Directions: Read and analyze 04 Handout 2. Once done, answer the questions given below. (4 items x 15
points)

1. After reading the article, what do you think is the significance of the Hallyu to the Philippine Popular Culture in
terms of creation and consumption?

After reading the article, I have known now what Hallyu really means. It was actually used to refer to the popularity
of Korean cultural products abroad, which include dramas and music. It also means a sudden cold wave, a warning
for the Chinese people to be cautious of Korean popular culture. And in my opinion, I do think that the significance
of it to the Philippine Popular Culture in terms of creation and consumption is that Korean culture gave Filipinos a
sense of hope that we can attain in order to have a much better culture. One great example, is that how we exhibited
in terms of beauty and cosmetics. Most Filipinos before tend to like those with light to fair and white skin, high-
bridged nose, differently colored-eyes and hair, and even towering height and good physique (just like the
Caucasians and Americans). This is manifested with the Filipinos undeniable patronization of different whitening
products, supplements for growth, hair- dyes, colored contact lenses, and even undergoing surgical enhancements.
Another example, is the Koreanovelas that became part of the Filipinos daily dose of television scenes. That is why,
and also given from the fact that Hallyu brought a South Korean culture to everyone who has access to television,
movie houses, and internet. This develops further interest not merely for entertainment’s sake but also of the
country, the people and anything Korean. And lastly, we can also say that Hallyu is a product of globalization and
has deliberately or inadvertently popularized Korean culture in various ways.

2. Why do you think Hallyu became a reflection of the Philippine cultural identity?

In my opinion, Hallyu became a reflection of the Philippine cultural identity because Filipinos have the same sense
of identification with Korea. There are a lot of similarities between the two nations that Filipinos actually see a
reflection of their own culture. For one, both nations have a trace of colonialism by another country such as Japan.
The history of Korea reveals that like the Philippines, Japanese invaded their land and Americans helped both of
them to repel the gain of their freedom. Second, the commonalities Filipinos and Koreans share is the value of things
being communal, particularly sharing of food and things we have. Most Filipinos just like most Koreans share food
on the table, commonly using one bowl of food for everyone. We serve soups and stew in a common bowl, some
use serving spoon but some are not. It is also common to let a family member or a friend drink from the same cup,
or letting them bite from the same sandwich. Third, both nations have very close family ties, whether it is immediate
or an extended one. Adults still live with parents and some are even already married yet living in the same roof with
parents. Old parents are taken care of by their children and not sent to nursing homes. Daughter-in-law moves to
the house of their husband. Aunts, uncles, and cousins are considered important part of the family. Another notable
value we share is respect to elders (except for the really westernized families). We Filipinos do this gesture of mano
by getting the right hand of the elders and putting it on our forehead while the Koreans bow in front of their elders.
The older the person is in front of them or with a higher position, the lower they have to bow. As you can see, there’s
a lot of things or reason why Hallyu became a reflection of our culture.
3. What do you think is the reason why Filipinos love Hallyu and idolize K-Pop stars?

I think, given from the fact that Hallyu brought a South Korean culture to everyone who has access to television,
movie houses, and internet. The reason that we idolize and love them is because we all think it’s kind of neat, super
trendy and cool though not just us, Filipinos, sees that in the same way. Especially with the way they dress, they put
a make up on, the standard that they have when it comes to beauty and body shapes, cosmetics and bunch of stuffs.
And the most important thing to answer this question, is it because, we Filipinos are the one that shows great
support and appreciation with these kinds of things.

4. How do you think Hallyu affected businesses in the Philippines, and do you think the marketability and industry
for Hallyu are becoming a bandwagon? Explain your answer.

I think it’s just a fair game, there’s a positive side and downside when it comes to businesses. As a student that is
inclined and have a course that is more related to these kinds of situation. I believe that if we gain benefit from it
there’s a lot of aspects that I can say that we are also affected by it. And yes, there’s a part of me that I think the
market and industry for Hallyu are becoming a bandwagon. Why? Since most people these days are much gullible
in the outer side even though they kept on denying it. They see someone like this and that and since they think that
everyone else is doing it, they should as well. We keep on keeping up the to the trend, however, the underlying
circumstances or the consequences of keep on doing it since we are now blind with greediness, crab mentality and
obsession with new things. That is why, we tend to forget that we are now getting more attached into other culture
than instead of our own.
