11 - Peter Thompson Letter From November 7 PNP and Council
DATE: MEMO TO: FROM: SUBJECT: November 7, 2011 Policies and Priorities Committee Barry Elliott, CAO Paul Hascarl, Operations Manager Peter Thompson Letter dated September 27, 2011
PURPOSE / ISSUE To update Council on discussions that took place with Mr. Thompson on the afternoon of Wednesday July 27, 2011 and on the morning of Wednesday August 10, 2011. BACKGROUND I was contacted by Mr. Thompson on the afternoon of Wednesday July 27, 2011 and he enquired about the possibilities of placing a drive through coffee shop business at 240 Main Street. I discussed the possibility with Mayor White before proceeding to the Remax office to discuss with Mr. Thompson. We discussed the possibility of placing a drive through restaurant at the location between the Chinese food location and the video/pizza store. The conversation was quite informal and I pointed out some of the difficulties of mainly the drive through portion of the restaurant. Loss of parking, poor high volume traffic patterns, better locations adjacent to existing road networks, not conducive to a downtown shopping experience, introducing large amounts of traffic into pedestrian areas, and I commented on that the street was even being considered for closure at one time to all vehicle traffic. I told him I did not believe it matched the goals of the current OCP. The second time I was contacted by Mr. Thompson was the morning of Wednesday August 10, 2011. I once again had what I believed was an informal discussion at his office involving subdivision of existing property in Sanctuary Valley, Rymore subdivision servicing requirements, and the possibility of building strata units on the mobile home park in the Steeprock area. In continuing response to the letter Mr. Thompson sent, I did inform him that the strata lots in question in the mobile home park were both zoned for and identified in the OCP as mobile home housing only. I told him I would not be in favour of removing this housing type from the towns inventory of housing available to the public. In both cases I advised Mr. Thompson that I was not the last consideration on his proposals and that he could make official applications that Council could make rulings on. To date no applications have been received other than the letter of concern Mr. Thompson sent dated September 27, 2011.
