SECTION TWO - DEFINITIONS

2.15 Pull-up torque (of an a.c. motor)

Replace the existing rlefinition by the following:
The smallest value of the steady-state asynchronous torque which the motor develops
between zero speed and the speed which corresponds to the breakdown torque, when the
motor is supplied at the rated voltage and frequency.
This definition does not apply to those asynchronous motors of which the torque continu-
ally decreases with increase in speed.
NOft-. - In addition to the steady-state asynchronous torques, harmonic synchronous korques. which are a function
of rotor load angle. will be prescn, at specific speeds.
At such speeds the accelerating torque may be negative for some rotor load angles.
Ex’@erience and calculation show this to be an unstable operating condition and therefore harmonic
synchronous torques do not prevent motor acceleration and arc excluded from the definitions.
34-1 Amend. 2 0 I EC 1989 - 5 -

2.16 Breakdown torque (of an a.c. motor)

Replace the existing definition by the following:
The maximum value of the steady-state asynchronous torque which the motor develops
without an abrupt drop in speed, when the motor is supplied at the rated voltage and
frequency.
This definition does not apply to those asynchronous motors of which the torque continu-
ally decreases with increase in speed.

12. Electrical conditions

Sub-clause 12.2.1
Replace the first paragraph by the following;
A.C. motors shall be suitable for operation on a supply voltage having a harmonic content
as limited by the requirements of a) below, and, for a polyphase motor, from a supply system
where the voltage unbalance is defined by the requirements of b) below.

34-1 Amend. 2 8 I E C 1989 -7-

The second paragraph remains unchanged.

Replace Item a) by the following:
Three-phase a.c. motors (including synchronous motors, but not design N motors) and
a.c. single-phase motors shall be suitable for operation on a supply voltage having a harmonic
voltage factor (HVF) not exceeding 0,02 unless the manufacturer declares otherwise.

Design N motors (see IEC Publication 34-12: Rotating electrical machines, Part 12:
Starting performance of single-speed three-phase cage induction motors for voltages up to and
including 660 V) shall be suitable for operation on a supply voltage having an HVF not
exceeding 0,03.

The HVF shall be computed by using the following formula:

HVF= S$
where:
J
4s per unit value of the harmonic voltage (referred to rated voltage U,,)
n =order of harmonic (not divisible by three in the case of three-phase a.c. motors)

Usually it is sufficient to consider harmonic orders n< 13.

In temperature-rise testing as specified in Section Five, the HVF shall not exceed 0,015.

All other parts of Sub-clause 12.2.1 remain unchanged.

Page 35

12. Electrical conditions

Sub-clause 12.2.3
Replace the second and third paragraphs by the following:
It is necessary, therefore, for motors with a rated output exceeding 5 kW, intended for
supply from a static power convertor, to be designed for operation from a specified supply,
and, if considered necessary by the motor manufacturer, for an external inductance to be
provided for reducing the undulation.
The static power convertor supply shall be characterized by means of an identification code,
as follows:
[CCC-u,,-f-L]
where:
CCC is the identification code for convertor connection according to the future i E C Publication XXX.

Cr., consists of three or four digits indicating the rated alternating voltage at the input terminals of the convertor.
in volts:
fconsists of two digits indicating the rated input frequency. in hertz:
L consists of one. two or three digits indicating the series inductance to be added externally to the motor armature
circuit. in millihcnrys. If this is zero. it is omitted.

Motors with rated output not exceeding 5 kW, instead of being tied to a specific type of
static power convertor, may be designed for use with any static power convertor, with or
without external inductance, provided that the rated form factor for which the motor is

.
34-1 Amend. 2 0 IEC 1989 -9-

designed will not be surpassed and that the insulation level of the motor armature circuit
respects the rated alternating voltage at the input terminals of the static power convertor.

Nofc. - By stating the identification code, or alternatively. in the case of motors with rated output not cxmding
5 kW. the rated form factor and the rated alternating voltage at the input terminals of the static power
convertor. the ability of the d.c. motor armature to carry subsequent undulating currents and eventually
to be designed for a higher than usual dielectric test voltage is characterized.

To determine the dielectric test voltage from Table V for d.c. motors supplied by static
power convertors,, the direct voltage of the motor or the r.m.s. phase-to-phase value of the
rated alternating voltage at the input terminals of the static power convertor shall be used,
whichever is the higher.

Nofe. - If an input transformer is incorporated in the static power cnnvcnor equipment. the voltage at the input
terminals of rhc static .power CO~YCROF referred to above is the voltage at the output terminals of the
transfomlcr.

In all cases, the undulation of the static power convertor output current is assumed to be
so low as to result in a difference between the highest and the lowest peak amplitudes of the
current pulses over one cycle of not greater than 10% of the highest pulse amplitude at rated
current.

12.3 Voltage variations during operation

Replace this sub-clause by the following:

12.3 Voltage and frequency variations during operation

For a.c. machines, combinations of voltage variations and frequency variations are classi-.
fied as being either Zone A or Zone B, in accordance with Figure 12, page 22, for generators.
and Figure 13, page 22, for motors.
For d.c. machines, when directly connected to a normally constant d.c. bus, Zones A and B
apply only to the voltages.
A machine shall be capable of performing its primary function continuously within Zone A,
but need not comply fully with its performance at rated voltage and frequency (see rating point
in Figures 12 and 13), and may exhibit some deviations. Temperature rises may be higher than
at rated voltage and frequency.

A machine shall be capable of performing its primary function within Zone B, but may
exhibit greater deviations from its performance at rated voltage and frequency than in Zone A.
Temperature rises may be higher than at rated voltage and frequency and most likely will be
higher than those in Zone A. Extended operation at the perimeter of Zone B is not recom-
mended.

For the purpose of this sub-clause, the primary function of a machine shall be to provide
the following:
a ) an a.c. generator: rated apparent power (kVA), at rated power
factor where this is separately controllable:

b) an a.c. motor: rated torque (Nm);

,
34-1 Amend. 2 8 I EC 1989 - 11 -

c) a synchronous motor: rated torque (Nm), the excitation maintaining

either rated field current or rated power fac-
tor, where this is separately controllable;

d) a synchronous condenser: rated apparent power (kVA) within the zone

applicable to a generator (see Figure 12);
unless otherwise agreed between the manufac-
turer and the purchaser;
e) a turbine-type machine with rated output see I EC Publication 34-3: Rotating Electrical
of 10 MVA and above: Machines, Part 3: Specific requirements for
.. turbine-type synchronous machines;

f) a d.c. generator: rated output (kW);

g) a d.c. motor: rated torque (Nm), the excitation of a shunt-
wound motor maintaining rated speed, where
this is separately controllable.

Where a machine has more than one rated voltage or a rated voltage range, the temperature-
rise limits or temperature limits (see Table I, II or III) shall apply to each rated voltage.

Norex 1. - In practical applications and operating conditions, a machine will sometimes be required to operate
putside the perimeter of Zone A. Such excursions should be limited in value. duration, and frequency
of occurrence. Corrective mca~u~n should. be taken. where practical, within a reasonable time. for
example. a reduction in output. Such action may avoid a reduction in machine life from temperature
e!Tccts.
..
2. - The tempaaturc-rise limits or temperature limiu in accordance with this standard apply at the rating
point and may be progressively exceeded as the operating point moves away from the raring point. For
conditions at the extreme boundaries of Zone A, the tcmpcrature rises and tempcraturcs may exceed the
limits of temperature rise and temperature specified in this standard by approximately 10 K.

3. - An a.c. motor will start at the lower limit of voltage only if its starting torque is adquatcly matched to
the counter-torque of the load. but thii is not a requirement of this clause. For starting performance of
Design N motors. see I EC Publication 3442: Rotating Electrical Machins. Pan 12: Starting Perform-
ance of Single-speed Tluee-phase Cage Induction Moton for Voltages up to and including 660 V.

13. Thermal classification of machines

A thermal classification in accordance with I E C Publication 85: Thermal Evaluation and

Classification of Electrical Insulation, shall be assigned to the insulation systems used in
machines. The classification of the insulation systems shall be by means of letters and not by
temperature values.
34-I Amend. 2 8 I E C 1989 - 13 -

It is the responsibility of the manufacturer of the machine to interpret the results obtained
by thermal endurance testing as appropriate to his machine type and application.
Norm 1. - The thermal classification of a new insulation system should not be assumed to be directly related to the
thermal capability of the individual materials used in it.

2. - ‘Ihe continued USC of existing classifications is acceptable where they have been proved by experience.

Page 43

15. Determination of temperature rise

15.3.2 Determination of temperature rise by the embedded temperature detector (ETD) method

Replace the third paragraph and the note by the following:

The highest reading of ETD elements shall be used to determine compliance with require-
ments for temperature rise or temperature limits.
NOI. - ETD elements of their connections may fail and give incorrect readings. Therefore. if one or more of these
readings xc shorn to be erratic after investigation, they should be eliminated.
