Introduction

Unintended pregnancy is a pregnancy that is either mistimed or unwanted at the time of

conception. It is a core concept in understanding the fertility of populations and the unmet need
for contraception. Despite the social and cultural importance of child bearing in many Filipino
communities, unwanted pregnancies are the source of problems in the families. This is more
severe for young girls who often fall pregnant out of wed lock. The best option for them is to go
for an abortion just to avoid facing the judgment from their families and the community in
general.
Unintended pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of morbidity for women, and with
health behaviors during pregnancy that are associated with adverse effects. For example, women
with an unintended pregnancy may delay prenatal care, which may affect the health of the infant.
Women of all ages may have unintended pregnancies, but some groups, such as teens, are at a
higher risk.
Unwanted pregnancies are affected by number of factors including personal beliefs, social
services, religious and cultural values as well as the existing laws in the community. Most of the
time unwanted pregnancies started as unplanned pregnancy, but occasionally the planned
pregnancy may end up into being unwanted pregnancy This is much of a problem among the
youths , because majority of them are facing various problems with regards to their reproductive
health needs including contraceptive use services are not protecting the youths from infections as
well as unplanned pregnancies, this is due to the fact that there is limited access to contraceptive
to this vulnerable group, the barriers may include lack of information, misinformation, fear of
side effects as well as social, cultural and economic barriers in accessing the family planning
services.
Identify Stakeholder:

Individual- The effects of abortion on an individual, both physically and emotionally. Physically,
there may be short-term and long-term health considerations. Emotional responses can include
relief, guilt, sadness, or a mix of emotions. It's important for teenagers to have access to support,
whether from friends, family, or counseling services, to navigate the emotional aftermath and
make informed choices about their well-being.
The impact can also extend to educational and social aspects, influencing relationships with
peers and family members.
Family- The effects of abortion on family may experience a range of emotions such as shock,
disappointment, or concern. Individuals within the family might have different perspectives on
the situation, leading to potential emotional strain.
It's important for families to approach such situations with empathy, compassion, and a
commitment to open communication to navigate the challenges that may arise. Seeking
professional guidance or counseling can also be beneficial for both individuals and the family
unit as a whole.
Society- the effects of abortion on society attitudes and stigmas surrounding unplanned
pregnancies and abortions can impact how individuals are perceived and treated. Reducing
stigma requires broader societal changes in perceptions of women's reproductive choices.
Unplanned pregnancies can affect educational and career trajectories for young women. Societal
support systems, including policies related to maternity leave and childcare, can influence the
ability of young mothers to continue their education and pursue career goals. Furthermore
addressing these societal effects requires comprehensive approaches, including access to
reproductive healthcare, sex education, and policies that support women's reproductive choices.
Open dialogue and empathy at the societal level can contribute to more supportive environments
for individuals facing these situations.

Ethical Issue

Discrimination against individuals based on their abortion decisions can manifest in various
forms, including social stigma, judgment, or even denial of access to healthcare services. It's
crucial to promote empathy, respect personal choices, and work towards creating a non-
judgmental society that supports individuals in making informed decisions about their
reproductive health. Advocacy for reproductive rights and education can contribute to reducing
the stigma associated with abortion. Also, Discrimination surrounding unwanted pregnancy and
induced abortion among female youths is a complex issue. It often involves societal stigmas, lack
of access to comprehensive sex education, and limited reproductive healthcare options.
Addressing this requires fostering open conversations, promoting education, and advocating for
women's reproductive rights to create a more supportive and understanding environment.
Societal judgment surrounding unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion among female youth
often stems from cultural norms, moral beliefs, and lack of comprehensive sex education.
Addressing this issue requires challenging stereotypes, promoting open dialogue, and advocating
for education to foster a more empathetic and understanding society that respects individual
choices regarding reproductive health.

Alan Shlemon (November 03 2021) Abortion-choice advocates consider their view morally
superior. They believe they are defending a woman’s right to control her body. What they don’t
realize, though, is that their position leads to an act of unjust discrimination. Abortion is a type
of discrimination. It’s the worst kind, in fact. It disqualifies a human being from being a valuable
person. Just to be clear, a woman should be able to control her own body. She should be
generally free from the shackles of government regulation. Men (or women) in public office
should not write laws that interfere with a woman’s personal decisions. She should be free to
make her own choices about her healthcare, her career, whether she marries (and whom she
marries), whether to have children, etc. We can all agree with that. Our laws stipulate, however,
that personal decisions are restricted when they hurt or unjustly discriminate against other
people. The question is whether or not a woman’s decision to procure an abortion is an example
of unjust discrimination. The challenge with this question is that the circumstance of pregnancy
is incredibly unique. There is nothing analogous to it. During pregnancy, another whole human
being starts his or her life inside a woman.

This new person literally lives inside a woman’s body for nine months. That creates a tension
that doesn’t exist in any other circumstance: a woman is a sovereign person in control of her
body, but inside her body exists another person. It’s easy to see the uniqueness of the situation.
Though the average person who supports abortion might deny the unborn is a human being,
most people who know the biological facts can’t deny the unborn is a human being. This is
because the science of embryology is decisive about the status of the unborn. From the
moment of conception, the unborn is a living, distinct, human being. We know the unborn is
living because it meets the biological criteria for life (it grows, responds to stimulation, and
converts nutrition into energy). We know the unborn is distinct from the mother because it has
its own brain, heart, sex organs, fingerprints, and DNA. We know the unborn is human because it
has a human genetic signature. Furthermore, living things reproduce their own kind. That means
the product of human sexual union will always produce another human being—100% of the
time.”

Autonomy and Rights-Based Ethics:

Emphasizes individual autonomy and the protection of rights. Supports a woman's right to make
decisions about her own body, including the choice to have an abortion. Focuses on respecting
and protecting individual autonomy and reproductive rights. Supports the right of female youths
to access information and services related to reproductive health, including abortion, without
facing discrimination or barriers. Ethical analysis considers how societal norms and legal
restrictions may impact these rights. autonomy and rights-based ethics showed the importance of
respecting the autonomy of female youths in making decisions about their reproductive health.
Ethical analysis in this context involves examining factors that empower individuals to exercise
their rights, ensuring informed decision-making, and addressing societal, legal, or systemic
barriers that may impede the realization of these rights.

Republic Act No. 10354, also known as the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health
Act of 2012 (RPRHA). This law provides for a national policy on responsible parenthood and
reproductive health, which includes reproductive health services and access to safe abortion for
women who need them. The law also establishes a national program that will offer counseling,
contraception, maternal health care, post-abortion care, and legal assistance to women who seek
abortion. The law also creates a special court that will handle cases involving abortion-related
offenses.
Act. No. 3815 of December 8, 1930, Articles 256 – 259, outlines the penalties for those who
intentionally cause an abortion, those who cause an abortion by violence, those who practice
abortion upon themselves or consent to it, and those who assist in causing an abortion. The
penalties range from prison correctional in its minimum and medium period to reclusion
temporal.
Executive Order 141 on June 25, 2021 signed by Former President Rodrigo Duterte, which aims
to address the root causes of the rising number of adolescent pregnancies 1. The Commission on
Population and Development (PopCom) chief Juan Antonio Perez III hopes that significant
legislation will come out after EO 141 to address gaps in family planning and reproductive
health services among minors who have become parents, or are pregnant.

Solution:

There are serious social and health consequences resulting from the high rate of unintended
pregnancies and induced abortions among young girls. While having access to safe abortion
services is essential, it's also critical to address the real causes of this problem and look at other
options. These alternative solutions offer a multifaceted approach to addressing the issue of
unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions among female youths. By implementing these
solutions alongside ensuring safe abortion access, we can create a more supportive and
empowering environment for young people to make informed decisions about their sexual health
and future. It is important to note that the effectiveness of these solutions will vary depending on
the specific context and needs of the community.
It is crucial to involve stakeholders such as young people, parents, healthcare providers, and
community leaders in developing and implementing these solutions to ensure their effectiveness
and cultural sensitivity.
The best way to prevent the need for an abortion is to practice an effective birth control method.
There are several ways to avoid getting an abortion, including dealing with an unwanted
pregnancy, helping a woman in crisis, and preventing an unwanted pregnancy.
If you are already pregnant and don’t want to have an abortion, you can consider parenting the
child yourself or placing the child for adoption. If you know someone who is facing an unwanted
pregnancy, you can offer support and help her explore all of her options. The most effective way
to avoid getting an abortion is to prevent an unwanted pregnancy in the first place. You can do
this by using an effective birth control method, such as condoms, birth control pills, or an
intrauterine device (IUD).
It’s important to understand your options and make an informed decision that is right for you. If
you are facing an unwanted pregnancy, it’s important to know that you have choices and that
there are people who can help you. If you are considering an abortion, it’s important to seek out
accurate information and talk to a healthcare provider.

Justify Chosen Solution:

Preventing individual abortions to protect women's health involves a multi-faceted approach:

1. *Comprehensive Sex Education:* Implementing comprehensive and age-appropriate sex
education programs can empower individuals to make informed choices regarding contraception
and family planning, reducing the risk of unintended pregnancies.
2. *Accessible Contraception:* Ensure widespread access to affordable and varied
contraceptive methods, addressing barriers such as cost, education, and availability. This allows
women to choose the method that best suits their health and lifestyle.
3. *Healthcare Access:* Improve access to quality healthcare services, including prenatal care
and reproductive health services. Early detection and management of health issues can contribute
to healthier pregnancies and reduce the likelihood of complications.
4. *Support Systems:* Establish support systems that address social and economic factors
contributing to potential abortion decisions. This includes workplace support, affordable
childcare, and social programs to assist women in various life situations.
5. *Mental Health Support:* Recognize and address the mental health aspects of pregnancy.
Providing mental health resources and destigmatizing seeking help can contribute to better
emotional well-being during and after pregnancy.
6. *Legal Protections:* Ensure legal frameworks that protect women's reproductive rights,
providing a safe and supportive environment for those facing health-related challenges during
pregnancy.
7. *Community Education and Awareness:* Foster community awareness campaigns to
reduce stigma around pregnancy and ensure that communities understand the importance of
supporting women's health throughout the reproductive process.

By combining these efforts, society can work towards preventing individual abortions and
safeguarding the health and well-being of women.

Health-based justifications for abortion are rooted in the understanding that preserving the health
of the pregnant individual is crucial. In situations where a pregnancy poses a significant threat to
a woman's physical or mental well-being, abortion can be considered a medically justified
intervention. This approach aligns with the principle of prioritizing the overall health and safety
of the individual, recognizing that complications or risks during pregnancy may necessitate the
decision to terminate in order to protect the woman's health and potentially prevent long-term
harm.

Implementation Plan

In this study aims to create an effective implementation plan for addressing unwanted pregnancy
and induced abortion among female youths, particularly focusing on teenage pregnancy, would
involve a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach. The goal of this study is to reduce
unwanted teenage pregnancies and promote safe and informed reproductive choices among
female youths. In making an effective plan to reduce unwanted pregnancy first you need an
education and awareness school-based programs implement comprehensive and age-appropriate
sex education programs in schools. Address topics such as contraception, reproductive health,
and the consequences of unprotected sex. Also, conduct awareness campaigns in communities to
educate parents, guardians, and community members about the importance of open
communication and support for youths. On the other hand, in this study, we create a plan that
have a multi sectoral collaboration. Collaborate with education, healthcare, legal, and community
organizations. Establish partnerships to pool resources and expertise. And lastly the important
part is youth involvement because we need to involve youths in program planning and
implementation. Create platforms for their voices to be heard in shaping policies and
interventions.

Reflect on Lesson Learned:

The Lesson of Compassion and Empathy The topic of abortion is highly controversial and deeply
personal. There are varying beliefs and perspectives surrounding this issue. However, one lesson
that can be universally learned and applied to the future is the importance of compassion and
empathy.
Respecting Diverse Perspectives: Encouraging open and respectful dialogue allows individuals
to understand and appreciate different viewpoints. Recognizing that people have differing
opinions on abortion can promote a more inclusive and tolerant society.
Supporting Women's Choices: By empathizing with women facing difficult decisions regarding
their pregnancies, it becomes crucial to provide them with support, resources, and options. This
lesson empowers individuals to promote policies that ensure women's reproductive rights and
access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
Addressing Root Causes: Understanding the complex factors that contribute to unintended
pregnancies (including social, cultural, and economic considerations) helps identify areas where
preventive measures can be implemented. For example, emphasizing comprehensive sex
education, increasing access to contraception, and supporting programs that address socio-
economic inequalities.
Prioritizing Healthcare: Recognizing that access to safe and legal abortion is an essential aspect
of reproductive healthcare. This lesson may prompt individuals to advocate for affordable, non-
judgmental, and inclusive healthcare services that cover a wide range of reproductive choices.
Promoting Emotional Support: Acknowledging the potential emotional impact of abortion on
individuals and providing appropriate support is essential. This lesson encourages societies to
foster an environment where people feel comfortable discussing their experiences and can seek
non-judgmental support when needed.
In applying these lessons, it is important to remember that the topic of abortion is personal, and
respectful discussions should be conducted while valuing different perspectives and protecting
individual autonomy.

Conclusion:
Unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion are prevalent among female youths, particularly
students and single girls. Most induced abortions are a consequence of unwanted pregnancy.
Lack of access to proper sexual and reproductive health education and services significantly
contributes to the issue. Societal stigma surrounding sex and abortion further complicates the
situation.
Recommendations Policy and legislation: Implement comprehensive sexual and reproductive
health education in schools, starting at an early age. Ensure affordable and readily accessible
family planning services, including modern contraceptive methods. Decriminalize abortion and
ensure safe and legal access to abortion services for women who choose it. Increase investment
in youth programs that address the social and economic determinants of teenage pregnancy.
Community interventions: Raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health through
community campaigns and media outreach. Combat stigma and discrimination surrounding sex
and abortion by promoting open and honest dialogue. Empower young women and girls by
providing them with information, skills, and resources to make informed decisions about their
sexual and reproductive health.
Individual action: Engage in open and honest communication about sex and relationships with
young people. Support comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education. Challenge
and dismantle harmful gender norms and stereotypes. Advocate for policies that promote
sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.
Further research: Conduct more research on the factors contributing to unwanted pregnancy
and induced abortion among female youths. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing interventions
and develop new strategies for addressing the issue. Disaggregate data by age, socioeconomic
status, and other relevant factors to better understand the needs of different groups of young
women.
By implementing these recommendations, we can work together to reduce the prevalence of
unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion among female youths and ensure that they have the
opportunity to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
