1. Keep Going
– Edgar Guest
"Keep Going" by Edgar Albert Guest, is undoubtedly an inspirational poem of
immeasurable value. All through its twenty four lines of rhymed use, the poem keeps advising
the reader never to quit. with the help of convincing images and commendable comparisons, the
poem encourages the reader to keep on the struggle till the goal is attained. It openly admits that
life may be a mixture of more pains and less pleasures. Yet one must continue with one's effort,
through with intervals of rest, till success gets one with smiles. The poem emphatically announces
that the faint see goals afar and the weak give up in the middle. It asserts that winners never quit.
It is no surprise that the world welcomes it as a classic inspirational poem. The irony is that the
E
goal is nearer than one fear it to be. The poet suggests to succeed and to try again if one fails.
Thus, the simple sounding poem speaks volumes about the need to keep going, despite difficulties
in scores.

extracted from his collection, Chicago poems. The poem is an expression of the narator's

to help him in this regard. But they express their inability. At last a group of young Hungarians,
beside a river and beneath the trees, show the narrator what Happiness is. They enjoy their food,
drink, music and fun. Wisdom lives in lives but not in libraries ! Though they don't have money,
intelligence or success. They live in the moment. They make the best of they have. They share
the time with people they care.
3. The Beggar
– Dr. Ammangi Venugopal
Dr. Ammangi Venugopal is the poet of the poem "The Beggar". He is a popular Telugu
poet. The original Telugu poem (Bichchagadu) is translated into English by Elanaaga (Dr. N.
Surendra). It portrays the pathetic plight of farmers. The struggles and sufferings of farmers are
highlighted.
The pitiable physical position of farmers forms an important part of it. Farmers, the
food providers to all, struggle to survive. They starve. Yet, they toil. Their feet bleed. Their
eyes are full of shadows of their sad stories. Their hunched backs tell us how hard they work.
Yet, their stomachs get no food. They are capable of feeding millions. And those millions do not
include in them those farmers. The modern society is responsible for this. Thus, the poem shows
the complexities of current times.
E – Ben Jonson

It seeks to explain what makes man noble.
U
The Narrator says that the oak stands tall and lives long. But it ends up as a dry, bald

log. Whereas, the lilly flowers in May, flourish for a day and shines for short while. Yet, it
pleases many. Beauty even in little measures fills the hearts with thrills. Quantity does not count
E
much. Quality lends nobility to life. The poem shows that a man small in size and with a short
life span can also be great and attractive like a lilly of a day in comparison to an oak tree which
lives for a longer period without use.
