CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

(Brief introduction of the problem and background of the study)

Introduction

Anthelmintics are substances or medications used to treat infections caused by

parasitic worms in broiler chickens, which are raised for meat production. These worms,
known as helminths, can compromise the health and growth of broilers. Anthelmintics play a
crucial role in addressing these infections by alleviating symptoms and improving the well-
being of broilers. Their significance in broiler production includes enhancing health,
optimizing growth and performance, protecting against economic losses caused by reduced
efficiency and growth, and improving meat quality. Anthelmintics also reduce mortality rates
due to severe infections, contribute to flock uniformity, and minimize environmental
contamination from parasitic eggs. They advance sustainability by maintaining broiler health,
ensuring safe meat for consumers, and complying with regulations governing anthelmintic
use in animal production.

Ipil-ipil seeds originate from the Leucaena leucocephala tree, also known as "ipil-
ipil" or "leucaena." This leguminous tree, native to Central and South America, has gained
popularity worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions due to its wide range of applications
and benefits. The seeds of ipil-ipil are notable for their potential as anthelmintics, suggesting
they may have the capability to manage and control internal parasitic worm infections in
animals. These seeds contain bioactive compounds like tannins and saponins that have been
associated with effects on intestinal parasites. In some instances, ipil-ipil seeds are processed
into a powdered form and included in animal feed as a natural approach to combat worm
infestations, particularly in livestock like broiler chickens. This strategy is often viewed as an
alternative to synthetic anthelmintic drugs, although their efficacy and safety can vary based
on factors like dosage, preparation, and the specific types of targeted parasites. Caution and
guidance from veterinary professionals are crucial when using ipil-ipil seeds for their
anthelmintic properties, especially in commercial livestock settings. Ensuring accurate
dosing, administration, and adherence to withdrawal periods before consuming treated
animals' products are paramount to avoid potential adverse consequences.

This study aims to discover the effectiveness of the powdered ipil-ipil seeds as
anthelmintic in the broiler by mixing the powdered ipil-ipil seeds in the water and will be
administered to the chickens.

General Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to verify the performance of the broiler in the
powdered ipil-ipil seeds as anthelmintic.

Specific Objectives of the Study

1. Effectiveness of powdered ipil-ipil seeds as antelmintic.

2. To determine the weight of the broiler.
3. To determine the muscle growth by physical observation.
4. To determine the number of laid eggs of broiler.

Time and Place of the Study

This study will be conducted on October 2023 at Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija during the
school year 2023-2024.
