USER
RESEARCH
• Created 3 personas for creator-mode users. One
layman, one well versed and the last somewhat
good with tech. They all have varying degrees of
interest in writing.

Proto • Age ranges were kept to my understanding of the

app users
Personas
• Proto personas were based on my assumption and
research on Dorian’s discord and YouTube content
creators as there is no real data at this point. We can
validate these hypotheses with A/B testing, surveys
and gathering player feedback.

FEEDBACK REVIEW
(DISCORD)
• A lot of users had questions around how to earn
revenue on Dorian. Especially around the 500 hearts
requirement.
• Users also asked about the dollar conversion of
Feedback revenue around received hearts.
• Quality of life features were requested (zoomed out
Review timeline view, better expressions and animations)
• Players have to rely on reading articles at the writer’s
corner or research online for guidance on how to get
started.
• Some features of creator mode are not surfaced (Eg: hold
to change expressions on mobile)
• There is not sufficient guidance on what steps to complete
next.
• Users don’t know about the requirements to earn revenue
Pain Points & on Dorian.
• Web creator mode can be surfaced on mobile, if users
Observations require more functionality.
• There are some gaps in communication on mobile (Eg:
why is character button disabled sometimes, creator
mode is accessed via a ‘Play’ button which could lead to
misunderstanding)

Note: Although User Research was done on assumptions

due to lack of data at this point, it can help to align the team
towards user empathy and identifying pain points
COMPETITIVE
ANALYSIS OF
CREATOR MODE UX
• Starts with upselling their most interesting
features

• Asks User about their primary use case : Read,

Write or Both and then guides them based on
Wattpad - their requirements.

Notes • There is a surfacing for premium subscription

(this might be too early in the flow for users to
fully understand the benefits before using the
app)
• Chapters has information about their creator
mode on web when trying to create a story.

• Creating a text story leads the user through a

guided tutorial (there are previous step and skip
buttons to accommodate user preference)
Chapters -
• Addition of choices on mobile, with a choices
Notes editor and it’s own tutorial.

• Additional features to drive engagement and user

retention (Daily Login, Daily Tasks, Achievements
and Collectibles)
• Once the user taps on ‘create’, the tutorial guides
them through the process.

• Cover page also shows top creators along with

popular titles. This is something aspirational for
creators.
Struckd -
Notes • There is a rate app option at the end of the flow,
can drive better app rating when surfaced at high
points of the app.
• Although Episode doesn’t have a creator mode
on mobile, the onboarding and player
customization is done through a scenario. This
clearly communicates what they have to offer,
works as a great first impression and also hooks
Episode - then invests the player into the game.
Notes
• There are a lot of animations, camera angles and
delight moments which bring more life to the
characters.
• On entering creator mode, the user is guided
through the creation process with prompts.

• The creation options are ordered to resemble the

general creation process. (Characters, Outfits,
Speech Bubble Styles, New Episode, Continue &
Publish)
Episode Web
- Notes • There are many options available for story
creation (Animations, Camera zoom, items,
wardrobe changes and input custom code)
The drawback is there is no visual scripting and
everything must be entered using code.

• Users can re-use scripts published by other

creators (Eg: Script to shake camera)
• On entering the website, the user is introduced
to the website features (including prompts on
going to the discord server button for help)

• The tutorials are broken into smaller chunks

which are triggered only when the user accesses
them for the first time.
Chapters Web
- Notes • There are also prompts when the user sees
certain buttons for the first time.

• Tapping on the preview pane allows for easier

editing (customization, expressions)

portability and also reducing barrier of entry with requirement of
computer devices.
• Offer more tools to further simplify the process for creators.

back button at times.

Switched to material design

guidelines for consistency and
user familiarity.
Feedback for inactive
buttons
Adding feedback for inactive button states can inform users on
what is going on as well as how to solve it.
Play Button shows up on
