To get es un verbo muy utilizado en inglés, teniendo usos y significados muy variados:
• en su forma reflexiva (expresa la idea de pasar de un estado a otro estado diferente, una
evolución):
The kids are getting tired. Los niños empiezan a estar cansados.
Kevin got drunk last night. Kevin se emborrachó anoche.
Get ready! ¡Prepárate!
It's getting late. Se está haciendo tarde.
• dar, servir:
Can I get you a drink? ¿Puedo traerle algo de beber?
• llevar:
I'll get you there on time. Te llevaré allí a tiempo.
• entender, comprender:
I didn't get what you just said. No he entendido (o no he pillado) lo que acabas de decir.
• atrapar o coger:
Get him! ¡Atrápenlo! (= to catch)

Excepciones y variantes
En inglés americano, el participio pasado de “to get” suele ser “gotten”, en vez de “got”, así que
puedes utilizar cualquiera de ellos.
-Cuando llegamos, vimos que habían llegado a la fiesta antes que nosotros.
When we arrived, we saw that they had got to the party before us (Reino Unido).
When we arrived, we saw that they had gotten to the party before us (EE. UU.).
En la tabla anterior habrás notado que es frecuente encontrar combinaciones formadas por “to get +
preposición” (off, on, by, etc.) cuando en español se usa un verbo reflexivo. Eso ocurre también con
las combinaciones de “get + sustantivo”. Aquí tienes ejemplos de algunas expresiones muy
comunes:
Get mejorar My English got a lot better after regularly reading that blog.
better Mi inglés mejoró muchísimo gracias a que leía con
frecuencia ese blog.
Get empeorar The political situation can’t get much worse, can it?
worse La situación política no puede empeorar mucho, ¿verdad?
Get divorciarse Mike got divorced last month, and he’s already dating a new
divorce woman.

Get lost perderse We got completely lost and it was getting dark.
