels

of school education. This is a serious issue to be tackled possibly by the teachers

concerned and even the Department of Education (Landicho, 2021).

Educators, trainers, and researchers have long been interested in exploring

variables contributing effectively for quality of performance of learners. These variables

are inside and outside school that affect students’ quality of academic achievement.

These factors may be termed as student factors, family factors, school factors and peer

factors. There is a range of factors that affect on the quality of performance of students

(Waters &Marzano, 2016). A series of variables are to be considered when to identify the
affecting factors towards quality of academic success. Identifying the most contributing

variables in quality of academic performance is a very complex and challenging job.

According to Ryan Stanley (2021), no school subject divides children more than

math. While many children thrive at topics like problem-solving, geometry and numeracy,

others find math so hard to learn that they feel overwhelmed, frustrated or anxious when

doing anything math-related.

The researchers as a student experienced to struggle understanding the

mathematics but they tried their best to cope with it since it is important. Thus, the

researchers wanted to conduct the study to know the perception of grade 9 students and it

will enhance the researchers’ understanding whether it has an impact on the students’

academic performance towards Mathematics.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to know the perception of the selected grade 9 students towards

Mathematics of Divine Word College of Legazpi 2022-2023. Specifically, the researchers

will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What are the perception of the selected grade 9 students toward Mathematics?;

2. What academic preparations do the selected grade 9 students have for higher

Math?;

3. What difficulties are encountered by the students?; and,

4. What intervention may be proposed to address this concern?.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will involve grade 9 students enrolled from Divine Word College of Legazpi in

the school year 2022-2023. It will investigate regarding the perception of the student's

towards Mathematics. It will exclude students who are not enrolled and not in grade 9.

Significance of the Study:

Introductory statement for this study will benefit the following:

Students to realize and boost their confidence on how to improve their performance

towards learning or understanding the mathematics.

For the parents to continuously and be patient enough to support their children in
learning the mathematics.

The teachers will strategize on how to better teach that would be appreciative and easier
for the students to learn the mathematics.

For the DepEd and CHED to improve the curriculum and provide the educators of
seminars/trainings/workshop to enhance their knowledge, creativity and skills in teaching
the mathematics. And to designed several interventions to assist students who are
struggling in mathematics.
