Introduction
The Scientific Atlanta Code Downloader Program is used to download application code files to receivers/decoders
including the PowerVu® Model D9828 Multiple Decryption Receiver (MDR), PowerVu Model D9834 Satellite
Receiver, PowerVu Model D9850 and D9852 Program Receivers, Model D9854 Advanced Program Receiver,
PowerVu Model D9858 Advanced Receiver Transcoder, and Continuum DVP™ Model D9010 Decoder for the
purpose of maintenance upgrades or features updates. The Code Downloader Program can be run on any PC
equipped with a Microsoft® Windows Operating System (e.g., Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP).

Receiver IP Address Setup

Each PowerVu receiver or Continuum DVP Decoder is equipped with a default Class C IP address. The receiver
and the PC are typically on the same subnet. For instructions on changing the receiver IP address, refer to the
Installation and Operation Guide or User’s Guide provided with the receiver. Depending on the user interface
available, this can be done by accessing the decoder menus on the front panel, on-screen display, or via a Web
browser interface.

Note: The receiver must be rebooted for a changed IP address to take effect.

PC IP Address Setup
The PC is configured to be on the same subnet as the receiver using the Network Connections option in the PC
Control Panel.

To configure the PC IP address:

1. Select Start / Control Panel / Network Connections / Local Area Connection.

2. In the Local Area Connection Status window, choose the Properties button. You will see a
window similar to that shown below.

4007730 Rev C Scientific Atlanta Application Code Downloader User’s Guide 1

Note: These screens are representative of a PC with a Windows XP operating system. You may see slight
differences in these screens depending on the Operating System used.

3. Then choose “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”, and click the Properties button.
The following window should appear.

4. Set the IP address to the same subnet as the receiver. In the above example, the IP address is set to
192.131.244.200.

5. Enter a default Subnet Mask of “255.255.255.0”.

6. Enter a Default Gateway of “192.131.244.254” (this setting is only required when connecting to
receivers via a remote network; otherwise leave it blank). Click on the OK button when done.

7. Click on the Close button to close the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” window as shown
below. The PC may need to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.

Testing the PC-to-Receiver Connection
Once the PC has been configured, attach the “crossover” Ethernet cable between the PC and the receiver. Note that
the Ethernet cable has a special wiring configuration which allows the two devices to communicate directly without
the use of hubs or switches. If a crossover cable is not available, two regular Ethernet cables and an Ethernet hub
may be used instead.

When connecting a single PC to a receiver via a 10BaseT or 100BaseT (twisted pair) Ethernet cable, a “twisted-
pair” configuration must be used. The Ethernet connector contains eight conductors. Only four pins are used in the
twisted-pair cable. The pin-out is as follows:

Top View
1 --- 3
2 --- 6 Pin 1 Pin 8

3 --- 1
6 --- 2 Cable

The other four wires may be wired straight through (i.e. 4 - 4, 5 - 5, 7 - 7 and 8 - 8). Note that the wires are
numbered 1 through 8 from left to right with the locking tab located at the bottom (viewing pins from top).

If the PC is to be connected via a network (and routed via a hub) to one or more PowerVu receivers or a Continuum
Model D9010 Decoder, a “straight thru” cable is required (pin-for-pin). No special pin-out is required.

Running a DOS Command Session
To test the PC-to-receiver connection, begin a DOS command session. The DOS command prompt may be started
differently depending on your Operating System.

To start the DOS command session:

1. Click on Start/Run.
2. At the command prompt, enter “cmd” as the instruction, as shown below on a Windows XP OS, or
“command” on Windows 98.

3. A DOS command prompt window should then appear as shown below.

To communicate with the receiver/decoder, type the “ping” command followed by the
receiver/decoder IP address, e.g., ping 192.131.244.6. If the connection is successful, four
response messages from the receiver should appear in the command window similar to shown
below.

Starting the TFTP Server Program
The TFTP Server Program is required to send/transfer the requested CDT files to PowerVu receivers or Continuum
Decoders you want to download updated application code.

Once the TFTP Server Program is loaded onto your PC, click the TFTP Server Program icon on your desktop to
start the application. When starting the application, the program dialog window will appear similar to that shown
below. Only one running instance of the Scientific Atlanta TFTP Server Program is allowed.

Note: the following procedure assumes the application code files (i.e. files with “CDT” extensions) to be
downloaded to the receivers reside in a folder (e.g., TFTP folder) on the PC or network.

The TFTP Server Program is fully compliant with TFTP protocol specifications. In addition, the program supports
simultaneous file transfers (read and/or write) from multiple TFTP clients. The Program uses predefined TFTP port
69 when it’s listening for the client’s request. A client is not supposed to use the TFTP port for the data transfer. It
should use a random port number for this purpose. In the case, when the random number is 69, the program will
support a TFTP transfer, but it will reject all other TFTP requests during the transfer process. This is the difference
between this program and a third-party TFTP Server.

Upon startup, if the Program finds that TFTP port 69 is in use (most likely by another TFTP Server), it will display
an error message.

Active and History Log Windows
The Active LOG window displays the status of the transactions currently being performed during a TFTP transfer
session. Both the Active LOG and History LOG lists are sorted by the IP address. An example of a file transfer
in process is shown in the Active LOG shown below.

Once a TFTP session is completed, the transfer result is moved to and stored in the History LOG. An example of a
two completed TFTP file transfers are shown in the History LOG.

10 Scientific Atlanta Application Code Downloader User’s Guide 4007730 Rev C

The History LOG window can be cleaned at any time using the Clear History LOG button.

Warnings Window
The Warnings window displays a maximum of 16 messages. They are added to the list in order of occurrence. An
example of a Warning message is shown below.

The “Warnings” window can be cleaned at any time using the Clear Warnings button.

4007730 Rev C Scientific Atlanta Application Code Downloader User’s Guide 11

Resume and Suspend Functions
The TFTP Server Program starts in the active state with stored (or default) parameters. The parameters are stored in
the program’s INI file. To change any parameter(s), click the Suspend button. This will stop all ongoing TFTP
transfer sessions and no new TFTP requests will be accepted. To reconfigure and restart the Program, click the
Resume button.

Understanding the TFTP Server Program Controls

Working Directory. A user can limit access to the specific folder only. The program will check a TFTP request
and reject it if the required file is not located in the selected folder. If a TFTP request contains only a file name (i.e.
no path), the program will attempt to locate the file in the selected folder. The option is provided to remove this
restriction (by checking the Enable All select box). In this case a full path name found in the TFTP request will be
used to locate the file. If only the file name (i.e. no path) is provided, the PC’s current directory will be used.
File Access. A user can select one of the following options:

a. Read. Only the file read operation is allowed.

b. Write. Only the file write operation is allowed. If the Overwrite existing files select
box is checked, overwrite is allowed. Otherwise, the TFTP write request will be rejected
if the specified file exists.
c. Any. Both file read and write operations are allowed. If the Overwrite existing files
select box is checked, overwrite is allowed. Otherwise, the TFTP write request will be
rejected if the specified file exists.
d. Firewall Support. If the Enable select box is not checked, the program will use
random UDP port numbers for the data transfer. When this box is checked, a user can
specify the port address range allowed by the company’s IT department for incoming
UDP data. The program will attempt to use one of the ports from this range. If none of
the ports from the range above are available, the program will reject the request.

12 Scientific Atlanta Application Code Downloader User’s Guide 4007730 Rev C

Starting the DL Trigger Program
The DL Trigger Program forces the receiver or decoder to send the TFTP request for the CDT file to the TFTP
server. Once the Download Trigger Program is loaded onto your PC, click the DL Trigger Program icon on your
desktop to start the application. When starting the application, the program dialog window will appear similar to
that shown below. Only one running instance of the DL Trigger Program is allowed.

Note: the following procedure assumes the TFTP Server Program is running and the application code files (i.e. files
with “CDT” extensions) to be downloaded to the receivers reside in a folder (e.g., TFTP folder) on the PC or
network. These two criteria must exist before you can proceed with the download trigger operation.

Checking the Program Version

1. To find and display the current version of the installed Scientific Atlanta Code Downloader Program,
right-click on the icon in the top left corner of the “Scientific Atlanta DL Trigger” Program
window title bar or “TFTP Server” Program window title bar as shown in the example below.

2. Select About at the bottom of the drop-down menu.

Download Trigger Setup
To download a CDT file to single or multiple receivers or decoders, perform the following steps:

1. Using the browse button, select the CDT file from the folder on your PC or network that you
want to download to the receiver(s).
File Name. File selection is available using the browse button. The default file extension
is “CDT”, but you can display all files in the selected folder. When the file is selected, it will be
analyzed for its internal format, and will be allowed only if the file is:

a. A valid CDT file and,

b. The microprocessor type (embedded within the file header) indicates that the designated
product supports DL triggering.

2. Enter the IP addresses of the decoders in the Destination IP List edit box, followed by clicking the
Add button after each entry. This operation adds the IP address directly to the Destination IP List.
If each IP address is simply an increment of one greater than the previous address, use the Add Next
button to quickly add IP addresses to the Destination IP List. See the details in the following table
on the use of the Add and Add Next buttons.

Destination IP List. This list contains IP addresses for decoders to be downloaded with the
selected CDT file. The following controls (buttons) are available while building a Destination IP
List:

match the ‘write community string’ in the receiver. The decoder default for this field is public.

5. TFTP Server IP List. The program will display a list of IP addresses of all the Network Interface
(NI) cards found for the PC. Select an IP address to be used by all decoders from the “Destination IP
List” for the TFTP request. Check the PC’s IP configuration (run “ipconfig” in the command shell)
or Ethernet cable(s) connection if this list is empty or does not have an expected IP address.

6. Send the DL requests. The user can activate the Send DL Request button at any time after the
required configuration is completed. If any information is missing when the Send DL Request
button is activated, a warning message will be displayed in a pop-up window.

How to Verify an Application Code Download to a Receiver or Decoder was

Successful
If the CDT file is accepted by the receiver or decoder, the receiver or decoder will automatically reboot after the file
transfer has been completed. If the receiver does not re-boot, check the “Current Application” version. The
transferred CDT file may have been rejected due to an incorrect CDT file checksum or an attempt to download a
CDT file which is older than the factory preset minimum version.

Note: It will take up to 1 minute after the download has completed before the reboot procedure begins.

Once the receiver or decoder has completed the reboot procedure, the application code version can be verified by
displaying the Current Application version on the front panel display menu or TV screen, depending on the display
interface used by the receiver or decoder.
