iv Scientific Atlanta Application Code Downloader User’s Guide 4007730 Rev C
Introduction
The Scientific Atlanta Code Downloader Program is used to download application code files to receivers/decoders
including the PowerVu® Model D9828 Multiple Decryption Receiver (MDR), PowerVu Model D9834 Satellite
Receiver, PowerVu Model D9850 and D9852 Program Receivers, Model D9854 Advanced Program Receiver,
PowerVu Model D9858 Advanced Receiver Transcoder, and Continuum DVP™ Model D9010 Decoder for the
purpose of maintenance upgrades or features updates. The Code Downloader Program can be run on any PC
equipped with a Microsoft® Windows Operating System (e.g., Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP).
Note: The receiver must be rebooted for a changed IP address to take effect.
PC IP Address Setup
The PC is configured to be on the same subnet as the receiver using the Network Connections option in the PC
Control Panel.
3. Then choose “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”, and click the Properties button.
The following window should appear.
4. Set the IP address to the same subnet as the receiver. In the above example, the IP address is set to
192.131.244.200.
6. Enter a Default Gateway of “192.131.244.254” (this setting is only required when connecting to
receivers via a remote network; otherwise leave it blank). Click on the OK button when done.
7. Click on the Close button to close the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” window as shown
below. The PC may need to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.
When connecting a single PC to a receiver via a 10BaseT or 100BaseT (twisted pair) Ethernet cable, a “twisted-
pair” configuration must be used. The Ethernet connector contains eight conductors. Only four pins are used in the
twisted-pair cable. The pin-out is as follows:
Top View
1 --- 3
2 --- 6 Pin 1 Pin 8
3 --- 1
6 --- 2 Cable
The other four wires may be wired straight through (i.e. 4 - 4, 5 - 5, 7 - 7 and 8 - 8). Note that the wires are
numbered 1 through 8 from left to right with the locking tab located at the bottom (viewing pins from top).
If the PC is to be connected via a network (and routed via a hub) to one or more PowerVu receivers or a Continuum
Model D9010 Decoder, a “straight thru” cable is required (pin-for-pin). No special pin-out is required.
1. Click on Start/Run.
2. At the command prompt, enter “cmd” as the instruction, as shown below on a Windows XP OS, or
“command” on Windows 98.
To communicate with the receiver/decoder, type the “ping” command followed by the
receiver/decoder IP address, e.g., ping 192.131.244.6. If the connection is successful, four
response messages from the receiver should appear in the command window similar to shown
below.
2. View the License Agreement and if you agree with the terms, select “I accept the agreement” to
proceed with the installation.
4. Select the location to store the program files using the Browse button.
6. Check the Create a desktop icon box if you want the program icon(s) to appear on your desktop.
8. When the installation is complete (it only takes a few seconds), you will see another window
indicating the Scientific Atlanta Code Downloader Wizard is finished.
This will delete the program from your PC. An example of selecting the “Uninstall” operation on your PC in the
normally installed location is shown below.
If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your PC, the PDF file will open when you select the User’s Guide
as shown in the example below.
Once the TFTP Server Program is loaded onto your PC, click the TFTP Server Program icon on your desktop to
start the application. When starting the application, the program dialog window will appear similar to that shown
below. Only one running instance of the Scientific Atlanta TFTP Server Program is allowed.
Note: the following procedure assumes the application code files (i.e. files with “CDT” extensions) to be
downloaded to the receivers reside in a folder (e.g., TFTP folder) on the PC or network.
The TFTP Server Program is fully compliant with TFTP protocol specifications. In addition, the program supports
simultaneous file transfers (read and/or write) from multiple TFTP clients. The Program uses predefined TFTP port
69 when it’s listening for the client’s request. A client is not supposed to use the TFTP port for the data transfer. It
should use a random port number for this purpose. In the case, when the random number is 69, the program will
support a TFTP transfer, but it will reject all other TFTP requests during the transfer process. This is the difference
between this program and a third-party TFTP Server.
Upon startup, if the Program finds that TFTP port 69 is in use (most likely by another TFTP Server), it will display
an error message.
Once a TFTP session is completed, the transfer result is moved to and stored in the History LOG. An example of a
two completed TFTP file transfers are shown in the History LOG.
Warnings Window
The Warnings window displays a maximum of 16 messages. They are added to the list in order of occurrence. An
example of a Warning message is shown below.
The “Warnings” window can be cleaned at any time using the Clear Warnings button.
Note: the following procedure assumes the TFTP Server Program is running and the application code files (i.e. files
with “CDT” extensions) to be downloaded to the receivers reside in a folder (e.g., TFTP folder) on the PC or
network. These two criteria must exist before you can proceed with the download trigger operation.
1. Using the browse button, select the CDT file from the folder on your PC or network that you
want to download to the receiver(s).
File Name. File selection is available using the browse button. The default file extension
is “CDT”, but you can display all files in the selected folder. When the file is selected, it will be
analyzed for its internal format, and will be allowed only if the file is:
2. Enter the IP addresses of the decoders in the Destination IP List edit box, followed by clicking the
Add button after each entry. This operation adds the IP address directly to the Destination IP List.
If each IP address is simply an increment of one greater than the previous address, use the Add Next
button to quickly add IP addresses to the Destination IP List. See the details in the following table
on the use of the Add and Add Next buttons.
Destination IP List. This list contains IP addresses for decoders to be downloaded with the
selected CDT file. The following controls (buttons) are available while building a Destination IP
List:
Add Adds the IP address from the edit box to the list. The appropriate warning
window will appear if the IP address is invalid or already exists in the list.
Add Next Increments the last triplet of the IP Address in the edit box and adds it to the list.
The appropriate warning window will appear if the last triplet of the IP address in
the edit box is 255 or the IP address already exists in the list.
Delete Deletes the selected IP address from the Destination IP List.
Delete All Deletes all entries in the Destination IP List.
3. Select the decoder IP addresses in the Destination IP List to be used for the TFTP request.
4. Enter either public or a private string in the Community String field. The community string must
match the ‘write community string’ in the receiver. The decoder default for this field is public.
5. TFTP Server IP List. The program will display a list of IP addresses of all the Network Interface
(NI) cards found for the PC. Select an IP address to be used by all decoders from the “Destination IP
List” for the TFTP request. Check the PC’s IP configuration (run “ipconfig” in the command shell)
or Ethernet cable(s) connection if this list is empty or does not have an expected IP address.
6. Send the DL requests. The user can activate the Send DL Request button at any time after the
required configuration is completed. If any information is missing when the Send DL Request
button is activated, a warning message will be displayed in a pop-up window.
OK The DL Request has been The reply indicates no error has been detected.
received and validated.
Reply Error The DL Request has been The DL Request has been sent while the

The receiver does not recognize the DL
Request message. For example, this will occur
when attempting to download a D9828 MDR
with a CDT file for a D9834 or D9850 receiver.
No Reply The reply has not been A receiver with the specific IP address is not
received after three retries connected to the network.
The receiver does not support DL trigger.
This receiver or decoder is not from Scientific
Atlanta.
An example is shown below of working (OK) and non-working (No reply) connections.
The TFTP request that is sent by every decoder from the Destination IP List will use the selected
File Name and TFTP Server IP List address.
a. A third-party or Scientific Atlanta TFTP Server (PowerVu Model D9828 MDR, PowerVu
Model D9834 Satellite Receiver, PowerVu Model D9850 and D9852 Program Receivers,
Model D9804 Multiple Transport Receiver, Model D9854 Advanced Program Receiver,
PowerVu Model D9858 Advanced Receiver Transcoder or Continuum DVP Model
D9010 Decoder with application software R1.53 or higher).
b. SA TFTP Server only (PowerVu Model D9834 Satellite Receiver, PowerVu Model
D9850 and D9852 Program Receiver, Model D9804 Mulitple Transport Receiver, Model
D9854 Advanced Program Receiver, PowerVu Model D9858 Advanced Receiver
Transcoder or Continuum DVP Model D9010 Decoder with application software R1.52
or lower). The Destination IP List should contain only one IP address at a time.
Note: It will take up to 1 minute after the download has completed before the reboot procedure begins.
Once the receiver or decoder has completed the reboot procedure, the application code version can be verified by
displaying the Current Application version on the front panel display menu or TV screen, depending on the display
interface used by the receiver or decoder.
To verify the version of the downloaded application code, go to the About menu to display the App Current
version. It should be noted that “DL” will be displayed in the top right corner of the front panel display while the
application download is being performed, and will remain until the receiver begins the reboot process.
