Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Purpose of the Document

This document is designed to provide essential information and guidelines for American math tutors who are
providing educational support to Ukrainian refugee students. The primary focus is to understand the
differences between the Ukrainian and American educational systems, and based on this understanding, to
select and adjust the most appropriate educational content for the students.

It includes an analysis of how the American math curriculum differs from the Ukrainian curriculum, and how
tutors can identify the content Ukrainian students may already know and the content they have not yet learned.
Through this analysis, tutors can accurately assess the students' current level of knowledge, reinforce
necessary areas, and personalize the learning process to achieve optimal educational outcomes.

The document will explore the differences between the middle and high school math curricula in the United
States and Ukraine. It will provide a detailed mapping of American math grade-specific section content to
the corresponding grades and major units taught in Ukraine. This mapping will help both tutors and students
easily identify the content that Ukrainian students may already be familiar with and the content they have yet
to learn. By accurately determining the current level of math knowledge and reinforcing needed areas, this
guide aims to help achieve the best possible learning outcomes.

1.2 Target Audience

This document is primarily intended for tutors in the United States who teach math to Ukrainian refugee
students. It can also be referenced by Ukrainian refugee students who are interested in learning math
according to the American curriculum. Given the diverse backgrounds and needs of these students, there is
a necessity for tailored educational approaches, and this document is designed to assist tutors in
understanding and appropriately responding to the students' needs and educational levels.

Through this resource, tutors will be able to gain insights into the educational backgrounds and current levels
of Ukrainian students, and acquire essential information needed to understand the American math curriculum.
Furthermore, this document will aid tutors in developing more effective approaches and strategies to support
the learning processes of Ukrainian students.

This document focuses on enhancing the quality of education and supporting Ukrainian refugee students in
successfully learning in a new environment. It aims to help tutors use this resource to improve the educational
experiences of their students and to contribute to their educational achievements.

1.3 Reason for Choosing Mathematics as a Subject

Most refugee students arriving do not have an education level superior to that of local students in the United
States. Particularly, English and mathematics are the most fundamental subjects. Moreover, mathematics is
the subject that many students find most challenging, and it is often mentioned as the top priority for tutoring.
For these reasons, mathematics was chosen as the subject of focus.

1.4 Usage Guide (curriculum mapping table)

1.4.1 Ukraine curriculum custom notation explanation
 Explanation of the Notation
o First Index : represents the grade level. Ex> 5: 5th grade. 6: 6th grade.
o Second Index: represents the subject. Ex> m: math, a: algebra, g: geometry
o Third Index: represents the unit. Ex> 1: unit 1
o Etc.: “x” is not included in the secondary (middle, high school) mathematics curriculum

1.4.2 U. S curriculum custom notation explanation

 Explanation of the Notation
o First Index: represents the grade level Ex> 5: 5th grade, h: high school grade
o Second Index represents the subject. Ex> m:math, a1:algebra1, a2:algebra2, g:geometry,
pc: Precalculus
o Third Index: represents the unit. Ex> 1:unit1, 2:unit2

Chapter 5. Effective tutoring strategies

5.1 Customized Education Plans by Level

When Ukrainian students are taught according to the American curriculum, differences in the curriculum can
lead to situations where certain mathematical topics have not been previously covered or are already well
understood by the students. For example, a math unit taught in the sixth grade in the United States might be
covered in the eighth grade in Ukraine. Taking these differences into account, we first accurately assess the
student's current level and then develop a customized education plan tailored to the individual student's needs
and abilities. This plan helps ensure that students do not repeat content they have already learned and can
focus intensively on the areas they need.

5.2 Utilizing Diagnostic and Ongoing Assessments

The tutor conducts diagnostic assessments to determine the student's initial level and uses regular evaluations
to monitor their learning progress. These assessments are essential for identifying difficulties that the student
may face due to differences in the curriculum, and for planning appropriate support. Based on the results of
these assessments, the learning plan is adjusted accordingly.
