Big Phonics Book 5
Notes for Teachers
Helps to develop and consolidate the phonics skills which all pupils need to become proficient readers and
spellers.

Deals with the vowel phonemes oy, ow, short oo, ar, air, or, er, ear and their common spelling patterns, and short
ea. Also includes silent letters, common prefixes and suffixes, and some work on compound words and
syllabification.

Especially useful for those struggling with phonics: provides plenty of additional practice at each stage.

Provides invaluable support material which fits in well with popular approaches to phonics teaching and current
classroom practice.

Suitable for a very wide age range: successfully trialled with Years 2 to 9.
This page is licensed to be used by St Patricks P.S. only.

Straightforward layout and clear instructions enable pupils to work independently.

Contains a wide, balanced range of activities to give variety and to suit different learning styles.

Excellent for revision, assessment and homework.

Fits in well with the National Literacy Strategy’s Progression in Phonics, Steps 6 and 7.

Practical points:

1. There are even numbers of sheets in each section and in many cases the
book has facing pairs practising the same skill. This enables teachers who
wish to reduce sheets, for example for older pupils, to do so easily. Double
pages reduce by 70/71% to A4.

2. Many pupils are confused by a single phoneme having various spellings.

On the eighteen pages which introduce each vowel phoneme, e.g. pages 1and
3, there is a sentence and picture to help pupils associate the written and Option: one worksheet may be made by
reducing facing pairs.
spoken sound. The boxes could be cut out, possibly reduced, to provide a
handy memory aid for poor spellers. Pupils can compose their own sentences: See 'Printing Pairs of Pages'

word lists are provided at the back of the book. To work as a memory aid it is
often a case of ‘the sillier the better’.

3. There are dictation sentences towards the back of the book. Many teachers find dictation a useful tool in phonics
teaching. Most of the sentences at the bottom of e.g. page 1 (oy), and page 23 (ar) are also excellent for dictation.

4. The short sounds of the vowel digraphs ea, oo and ow are covered in this book, with some reference to their long
sounds. The latter are dealt with in more detail in Big Phonics book 4.

Big Phonics Book 5 is one of a series of books. Books 1, 2 , 3 and 4 deal with letter sounds, consonant-vowel-
consonant words, consonant clusters and long vowel phonemes respectively. All books are suitable for a wide age
range.

Puzzle it out 3 will cover much of the work dealt with in Big Phonics Book 5. The sheets have a ‘grown up’ feel:
useful for those who are falling behind with phonics. Due to be published in 2006.

One August Morning at Dawn

This page is licensed to be used by St Patricks P.S. only.

It was a morning in August. Paul and I were camping at Law’s farm

north of Taunton. Next to the camping field was a big apple orchard.

It was cheap to camp there. This was important for us: we couldn’t

afford a lot.

The weather had been awful for August: storms and more storms.

Our tent was torn in the storms and all the clothes we’d worn had got

wet. Mr Law had given us some straw because the ground was so

wet. But now we had more normal summer weather.

It was dawn. I’d woken up because Paul was snoring. I yawned as I

crawled out of the tent. Then I saw it. About forty metres from me

in the corner of the orchard was a hawk. He had caught something

Steering Clear
This page is licensed to be used by St Patricks P.S. only.

I love the dodgems: sheer fun! You steer your car and try to hit the
rear of the nearest car. All you can hear is ‘bump’, ‘bump’, ‘bump’,
and the odd cheer. Dad says you should steer so you don’t hit a
car........no fear!

I went on the dodgems in Meersby with my little brother Basheer last

week. He sat in a car but as he grabbed the steering wheel it was
clear he was too small: you could just see him peering over the wheel!
They said he was too small and he burst into tears. Oh, dear!

“Cheer up,” I said. “You’re nearly seven: perhaps in a year or two you
can steer.”

Answer the questions.

• Where were the dodgems?

• Why couldn’t Basheer steer?

• How do you know Basheer was upset?

• When might Basheer be able to steer the car?

• Do you like dodgems?
