THALAKKAL CHANTHU
The Kurichiyar are a tribe from the hilly areas of Wayanad and Kannur in Kerala.
Their name is derived from the phrase ‘kuri-vechavan’, meaning ‘he who took aim’.
In the late 18th century, when the kingdom of Mysore tried to expand into Kerala, the ruler of
Kottayam fled his kingdom. Pazhassi Raja, one of the heirs, stayed back to fight for his people.

Chakra Bisoi’s life thereafter was spent on the run from the British. The fire of rebellion
never died in his heart even though he was forced to change multiple locations.

The last anyone heard of Chakra Bisoi was when he crossed over to Patna State.
