Let Us Learn

This module will help you realize that our thoughts are affecting
the way we feel. Our feelings and emotions have a humongous impact
on our outlook. What we feel drives us to do certain things that
ultimately leads to specific results. Our thoughts lead to our feelings,
which lead to our actions, which lead to results. Our thoughts then
become beliefs. Beliefs then become automatic thoughts that drive
behaviors.

After studying this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Evaluate his/her own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (EsP-
PD11/12DWP-Ib-2.2).
2. Establish connections between thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors in actual life situations (EsP-PD11/12DWP-Ib-2.3).

CONTENT STANDARD

The learners demonstrate an understanding of the various aspects

of holistic development: physiological, cognitive, psychological,
spiritual, and social development.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD

The learners shall be able to illustrate the connections between

thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a person’s holistic development.

Let Us Try

Activity: My Diary

Assessing Your Own Aspects. Note down your impressions, thoughts,

feelings and how you experience each of these four levels (physical, mental,
emotional, spiritual) in your life currently. Note down any ideas you have
about steps you can take towards greater development and balance. It is also
worth noting down any areas of resistance that comes up on each level. Take
a few minutes to think and write about which of the four aspects you have
developed quite well and which one(s) might need a little more attention and
expression in your life. Write this in your journal

Physical: Are you physically healthy and active? Do you like and feel
comfortable in your body? Do you enjoy your sexuality? Are you comfortable
in the material world? Are you practical, down to earth, independent?

Mental: Are you satisfied with your intellect? Can you think and express
yourself clearly? Do you have a belief system that supports you and works for
you? Are you open to new ideas without being overly impressionable?

Emotional: Are you in touch with your feelings and able to express them
appropriately? Do you allow yourself to feel the full range of emotions - fear,
sadness, anger, as well as love and joy - or do you find that certain emotions
make you uncomfortable? Are you able to set appropriate boundaries with
people? Can you relate to others in a close, intimate way?

Spiritual: Do you feel a sense of connection to your spiritual source? Are you
able to spend time quiet and alone, just "being"? Do you have a relationship
with your own inner wisdom or intuitive guidance? Do you have moments
when you feel at one with everything or part of something greater?

Your output will be rated using the rubric below.

Reading: The Four Aspects of "Self"

Human life consists of four aspects: the physical, mental, emotional,
and spiritual levels of existence. In order to find balance, wholeness, and
fulfillment in our lives, we need to heal, develop, and integrate all four of
these aspects within ourselves.

Our physical aspect, is of course, our physical body. It also includes

our ability to survive and thrive in the material world. Developing the
physical level of our being involves learning to take good care of our bodies,
and to enjoy them. It also means developing the skills to live comfortably
and effectively in the world.

Our mental aspect is our intellect, our ability to think and

reason. The mental level of our existence consists of our thoughts,
attitudes, beliefs and values. Our minds can be our greatest gifts, and at
times, our greatest curse. Our minds can cause us to have terrible
confusion or bring us profound understanding. Developing the mental level
of our being allows us to think clearly, remain open minded, yet discern
intelligently. Our minds enable us to gather knowledge and wisdom from
our life experience and from the world around us.

Our emotional aspect is our ability to experience life deeply, to relate

to one another and the world on a feeling level. It's the part of us that seeks
meaningful contact and connection with others. Developing the emotional
level of our being allows us to feel the full range of the human experience

3
(with the five senses), and find fulfillment in our relationships with ourselves
and each other.

Our spiritual aspect is our inner essence, our soul, the part of us
that exists beyond time and space. It connects us with the universal source
and the oneness of all life. Developing our awareness of the spiritual level
of our being allows us to experience a feeling of "belonging" in the universe,
a deeper meaning and purpose in our lives, and a broader perspective than
we have from our personality alone. The spiritual level provides a
foundation for the development of the other levels.

All four of these aspects are equally important. If we want to feel whole
and lead healthy, satisfying lives, we need to focus a certain amount of time
and attention on understanding, developing, healing, and integrating each
aspect.

Reading: Self-Awareness

Self-awareness can be seen as the knowledge, understanding, and

assessment of one's own strengths, weaknesses, and personality in a way
that can help a person pinpoint how such things impact one's own
behavior, as well as the behavior of others.

It is about learning to better understand why you feel what you feel and
why you behave in a particular way. Once you begin to understand this
concept you then have the opportunity and freedom to change things about
yourself enabling you to create a life that you want. It is almost impossible
to change and become self-accepting if you are unsure as to who you are.
Having clarity about who you are and what you want can be empowering,
giving you the confidence to make changes.

Reading: How to Become More Self-Aware Throughout Your Life

1. Look at yourself objectively.

Trying to see yourself as you really are can be a very difficult process, but
if you make the right efforts, getting to know your real self can be extremely
rewarding. When you are able to see yourself objectively, you can learn how
to accept yourself and find ways to improve yourself in the future.

So, what is an easy way to get started with this?

• Try to identify your current understanding by writing out your

perceptions. These may be things that you think you are good at
doing, or that you need to improve. The key here is to understand

4
what makes you tick, but NOT worry about comparing yourself to
others.
• Think about the things you are proud of, or any accomplishment
that really stand out throughout your life.
• Think about your childhood and what made you happy back then.
What has changed and what has remained the same? What are the
reasons for the changes?
• Encourage others to be honest with you about how they feel about
you, and take what they say to heart.

In the end, you will come out with a fresh new perspective on yourself and
your life.

2. Keep a journal.

You can write about anything in your journal, even if it is not related to
your goals. Recording your thoughts on paper helps to relieve your mind
of those ideas and clears it up to make space for new information and
ideas.

Take some time each night to write in your journal about your thoughts
and feelings, and your successes and failures for the day. This will help
you grow and move forward in your achievements.

As you self-reflect, take some time to think about how you are a leader,
and how people working under you likely view you. Think about what you
do to help other people, and if you could possibly do more. What are your
values, and what is most important to you right now?

3. Write down your goals, plans, and priorities.

Plan out your goals so they turn from ideas into a step-by-step process.
Break down your larger goal into mini goals so it seems less overwhelming,
and tackle it head on.

4. Perform daily self-reflection.

To have self-awareness, you must do self-reflection. This requires setting
aside some time, hopefully every day, to honestly look at yourself as a
person and a leader. Committing to this practice can help you improve.

5. Practice meditation and other mindfulness habits.

Meditation is the practice of improving your mindful awareness. Most types

of meditation focus on the breath, but not all meditation and mindfulness
have to be formal. You can also find greater clarity from regular moments
of reflection.
During your meditations, you may stop to think about some specific
questions.

5
• What is your goal?
• What are you doing that is working?
• What are you doing that is acting as a hindrance to your success?
• How can you change your process to improve it?

6. Ask trusted friends to describe you.

How are we supposed to know what other people think of us? We have to
listen to the feedback of our peers and mentors and let them play the role
of an honest mirror. Tell your friends when you are looking for open,
honest, critical, and objective perspectives. Allow your friends to feel safe
while they are giving you an informal yet honest view.

Let Us Remember

We can manage our emotions well, align our behavior with our values,
and understand correctly how others perceive us, if we become mindful of
what we think.

Our thoughts, feelings and actions are greatly intertwined. Negative

thoughts are catastrophizing our wellbeing. Just like our thoughts can be
automatic, behaviors can be mindless as well. To negate the outcomes of these
behaviors, we need to examine our beliefs first. We may perceive and look at
things differently. We also need to assess our current state, emotions, and
environment. Instead of asking why, (why I am feeling so sad? Why did my
friends get angry at me?) ask what (What are the situations that makes me
feel sad?). There might be factors that are outside of our control and
recognizing these will guide us to fix the situation.

Ideally, over time, you’ll use various methods to slowly gain a deeper
understanding of who you are, what you want, and how those things overlap
or conflict with how you behave, think, and feel.

Sample answer for Let Us Practice: How Mindful Am I?

Let Us Practice More

Sample answer.

1. Has someone ever asked you a question that you really did not want
to answer? How did you respond?

Yes, I tried my best to deviate and change the topic so that I can avoid the
question.

2. Have you ever gotten (or given) a “compliment” that really was not a
compliment? How did you feel afterwards?

Yes, I have given a compliment and received one that was not really a
compliment. Afterwards, I felt guilty on what I have done. When I received one
that wasn’t a compliment, I felt a bit sad that what they said wasn’t really
what they intended.

13
3. Did you ever do something to be helpful that turned out badly? What
happened? What do you wish had happened?

Yes, I was trying to help my cousin with cooking a dish, but I accidentally
burned what we were frying. It resulted to buying new ingredients and cooking
again. During that moment, I wished that I were more mindful of what I was
doing and consulted for assistance from my cousin who had more experience
than me.

4. Have you ever caught someone cheating (either on a test or on a

boyfriend/girlfriend)? Did you say anything? Why or why not?

Yes. Back in elementary, I saw my classmate checking the answers of his

seatmate and eventually copying them. I directly went to the teacher and
reported what I saw which resulted to my classmate getting scolded by the
teacher. I felt sorry for my classmate, but I know that it was the right thing to
do.

5. Have you ever gotten in trouble because someone caught you cheating
(or thought you were cheating)? What happened? What do you wish had
happened?

No, I haven’t really gotten in trouble because of getting caught in cheating or

was mistaken by someone to be cheating.

6. In what other situations have you seen someone T.H.I.N.K. (or not)
before speaking? What happened?

One good example of a situation that I have seen wherein a person used
T.H.I.N.K. before speaking was when my classmate carefully chose his words
to correct the wrong writings on the board by our teacher. She respectfully
addressed that what our teacher has written was wrong and it resulted to a
quick correction.
