D 2021 - 04 CORROSION-PROOF COATING (ON METALS)
C REV2

1. SCOPE
This standard specifies the coating to be applied to base metals (*1) of parts mainly for prevention of
corrosion (hereinafter referred to as "the coating").
Note (*1) Metals coated with chemical films and plating included.
Remarks) The coating specified in this standard shall be free of lead and hexavalent chromium.

2. TYPES
Coating shall be classified according to base metals and quality grades as defined in Table 1.
Table 1
Metal Quality Attached
Type of Coating (Symbol)
surface grade Table
Corrosion-Proof Coating, D 2021-Class 1, Grade 1 Grade 1
Corrosion-Proof Coating, D 2021-Class 1, Grade 2 Grade 2
Corrosion-Proof Coating, D 2021-Class 1, Grade 3 Iron Grade 3 1
Corrosion-Proof Coating, D 2021-Class 1, Grade 4 Grade 4
Corrosion-Proof Coating, D 2021-Class 1, Grade 5 Grade 5

3. QUALITY
The quality of the coating shall be tested in accordance with Section 4 Test Methods and shall
conform to specifications in Attached Table 1. Accordingly, for areas which are difficult to coat and,
consequently, where it is difficult to satisfy quality requirements (*2), corrective design change or
additional treatment shall be provided in order to satisfy the quality requirements.
Note (*2) Edges, deep indentations, elevations, joints, welded areas, inside portion of pockets.
Remarks: No specification has been made concerning appearance, but an indication can be made
separately as necessary.

4. TEST METHODS
Test methods of the coating shall conform to HES D 6501 (GENERAL TEST METHODS FOR
COATING), unless otherwise specified. In cases where applicable requirements are not included,
conform to agreement among the parties concerned. Coating tests shall be carried out on completed
parts which have been coated in accordance with the relevant coating specifications, on test pieces
taken from the completed parts, or on test pieces which are made with the same materials and by
coating specifications as the completed parts.

5. INSPECTIONS
The quality of the coating shall conform to the quality requirements given in Section 3. Sampling
methods, items, and locations to be tested in a lot inspection shall be agreed upon among the parties
concerned.

6. OTHERS
1) Paints and the coating processes for the coating of individual items shall be determined by
agreement among the parties concerned.
2) The quality of new processes and materials shall be approved by the quality control section of
Honda Motor Company (including R&D) before application.
3) Items not confirming to or not specified in this standard shall, if necessary, be determined by
specifications etc. upon agreement among the parties concerned.
