Angles
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Applies

Properties of Parallel lines cut by transversal in finding the missing angles!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in this self-learning module.
For the Learner:

LESSON

Parallel lines cut by a transversal have various applications to real life. In

fact, you can see these lines all over the world.

Now, look around you and cite example that illustrate parallel lines cut by a
transversal.

Example 1:

The Pasig City LGU made a wheel chair ramp for PWDs. If the Railings of a
wheelchair ramp is parallel in each other. Find the value of x that will make
m ∥ n.
Solution 1:
𝑚 ∠ A = (4x + 4)°
𝑚 ∠ B = 76 °
𝑚 ∠ C = (5x + 14)°
𝑚 ∠ D = 104°

𝑚∠ A = 𝑚∠ B Since ∠ 𝐴 and ∠ 𝐵 are Alternate Interior

angles,then they are congruent.
Solve for the value of x
(4x + 4)° = 76 ° Substitution
4x = 76 - 4 Addition Property of Equality (APE)
4x = 72 Combine like term
x = 18

Solution 2:
𝑚∠ C = 𝑚∠D Since ∠ 𝐶 and ∠ 𝐷 are Coresponding angles,
then they are congruent.
Solve for the value of x
(5x + 14)° = 104 ° Substitution
5x = 104 - 14 Addition Property of Equality (APE)
5x = 90 Combine like term
x = 18

Example 2:
The figure below shows roads in Pasig City. Francisco St, Caruncho Avenue
and Market Avenue are Parallel lines cut by transversal. Use the satellite photo and
the given information to determine the values of x and each angles.
Solution:
𝑚 ∠ 1 = ( 5x – 10 )°
𝑚 ∠ 2 = ( 8x – 5 )°
𝑚 ∠ 1 + 𝑚 ∠ 2 = 180° Since ∠ 1 and ∠ 2 are Exterior angles in the
same side, then they are supplementary.
Solve for the value of x
(5x – 10)° + (8x – 5)° =180° Substitution
5x + 8x = 180 + 15 Subtraction Property of Equality (SPE)
13x = 195 Combine like term
x = 15

𝑚 ∠ 1 = ( 5x – 10 )° 𝑚 ∠ 2 = ( 8x – 5 )°
= 5(15) – 10 = 8(15) - 5
= 75 – 10 = 120 - 5
𝑚 ∠ 1 = 65° 𝑚 ∠ 2 = 115°

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE!

Using the image of fire escape of Sagad High School at the right, name all
angle pairs as indicated;

1. Alternate Interior angles 1 2

2. Alternate Exterior angles
3. Corresponding angles 3 4
4. Same Side Interior angles
5. Same Side Exterior angles
5 6

7 8
ACTIVITY 2: KEEP PRACTICING!
In the figure below, determine the value of x and measure of each angle.

(6x + 18)°
(9x + 12)°

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF!

Direction: Find the value of x and y that will make e ∥ f , and f ∥ g. Determine the
measure of three angles. If m∠2 = 2x + 30, m∠ 3 = x + 50 and m∠ 4= 3y + 11.
